PATENT OFFICE. v
NED ALPERT AND DAVID GOLDIN, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE BOOKMARK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed December 13, 1919. Serial No. 344,657.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, NED ALPERT and DAVID GoLDIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettls and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bookmarks, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to book marks and has for one of its principal objects to provide a marker of a simple and inexpensive nature which includes a base strip having means for attaching the same to a page of a book and a pointer member shiftably and swingingly secured to said base strip pointing out or indicating a particular line or word on the page.
\Vith this and other objects in view which will be more readily apparent as the nature, purpose and operation are more clearly understood from the following description and claim, reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a view of a book with a book mark applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the book mark removed from the book.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 10 designates a base member which is preferably formed from a strip of relatively thin spring metal, the same being provided adjacent one of its ends with a headed stud 11 which engages with a slot 12 in the pointer member 18 whereby the latter is secured to the base member for sliding and swinging movements with respect thereto.
The means for attaching the base member to a page of a book includes an angular clip 14L which is provided with the trunnions 15 extending from opposite sides of the same, said trunnions being embraced by the slitted portions 16 of the lugs formed at the opposite sides of the base member 10, the said slitted portions being adapted to be bent around the lugs in such a manner as to normally cause the clip to engage one face of the base member. The angular portion 17 of the clip is normally spaced from the lower extremity 18 of the base and when it is desired to attach the base to the page of a book, the angular portion 17 is depressed and the clip 14L is thereby moved outwardly against the normal tendency of the slitted portions to hold the same in contact with the base.
In operation of the device when it is desired to mark a particular page in the book, the clip is operated to allow the page to be inserted therebetween and the pointer 13 is shifted with relation to the base in order that its indicating end may be adjusted to the exact line or word at which the writer desires to leave off.
lVhile there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred form of carrying the invention into practice, it is to be here understood that various changes and alterations which fall within the scope of the appended claim may be resorted to when desired.
What is claimed as new is A book mark of the class described including a base strip, a slotted pointer member secured thereto for sliding and swinging movement, and means for detachably securing said base to the page of a book, said means comprising lateral lugs on opposite sides of the base, said lugs being slitted for the major portion of their length and an angular clip having trunnions, the slitted portions of said lugs being bent around and embracing the lugs for normally causing one of the angular portions of said clip to actively engage with the base strip.
In testimony whereof we have aflixed our signatures.
NED ALPERT. DAVID GOLDIN.
