  • the invention relates to machines known as double touch adding machines or registers, provided with keys reading from l to 5, and wherein the larger digits are added by. making two key strokes; 9, for instance, being grommets, and a vekey.
  • One object of the invention is to produce a machine having a light and short key stroke and a smooth working key tension. Another object is to provide a simple and dependable construction for the purpose intended. Another object is to avoid the use of two mechanisms for rotating a numeral wheel; one mechanism toI register digital values and the other to register carry values, thussimplifying the structure and operation and also avoiding the necessity for any and all controlling, delaying or guiding means for preventing a loss of carry or other inaccuracy through interference of one mechanism with the other. Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
  • the carrying cam is peculiarly adapted to the requirements of the double touch key arrangement, as shown, having keys in value from l to 5. If the largest amount that may be added by any single key stroke is 5, whenever a carrying operation is initiated by a numeral wheel that wheel cannot pass beyond its four posiltion on that single stroke. 1 therefore rovide the cam with no lift from the 0 to t e 4 position, thereby admitting of the carrying roll falling to its lowest position with relation to the cam immediately, or at any time after the keyV stroke has been made. Upon subsequent rotation of the said numeral wheel from'the 4 position toward 9, the lift of the cam will advance the carrying roll, and may store energy for another carrying operation. Y

  • the stop arm is, however, not long enough to contact with said latch lu when the latch is operated by the carrying roller riding the cam, at times when the driving segment lever of the next higher column is not depressed by its keys, as in Fig. 5. The invention relates to machines known as double touch adding machines or registers, provided with keys reading from l to 5, and wherein the larger digits are added by. making two key strokes; 9, for instance, being reglstered by successive depressions of a four key and a vekey.
One object of the invention is to produce a machine having a light and short key stroke and a smooth working key tension.
It has been common in the key-operated multiple-order adding and calculating machine art to utilize a camrotated by a numeral wheel for the purpose of transferring a carry from a lower order to a higher order wheel. Usually a roll, mounted upon a spring-impelled transmitting member, bears against said cam and serves to transmit the motion to the next higher wheel. In order to always insure the said roll of dropping to the lowest point of the cam under highspeed operation, and also to accomplish an accurate transfer of the carry to a higher order wheel, in case it is at the time being .operated by its own actuator, it has been necessary to delay the rotation of the carrying cam, by interposing a spring between the numeral wheel'and the cam and by providing controlling or delaying means.
In the present'invention, the carrying cam is peculiarly adapted to the requirements of the double touch key arrangement, as shown, having keys in value from l to 5. Y
Such a construction would not be practical in a machine provided with numeral keys to register the higher carrying cam would require, in adding the largest amount, or 9, an idle face fromthe 0 to the position, leaving practically less than two points of lift on the cam, which would involve such a sudden and heavy load on the numeral wheel as to render it difficult to operate, owing to a consequent building up of operating tension in the several columns from left to right across the machine, thereby rendering the machine impractical.
Therefore, it will be seen that the Ldouble touch key arrangement, eliminating the higher' digital keys, is in essential combination with the carrying cam arranged as in my machine.
n the accompanying drawings, iliustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates depressible numeral keys in .denominational series and. having stems 3 and retracting springs 4.
Related to each denominational series of keys is a depressible lever 5, pivoted in real" at 6 and at its forward end provided with a segment rack 7, engaging 'a pinion 3l carried indirectly by a shaft 9, each lever having a retracting spring 10. Each key stem is provided with a shoulder 11, engaging the frame at 12 to limit its upward movement, and with a shoulder 13 engaging the related segment lever in the depression of the key and actuating said lever to rotate the pinion 8.
For each denominational series of keys, selective stop means are provided, to check the downward movement of each key of the series lat a point below normal position just suicient to provide for actuation of the segment lever and number wheel in accordance with the value of the key struck, this means consisting preferably as follows:
Two rock levers, 14 and 15, are pivoted intermediately of their lengths at 16 to the framing below each `segment lever, the latter being driven downwardly by the shoulders 13 of the key stems, and the rock levers having their forward and rear arms provided respectively with forward and rear upper stop faces a, b, c and d. i.
