l- Fr UNITED STATES VICTOR C. NORQUIS'I, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
COMBINED METAL-BARREL COEEUGATING AND EDGING MACHINE.
Application filed February 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Vroron C. Nononrs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Metal-Barrel Corrugating and Edging Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined metal barrel eorrugating and edging machines, and has for its object to produce a ram actuated mechanism by which a metal barrel can be edged and corrugated in one operation of the ram. A further object is to produce means for corrugating a galvanized metal barrel to greater diameter than the edgings for the ends of the barrel, without injury to the galvanized surface or reducing the diameter of the barrel adjacent the corrugation.
Another object is to producemeans for rigidly securing a galvanized iron rolling hoop upon a metal barrel without affecting or fracturing or otherwise injuring the galvanized surface of such hoop or the galvanized surface of the barrel if the same is of galvanized material. A still further object is to secure a reinforcing rolling hoop rigidly upon a metal barrel by producing a pair of external corrugations on the barrel at opposite sides of and against the hoop, as distinguished from the method involving the heating and shrinking of hoops in place, as where such method is employed it ren ders impracticable the use of galvanized hoops.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1, is a plan view of a ram-actuated mechanism for edging and corrugating metal barrels in one operation of the ram or the like.
Fig. 2, is a central same.
Fig. 3, is a vertical section of a part of a barrel after the same has been edged at one end and provided with a corrugation.
Fig. 4, is slightly modified construction whereby a galvanized rolling hoop can be vertical section of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Serial No. 277,012.
tightly secured upon a barrel without the necessity of shrinking the hoop in position.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 is a suitable bed plate or support, surmounted by a ring 2 provided in its upper edge with a circular recess 3, and with a plurality of vertical openings 4 opening into said recess and registering with corresponding openings 5 in the bed plate, the latter also having another series of vertical openings 6, and a central'opening 7 through which slidably extends the stem'8 of a ram for reciprocation by any suitable power. Below the bed plate the stem is equipped with a header 9 equipped with a series of vertical rods 10 extending up through openings 4 and 5 and adapted when in normal position, to project up into the recess 8, as shown in Fig. 2; said rods being adapted at times to force a wedge ring upward from the bottom of the recess 3, for a purpose which herein-' after appears.
The header 9 is also equipped with a series of vertical rods 12 extending slidingly through openings 6 in the bed plate and carrying at their upper ends a combined circular wedge and retaining ring 13, the wedge face 14: of said ring being produced by forming a circular rabbit or groove at the lower end and inner side of said ring.
The stem 8 is equipped with a smaller combined wedge and retaining ring 15 in the same horizontal plane'as ring 13 and bearing a concentric relation to the latter, the wedge face 16 of ring 15 being formed by producing a rabbit or groove in the outer face of said ring in the same horizontal plane as the wedge face 14 of ring 13jthe said rings 13 and 15 being of such size that they shall be capable of sliding downward upon the outer and inner sides of ring 2 when the ram stem moves downwardly.
Arranged concentrically of the stem upon the supportin ring 2 are inner and outer sets of dies 1? and 18, the former having an outwardly projecting circular flange 19 and a circular recess 20 just above said flange, and the outer sets of dies a circular recess 21 to receive the flange 19 and an overlying inwardly projecting flange 22 to enter the recess 20, each die of the sets therefore constituting a male dieand a female die, the dies being so'proportioned that when spread apart or withdrawn from each other the outer edge of the flange .19 shall slightly overlap the inner edge of the bottom of the recess 21 of the companion die,
of flange 19 a distance slightly exceeding the thickness of the metal barrel to be edged and corrugated, as hereinafter more particularly referred to, the dies being also so proportioned that when forced together to perform the edging operation, there shall be an open joint between them susceptible of receiving the extreme upper edge 011 point of a spreader ring 23 fitting slidingly in the recess 3 of supporting ring 2 which spreader ring is adapted to be forced upward by the'underlying rods 10 when the ram stem moves upward, to effect the opening or separating movement of the dies 1? and 18, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the said spreader ring dropping by force of gravity or being-forced downward by the approaching movement of said dies when the ram stem moves downward.
The dies are so proportioned that the inner ones in moving outward will become slightly spaced apart and in moving inward will abut together sidewise, the reverse operation occuring with respect to the outer dies, that is in moving inward they approach each other and in moving outward become slightly more widely spaced apart, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1, it being understood that the approaching movement of the dies is accomplished by the pressure thereon of the cam surfaces 1d and 16, and that the reverse movement of the dies is effected as stated, by the said spreader ring, it being also noted by reference to Fig. 2 that the operative or closing movement of the dies begins in the initial part of the downward movement of the ram stem, and that the reverse movement of the dies is accomplished as the up ward movement of the ram stem is ending, and that in the interim between theinitial downward movement of the ram stem and the ending of the upward movement thereof, the parallel adjacent faces of the wedge rings 13 and 15, retaln the dies in their i closed or operative positions, that is with the flange or male members 19in engagement'with the recesses or channels 21, and r the flanges or male parts 22, in operative relation to the recesses or channel parts 20;
Mounted upon the inner dies 17 and snugly embracing the inner wedge ring 15 and retained in concentric relation by said parts, is a second supporting ring 24:, the same being widened at its upper end by the provision of an inwardly projecting flange 25, the ex ternal diameter of the supporting ring 24 standing in the vertical plane of the outer edges of the'fianges 19 of the in- .ner dies, when thelatter occupy their innermost or ino erative osition.
