Application filed November 15, 1919. Serial No. 338,209.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN ALLEN GIB- ncNs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Martins Ferry,
county of Belmont, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Heading Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to canheading devices, and more particularly to a tool for attaching heads or covers upon cans, pails, drums and like receptacles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive hand tool whereby the lugs provided annularly on the covers of cans, pails, or drums may be conveniently closed or clenched over the upper end beads or rolls of the latter.
A further object is to provide a tool of the character mentioned by means of which the head or cover is held firmly seated upon the can during the lugturning operation and whereby the turning of the lugs into interlocking relation to the bead-0r roll of the can is effected without producing buckling of the metal.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, showing the lug-turning member de-.

Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views 1 and 2 indicate, respectively, the upper and lower jaws of a-pair of tongs constituted by crossed members 3 and 4 which are pivotally connected at the crossing-point, as
shown at 5, and which have their rear end portions shaped to form handles 6 and 7.
The lower jaw 2 has a broad body which is of bifurcated form to provide two similar widely-separated upwardly and forwardly curved or inclined claws 8. The upper jaw 1' has a width materially'less than of the bifurcation of the lower jaw and is provided on its under face with a transversely extending concave channel 9 having a curvature corresponding to that of the surface upon which said jaw is to rest when the tool isin use.
Pivotally mounted upon the upper jaw 1 is the front end portion of a lug-turning member which comprises a curved jaw 11 having a beveled lip 12 and a handle 13. The jaw 11 has a width approximating that of the bifurcation in the jaw 2 and'is designed to have its lip 12 lie within said bifurcation when the parts occupy the relative positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said jaw l1 has provided therein rearward of the lip portion 12 thereof a substantially rectangular hole or aperture 14 through which the jaw 1 projects. A transverse channel 15 having a curvature corresponding to that of the channel 9 of the jaw 1 is provided in the outer face of the aw 11, as shown.
A rectractile coil spring 16 has one end attached to a pin or stud 17 fixed upon a side of the jaw 11 adjacent to the lip 12 and its opposite end attached to'a pin or stud 18 fixed at a suitable point on the corresponding side of the jaw 1, said spring being designed to normally hold the lug-turning member in the retracted Fig. 3. v
The can or pail 19 to which the cover 20 is to be applied by means of the tool described has an annular roll or bead 21 formed at its upper edge, said roll or bead being ordinarily disposed in inclosing relation to a reinforcing wire 22. Said cover 20 is. preliminarily formed with its outer edge portion bent upward from the plane of its body and is then curved outward and downward, as shown in Fig. 3, to form a downwardly facing annular channel adapted to receive snugly therein the roll or bead 21 of thereceptacle. Provided on the said outer edge portion is a plurality of relatively spaced vertical tongues or lugs 23.
The cover 20 being seated upon the can or pail inthe position shown in Fig. 3, the tool constituting the present invention is applied for turning the depending lugs 23 into closely underlying, or clenched, relation to the head or roll 21 for firmly securing said cover in place, the upper jaw 1 of said tool being disposed in overlying seated relation to said head or roll with the latter received position shown in rbody of the receptacle 'with their points prising a pair of'tongs ofwhich one is designed to seat upon the top of the bead receiving portion of the cover, and the opclosely en aging the under side of said bead ror i'oll. As is apparent, theform, shape and relative-arrangement of parts of the structure herein described might be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
7 What is claimed is j 1. A tool of the character described, comprising a pair of'tongs, of'whichone jaw is bifurcated and the coact ing jaw has a width materially less than that of the bifurcation of the lfirst mentioned jaw, and a member pivotally mounted on the second mentioned jaw and having a jaw adapted to cooperate with said second mentioned jaw, said member being provided with an aperture located rearward of its jaw and having the second mentioned jaw projectedthrough said aperture.

5. A tool for turning or closing covers on the rim beads of cans, pails, or drums, comprising a pair of tongs of which the lower jaw has a relatively greater width than the upper jaw and is bifurcated, forming a pair 'of widely separated claw-like members, the
upper jaw having a transverse channel in its under face, and a lever pivotally mounted upon said upper jaw and having an outwardly facing jaw on its front end, the last mentioned jaw having a-width approximating that of the bifurcation in the lower jaw and operable into and out of said bifurca tion, said lever being adapted for actuation for forcibly thrusting its jaw forward with respect to an object grasped by the jaws of said tongs. r