It is obvious that if either of the rock levers has its forward and rear stop faces digits, as 9, because the contacting simultaneously with a segment lever movingdownwardly, that the downward movement will be thereby stopped, and this is true of the 5 key and the related segment lever with respect to both of the rock levers, as shown in Fig. 11, neither of the rock levers in this case being engaged by the key stem. It is 'also obvious that if either rock lever has its forward or rear arm engaged by a key stem moving downwardly, and is thereby rocked, that contact of the face of the opposite arm of the same rock lever with the lower edge of the segment lever will stop the downward movement of the latter. Inthis way, the 4 key stem engages tne rear arm of the rear rock lever, and the stop a of the forward arm of the latter contacts with the lower edge of the segment lever, as shown in Fig. 12, to limit the downward movement. Similarly, the 3 key stem engages the forward arm of the rear rock lever, and the stop b of the rear arm of the latter contacts with the segment lever to stop it, as in Fig. 13; the 2 key stem engages the rear arm of the forward rock lever, and the stop c of the Jforward arm of the latter engages the segment lever to stop it, as Fig. 14, and the 1 key stemA engages the forward arm of the forward rock lever, and the stop d of the rear arm of the iatter engages the segment lever to stop it, as Fig. l5.
xnumeral wheels i? are loosely mounted upon the shaft 9, and means are provided to rotate any one of said wheels to the proper extent, upon depression of a key of the denominational series related thereto, said means consisting, as shown, of a sleeve or hub 18, fast to each numeral wheel and loosely mounted upon the shaft 9, and upon which in turn the pinion 8 is loosely mounted, a spring-pressed pawl 19 being pivoted to an extension 20 of the 'pinion and engaging the teeth of a ratchet wheel 21 carried by the sleeve 18, said sleeve at one end having fast thereto a wheel 22, having usually 20 teeth and termed an escape wheel.
Rotation of the pinion 8 will, through the pawl 19 and ratchet 21, rotate the sleeve 18 and the numeral wheel fast thereto, backward movement of the wheels being prevented by a spring-pressed pawl 23, engag` 4ing the ratchet 21 and pivoted at 24 to the depressed and released, 4 will appear as the numeral wheel reading. A 5 key in the same column being then depressed and released, the numeral wheel will be advanced farther to 9. Alfy additions to the same numeral wheel will involve the transfer of 1 to the next higher numeral wheel, the mechanism for which will now be described.
vEach numeral wheel, except the one of highest order is provided with a carrying cam 25, rigidly driven thereby through a pin 26 of the wheel engaging a slot 27 of the cam, admitting of some slight lay of the cam with respect to the wheel, or reasons hereinafter stated. There is normally sufficient space between the shoulder 13 of a key stem andthe upper edge of the related segment lever to admit of one extra -step or degree of upward movement of the segment lever, which extra movement vmay be termed the actuators carryin step. This extra upward movement o the segment lever takes place at the end of the ordinary upward movement of said lever whenever there is carrying to be performed, and both the ordinary upward movement of the lever for rotating the numeral wheel to register digital values, and the extraordinary upward movement to rotate the wheel to register a carry, are brought about'through the influence of the same retracting spring 10 of said lever.
In the carrying operation each cam relates to a numeral wheel of lower order, and the driving segment lever and the escape wheel relate to the numeral wheel of higher order.
Bridging or connecting each cam with each escape wheel is an escape lever 28, pivoted intermediately of its length at 29 to the related segment lever and engaging at its forward end 30 with the aforesaid escape wheel; a set lever 31, pivoted intermediately of its length, -at 32, to the framing and having a downturned rear end 33 engaging the rear end 34 of the escape lever, and a latch lever 35, pivoted intermediately of its length,at 36, to the forward upturned arm 37 of the set lever, said latch lever bearing at its upperend a roller 38, hereinafter referred to as the latch roller or carrying roller, and with which the related cam aforesaid has engagement to accomplish the release of the escape lever from the escape wheel at the proper time to eect a carry.