Secured upon the ram stem is a frustoconical wedge 26, which when said stem is at its highest point of adjustment, fits with lts lower end within a circular series of corrugating plates 27 rounded at their outer edges as at 28 to produce a corrugation of and then pressed downwardly in the latter a so that upon retracting it will retain its position in the grooves and exert inward pressure on the said plates and normally hold them with their rounded outer edges in approximately the same vertical plane as the periphery of the supporting ring 24.
Assuming that the operative parts of the mechanism are in the position shown most clearly by Fig. 2, it will be apparent that metal barrel 31 of proper size can be ranged in the position shown in said figure, and that when so arranged downward movement of the ram stem will through the action of the wedge rings 13 and 15 close the dies 17 and 18 and thus form on the lower end of the barrel a right angle shaped edgbig 32, the vertical portion of which is ofii 7 set inwardly sightly from the inner wall. of
the barrel, this edging being adapted in a manner well-known in the art and therefore not shown or described, to be seamed and sealed onto a barrel head, not shown, to secure the latter firmly in position with a liquid tight joint, the joint being made secure ordinarily by means of a chime also not shown as forming no part of this invention. 'As the edging of the barrel is accom,--
plished, the spreader ring 23 drops or is forced downward into the recess 3, this action occurring because the rods 5 move downward with the header 9 and the said wedge rings 13 and 15. As the edging operation is completed, the adjacent parallel faces of the wedge rings retain the dies in their operative position with the lower end of the barrel clamped between them, and by the time the edging operation is completed the wedge 26 begins to impart simultaneous outward movement to the corrugating plates 27 to cause the same to gradually bow outwardly the opposingportion of the body of the barrel until the downward movement of the ram is ended by which time said outward bowed portionof the body of the barrel constitutes a corrugation 33 of diameter appreciably larger than the maximum diram stem is reelevated to permit the spring 29, expanded by the downward movement of wedge 26, to retract and withdraw'the corrugating plates to normal position, and as the upward movement of the ram stem is ending, the spreader ring is reelevated by the bolts 10, to spread open or apart the said dies 17 and 18, and permit the barrel to be removed and then replaced in inverted position so that upon the next reciprocation of the ram stem, the other end of the barrel shall be edged and a second corrugation be formed in the barrel.
In Fig. l appears a corrugating plate 34 forming one of a series of corrugating plates arranged and operated in exactly the same manner as the corrugating plates 27, but each provided at its outer edge with two sma l rounded peripheral ribs 35 instead of having one rounded outer edge 28, which ribs 35 are spaced apart and parallel with each other. In this construction the plate is provided with a pair of inwardly converging grooves 36 instead of a single groove 30 as in Fig. 2, and two springs 37 corresponding to spring 29 are preferably employed for effecting inward movement of the segment plates 34, although it is obvious that a single spring could be employed to perform the function of the two springs shown.
When the ram is moved downward to effect outward movement of the plates 3a, a pair of corrugations 38 are formed on the barrel. This construction is adapted for securing upon the barrel what is known as a reinforcing rolling hoop 39, the same being supported in any suitable manner in proper position with respect to the ribs 35, so that when the latter produce the corrugations 38 on the barrel, they shall clamp against opposite edges of roller hoop and thus secure the same firmly in position. Heretofore, it has been customary to heat reinforcing rolling hoops and then shrink them upon the barrel, this method necessitating the use of hoogs of black iron or other material and thus inhibiting the use of galvanized iron. By my eons ruction as described the rollin hoop may be of galva-nized metal, and it is secured in posi tion with the necessary firmness and rigidity and without any tendency of checking or fracturing'the galvanized barrel or hoop.
Furthermore it can be so secured in position more quickly and at less cost than by methods hereintofore used, and in this connection it is desired to state that the formation of corrugations on galvanized metal barrels through the use of a series of radially adjustable corrugating plates, facilitates the work of corrugating and enables the corrugations to be of sufficient depth without injury to the galvanized surface of the barrel, to facilitate the upending of the barrels from a prone position upon the ground, it being well to state in this connection that one of the reasons for making the barrel of greater diameter at the points of'corrugation than at the ends, is to enable a man to upend a barrel more quickly and with less exertion than where the leverage of the full length of the barrel must be overcome in upending it.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have produced a combined barrel corrugating and edging machine which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention, and which is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the principle of construction involved or from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
