\ SAW."
Be it lmown that 1, Don A. 'lldrdirrnsbn, a citizen of tlieU.'S., residing at New York, county of New York," and State of New York, have invented certain new andquseful Improvements in Saws, of which the followa ing is a specification.
. This invention relates to portable ower saws, being intended more particular y for use in mines for cutting timbers and beams.
The invention has for an object to provide a portable power sew characterized y simplicity and cheapness of construction, compact arrangement'of parts, and facility of application to the beams or other work to be out.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference willhe had to the following description and accom anymg drawings, and to the appended c aims in which the various nove features of the invention are "more particularly set f0 Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of a portable power saw constructed according to my invention y I Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line as of. Fig. 2
Fig. 4- is a detail longitudinal axial section of one of the cylinders for moving the shdable saw frame.-
I have here shown my improved saw as mounted on a truck 1 supported by wheels 2 adapted to run on truck rails 3 such as are found in mines.
'A pair of timbers 4: are mounted on the truck and extend parallel to one another and transversely of the truck the upper faces of these timbers forming slideways, and being inclined as shown. ese timbers may be secured to the truck by U-bolts 6 which are located in grooves 7 in the timbers and extend through the truck floor at their ends, upon which nuts 8 are threaded.
Upon these timbers is mounted a sliding framewhich carries a circ r saw 9 and an air or other motor 10.
This frame comprises a pair of side members, or runners, 11 which rest onthe timhers and may be held against lateral displacement by extensions'12 formed on their lower faces which project down' into engagement with the sides of the timbers. These runners 11 are rigidly secured together by a connecting platform. 13 which extends beoperatively connected to claim is new and desire n, nes e -re Patented oee 12, 1920. m mes martin a, n19. skin In. severe.
tween the reslr'halvcs thereof'and s u ports the'motor 10, which may be secured t state by thebolts 1i or'other suitable means.
The'saw 9 is fixed to a shaft 15 journaled at its ends in brackets 16 secured to the forward end of the runners. 11 and may be the motor 10, which is shown as of the reci roosting type, b means of a gear pinion 1'. fixed to the she. 15 and meshi with a gear 18 ournaled m a bracket 1 fixed to the insi e of one of the runners 11 and having eccentrically connected thereto one end of a connecting rod 20 whose 0p osite and may he connects to the piston ro of the motor in the usual manner. The motor may be connected by a flexible pipe 21 to any suitable source of com ressed air.
T e frame carrying the saw may be moved along the slideways to advance the saw to thework b means of a bail 22 connectedto the forwar end of the frame and to which is attached a rope 23. As a guard forthe saw I may rovide a plurality of arched bars 28 whic as by the screws 29 to the outer faces of the slideways 4. These bars may be connected by one or more strips 20, forming a caie for the saw.
a pair of air cylinders are secured upon the upper faces of the timbers 4, as by bolts 61 passing through flanges 62 and extend along beside the members 11 on the cylinder heads 62. Each cylinder has a piston 63 therein whose piston rod 63 is secured to a. lug 64 fixed to the adjacent side member 11, a coiled spring 65 surrounding the piston rod within the piston. ompressed air may be fed to the cylinders by pipes 66 causing the piston to move in a direction to advance the saw to the work at the same time compressing the springs 65 which act to withdraw the saw when the air is released from the cylinder in any well known manner.
Having thus set forth the manner described by invention and of its use, what I to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable power saw comprising a wheeled truck having a pair of timbers extending transversely thereof, the upper faces of said timbers forming slideways. a frame comprising a pair of side runners slidable on said slideweys. a saw and a power mecha nism therefor mounted on said frame, and
are fastened at their ends a pair of piston and cylinder devices extending beside said runners and connected thereto and to the said timber for advancing the said saw.
2. A portable power saw comprising a wheeled truck having a pair of timbers extending transversely thereof, the upper feces of the said timbers being inclined longitudinally and formin slideweys, a. frame comprisin a. pair of side runners slidabl'e on said s 'de'ways, a saw and a ower mechan ism therefor mounted on sai drama, a. pair cylinders whereby t of cylinders secured to said timbers and extending along beside said runners, said cylinders having their piston-rods secured at their outer ends to sand runners, said cylinders being adapted to be connected at one end to a source 0 power fluid supply whereby the saw is advanced, and springs surrounding the said !piston rods 1n the said 9 saw is retracted. In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