The latch lever has a rear extension 39 of its lower arm, said extension at its free end being provided with a lateral lug 40, engaging in latched position with a llateral edge or corner 41 of a downturned portion 42 of the framing. The lower arm of the latch lever is provided with a lateral lug 43, and the rear extension of said lever is provided with a lateral lug or stud 44 (shown as rounded), these two last-named lugs being spaced apart to admit of some movement of the latch lever upon its pivot, and through contact respectively with opposite sides of the set lever, limiting this movement in both directions.
The latch lever is held in latched engagement with the frame by a spring 45, at.- tached at one end to the lower lug 43 and at the opposite end to -the framing, this spring acting to move the latch lever individuall upon its pivot until said lug contacts wlth the forward arm of the set lever, and tending then to move the set lever to position with its rear end engaging with the escape lever, as in latched position. This latch spring also in certain cases tends to actuate both the set lever iand the latch 1ever as one part, upon the set lever fulcrum as a center, to move the carrying roller away from the carrying cam. The latch spring is, however, inferior in strength to that of the escape lever sprin (hereinafter referred to) and the segment Fever retracting spring 10. The latch leveror latch is, in one normal position thereof (Fig. 6), latched or engaged with the frame as stated; and in another normal osition (Fig. 5) disengaged from the rame. Fig. 7 shows the parts in normal position, as in Fig. 6, the cam being, however, moved to position about to Contact with the carrying roller.
' The parts being in the positionv shown in Fig. 5, in order to prevent an error by the accidental engagement of the latch lug 4() withthe frame part 41, a stop arm 46 is provided, being pivoted at its upper end to the framing at 47, and having a spring connection 48 which tends to draw it toward and in contact with the lateral edge 41 of the framing aforesaid. The lower end of this stop arm, when so engaged with the framing, projects slightly below the same or below the frame projection 42, for reasons hereinafter stated, and its spring 48 is inferior in strength to that of the latch spring, admitting of the latter'properly engaging the latch lug with the frame, against vthe resistance of the former spring. The stop arm is, however, not long enough to contact with said latch lu when the latch is operated by the carrying roller riding the cam, at times when the driving segment lever of the next higher column is not depressed by its keys, as in Fig. 5. Therefore, whenever the carrying roller passes over the high point of the cam, and the tail extension of the latch is depressed so that its stop lu or stud 44 engages the upper edge .of the orward arm' of the set lever, the stop arm, through its spring, will move or drop over the latch lug 40, .assuming the position shown-in Fig. 5, thereby making it impossible for the latch to again engage the frame projection until after the carrying operation has been properly completed, as in Fig. 10. y
It is notpractical to manufacture the escape wheel with sufficient accuracy to admit of each tooth thereof arresting the escape lever precisely in the same position, and for this reason the framing is provided with a stop pin 4:9 for each escape lever,
and er faging and arresting the latter when it is pr perly engaged with the teeth of the escape wheel.
It will be noted that the retracting spring of the segment lever, acting through the segment lever, escape lever, set lever, latch and carrying roller, `will normally tend to move the carrying roller toward the carrying cam of the next lower wheel, the latch and set lever moving as one part, upon the set lever fulcrum as a center, and the stop stud 44 of the tail extension of the latch engaging the forward arm of the set lever.
The latch lever may be either engaged with or disen aged from the frame when the segment ever is in normal position (shown as horizontal), the segment lever being held against rising above normal to carry, as in Fig. 6, by the bind of the latch upon the frame, thereby holding ythe forward arm of the set lever from moving downward to release the escape lever andv the esca e wheel, the tail arm of the set lever ho ding down the tail arm of the escape lever, against the tension of springs` l() and 50, owing to the set lever being fulcrumed to the framing.
1n order to carry, a segment lever must move upwardly beyond its normal position, and this upward movement is normally prevented by engagement of the escape lever with the escape wheel and with the frame stop pin 49, and by engagement of tail arm of the locked set lever with the tail arm of the escape lever.
Thelatch lever, engaged with the frame as stated, has as its function to maintain the set lever in normal or locked position, holding down the tail arm of the escape lever to normally prevent a carry, unless, of course, the escape lever should be moved bodily downward with the segment lever, and should no carry follow such downward movement, the latch and frame engagement will still be eective to prevent any upward movement above normal of the tail arm of 'theV set lever, that must take place in car- The escape lever 1s provided, near the free end of its rear arm, with a spring 50, attached at one end to an upper extension 51- of the segment lever, this'spring tending to withdraw the forward arm of the escape lever from engagement with the escape wheel, and being inferior in strength to that of the retracting spring 10 of the segment lever, and having no power to interfere with the proper operation of the parts under the action of the said retracting spring 10.
