Specification of Letters Patent.

j dent of Amesbury, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have Ainvented an Improvement in Button-Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to turn-button fasteners, and inrparticular its aim is to render vsuch devices more desirable for use through a specific improvement in the form of eyelet or gromet ordinarily used as a part of the same.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the following description of the illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section ofa fastener embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank from which the eyelet is made; and i l Fig. 3 is a section of the eyelet after bending, the section being substantially along the line 3--3 of Fi 2.
Referring to 4ig. 1 I have there shown a fastener embodying a male or button member 5 having a head 7 which may be turned into alinement with a base portion 9 or set transversely thereto as illustrated, and a female member or eyelet 11 adapted to encircle the base art 9 and be held in position by the head 7 w en in the position shown in the ligure. The member 5 may be of any suitable construction and I have here shown it in the form disclosed by my Patent 1,201,682, dated October 17, 1916. I refer to this patent for a fuller description of the construction and operation of the part 5.
The eyelet 11 is adapted to be secured to a curtain 13 or similar device which it is desired to secure by the fastener. Said curtain may have a suitable buttonhole or opening therein to receive the fastener 5, the eyelet being secured about the hole to form a reinforcing border for the edge thereof in thev let to the curtain.
Vdisagreeable rattling of the metallic eyelet against the head 7 and adjacent parts of the base has resulted when the curtain 13 sways in the wind or the parts are otherwise moved. In accordance with the present invention I so construct the eyelet as to do away with this objectionable action.
The eyelet shown in this application has a body portion of substantially channel form as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and is stamped out from suitable sheet metal, the blank being illustrated in Fig. 2. As there shown, the blank consists of a substantially elliptical annulus which may have projecting prong portions 15 for securing the eye- The blank is split outwardly from the interior hole therein by slits 17 which are of such length as to divide the inner flange of the eyelet after it is bent into channel form, as shown in Fig. 3, but preferably do not extend into the face thereof. The slits 17 are in two pairs and are nearer the extremities of the major axis of the ellipse than the extremities of the minor axis. In other words, there are two short segments 19 at the extremities of the major axis and two long segments 21 at the extremities of the minor axis. The segments 19 are preferably made somewhat deeper than the segments 21, as clearly shown, for a purpose presently to be described. The segments 21 may have the enlargements 23 adapted to form bearings for the eyelet when it is secured in place.
The blank shown in Fig. 2 is` stamped out by suitable means to the form illustrated in Fig. 3, to form an annulus elliptic in plan and generally channel shape in cross section, having attaching prongs 15 depending from its exterior flange and having the interior flange divided into opposed pairs of segments 19 and 21. Such an eyelet may be attached to a curtain 13, as shown in Fig. 1, by passing the prongs 15 therethrough and clenching them. Preferably interior and exterior washers 25 and 27 are utilized, the ends of the prongs 15 bearing against the exterior washer 27. The parts 23 referred to form bearings for the washer 25 which fits inside the outer flange of the channel.
The portions 19, because of their division from the rest of the interior flange of the annulus, are free to give and return under position shown in Fig. 1.

Nhen the eyelet is free, portions 19 normally take the position shown-in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The parts are so Vproportioned that when the eyelet'is placed over the button 7 and forced into encircled relation.to the base 9, the parts 19 will bear against the walls of this base part and be displaced thereby, the segments 19 moving from the dotted line position to the full line The eyelet thus cannot move along the base portion 9, or
at least not with any freedom such as would result ina noisy hammering of the parts. Iwish to point out, however, that I do not depend upon the necessarily slight gripping action of thespring segments 19 for the strength of the fastening. The head member 7 is turned in traversing position to the elliptical eyelet and positively holds the parts of the fastener together. The Vcompleted fastening is of the turn-button'type and not of the snap-button type. At the same time the eyelet is so constructedfthat there is no lost motion between the parts such as might result in disagreeable noise.