The escape lever is also provided, near the free end of its rear arm, with an upper lever, as in Fig. 8,.and also taking place 1n the upward movement of the segment lever beyondnormal in carrying, as in Fig. 10.
When a segment lever is moved downward for digital value registration, as in Fig. 8, the escape lever will move downward bodily therewith, and the set lever will be moved pivotally by the latch spring until its rear arm contacts with a frame stop 53 to limit its downward movement, which is merely sufficient to admit of the carrying roller passing over the high point of the cam. sition last stated, and the digital value registration of a lower order wheel is made suficient to (through the latch roller engagement with a high part of the cam) raise the forward or upper arm and depress the rear or tail extension of the latch lever of the wheel of higher order, said latch lever will at the same time be released from the frame, as in Fig. 9.
When a segment lever' is depressed for digital value registration, as in Fig. 8, the forward arm of the set lever being, throu h .the latch spring 45, moved upwardly, t e
latch lever is moved bodily therewith to a slight extent, thelug 40 of its tail extension being moved slightly away from the frame part 41, and the latch lever being moved bodily with the set lever, back to restore the latch and frame engagement and prevent a carry in the rise of the segment lever to normal position.
The escape lever being moved bodily downward with the segment lever, and no carry following, as the segment lever approachesnormal position in its upward or return movement, the rear end of the escape lever will encounter the rear end of the locked set lever, the retracting spring 10 of the segment lever continuing to act and overcoming the escape lever spring, so that, as the segment lever continues to travel upward to normal position, the escape lever will be moved upon its own pivot to restablish the interval 4of separation of the carrying position stop 52 thereof from the lower edge of the related segment lever, and to elongate or tension the escape lever spring and also to restore the engagement of the forward end of the escape lever with the escape wheel and frame stop pin, thereby the highest point of the cam then passing from engagement with the carrying roller, the escape lever spring will act to overcome the latch spring, and move' the escape lever and the set lever, each upon its own pivot,
vthe forward end of the escape lever dropping out of engagement with the escape wheel, thereby releasing the segment lever,
and the carrying roller moving toward thev center of the carrying cam, and the latch spring being tensione Normally, 'the carrying position stop of the escape lever is spaced apart from the lower edge of the segment lever, as stated, said stop in the pivotal movement of the escape lever moving into contact with the segment lever, as in Fig. 10, and thereby limitin -the pivotal movement of the escape lever.. his movement of the escape lever is immediately followed by an upward moveyment of the segment lever so released (and of the escape lever bodily therewith), under the influence of the segment lever retracting spring 10, to restore the engagement of the escape lever with the escape wheel, the interval of release of the escape wheel being just suiiicint to admit of ,its being rotated one tooth through the said rise of the segment lever before the wheel is stopped by the rengagement of the escape lever therewith. And the escape` lever so rengaged with the escape wheel will prevent further rise of the segment lever.
In simplex or duplex operation, the segment lever of the higher order wheel in carrying moves upwardly from normal position, as in F ig.J 10, and a key in the same denominational series, or relating to the same segment lever, being depressed for digital value registration (no carry being released from the next lower .wheel duringl said depression), the segment lever is moved downwardly to and below normal position, and it is required that the latch shall be reengaged with the frame and that the segment lever in its return shall be stopped at normal position. To this end, as the segment lever moves downward, theescape lever ,moves downward therewith, and the spring of the latch lever will act to move the set lever and the latch lever as one part, upon the set lever fulcrum as a center, the tail extension of the latch lever traveling upon the lower arcuate surface 54 of the frame extension 42 (said surface struck from the set lever fulcrum as a center) and retaining the separation of its lower lug 43 from the lower edge of the forward arm @f the set lever until the rear or tail lug 40 of the latch is in position to be rengaged with the frame, when the latch spring will act to effect this rengagement, at the same time closing up the said separation or interval. In this operation the stop arm 46 will be moved backwardly from its position in Fig. 5, and its spring tensioned by the tail extension of the latch, just prior to the reengagement -of the latch with the frame.
tion, ready to engage with the tail end of the escape lever as the latter rises again with the segment lever, and will stop the segment lever at normal position. f
In a case wherein a key in the same denominational series, relating top a segment lever in position after a carry, is not depressed, the cam uponthe next lower order wheel will effect this restoration of the segment lever to normal position before a new carry takes place, by lifting the latch lever, through engagement with the latch roller, the rear stud 44 of the latch lever takinga bearing upon the upper edge of the forward arm of the set lever, and the latch lever and the set lever rotating as one part, upon the set lever fulcrum as a center, and when the high part of the cam is reached the restoration will be complete, ready for a new carry, the tail arm of the escape lever being held down by the co-action of the latch roller upon the high part of the cam, ahd the rear stud 44 of the latch lever extension engagingv the upper edge of the forward arin of the set lever. In this operation the escape lever will pivot upon the frame stop pin 49.y
cam is therefore provided with a slight additional rise 5 5, beyond its 9 part, thereby continuing to lift the latch roller and the latch lever as the numeral wheel passes from 9 to O, and when said wheel shall have arrived at the O position the point of the cam will have passed just suiciently beneath the center of the latch roller to cause the curveof the roller, in itsdownward move ment over the high point of the cam, to move thel cam slightly forward of its proper position with relation to the numeral wheel, in order that said roller may be enabled to fall instantly to the low part ofA the can; when the highest part ofthe extension 55 has passed the radially alined center Qf the A The latch, being now rengaged with the frame, will hold the set lever in normal posi-- roll, to thereby admit of the carry, or .of the actuators carrying step aforesaid. The slot and pin connection of the cam and numeral wheel admit of this forward cam movement.
As the latch roller starts to climb the cam again, yit will push the cam slightly 'backs ward to its proper relative position, the pin of the numeral wheel moving to normal or driving position in the slot of the cam. It will be noted here that the relative movement between the numeral wheel and the carrying, cam must be insuiicient to allow the high part of the cam to pass beneath the center of the carrying roller incase the numeral wheel is arrested in the 9 position and the carrying cam advances with relation to the numeral wheel because of its own momentum.
In duplex operation, or in cases where denominational keys ofdilerent columns are operated with overlapping strokes, it is necessary that the carry shall still be properly effected. Take the positions of the parts in Fig. 8, for instance, Where a higher order key or segment lever is shown as depressed for digital value registration, a depression of a lower order key being simultaneous, or following immediately, and the carry being required to be effected, the cam in its rotation will trip the latch lever from its frame engagement, as inl Fig. 9, and admit of the subsequent upward movement beyond normal of the rear arm of the set lever, and will admit ofthe escape lever remaining released from the .escape wheel until the carry is completed. The latch being then tripped, as stated in reference to Fig. 9, the stop arm 46 will at once be moved by its spring to position over the tail extension of the latch lever, and will prevent the latter from being rengaged with the frame while the two segment levers are being depressed and the digital value rotation of the related numeral wheel is taking place, and also while the high point of the cam is passing from engagement with the latch roller and after it has passed from such engagement, until the digital value rotation of the numeral wheel is completed; the rotation of the numeral wheel for the carry following immediately, not upon account of any delay of the carry mechanism, but merely because the segment lever is rotating the numeral Wheel for a digital value registration, and cannot therefore simultaneously rotate the numeral wheel to register' a carry.
And if, in the case stated, the latch relating to a higher order wheel shall be already in tripped position, the stop arm 46 will be already located over the tail extension of the latch lever, as in Fig. 9, and will in the same way and for the same reasons hold the latch lever from being rengaged with the frame While the two segment levere are depressed' ,sse
It will be noted that the escape lever will engage with the escape wheel at the end of a digital value rotation of a numeral wheel, to prevent the latter from running ahead by momentum, and thereby causing an error.
'Ihe after-carry position of the segment lever is a position of rest, and is, with any other position of rest, equally to be regarded as a normal position, although the substantially horizontal position of the segment lever is referred to for convenience as normal position.
