'ferred form of the Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Traction Attachment, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for automobiles. of different types and is designed as a simple and eflicient means whereby a motor vehicle can be easily and quickly extracted from mud holes and the like.
The invention is an improvement upon the structure disclosed in my co-pending application Serial Number 294,680 filed May 5th,
1919, and its primary object is to provide means whereby stretching and possible breaking of the device, due to difference in speed of rearward movement of the front and back portions of the attachment at certain times in the operation of the device,

make it lighter and less expensive than here tofore. and capable of being stowed away in a small space.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as. set forth in the appended claims.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference A-and B designate the rear and front sections, respectively, of the attachment. The section A is formed of a length of rope looped at intermediate points to form spaced arms 2 connected by a portion of the rope, as shown at 3, those portions of the rope forming the arms being held together by wrapping them with cord, wire, or other suitable material, indicated at 4. The free ends of the arms 2 form eyes 5 which can be provided with metal reinforcements as shown at 6. The free terminals of the length of rope are formed into eyes 7. A cross strip 8 of canvas or other strong material connects the arms2 and has term nal eyes 9 slidable on the arms. Thus this strip can be adjusted along the arms to any position desired. Similar strips 10 connect the side portions of the member A and secured to the intermediate portions of these strips 10 is a strip 11 of fabric one end of which is connected to the transverse connecting portion 3 of the'rope. The other end of the strip 11 is secured within a slot 12 formed in a yoke 13 shaped to fit transversely upon the tread portion of the tire on one of the rear wheels of a motor vehicle. Said strip 11 which forms the tread portion of the attachment is longer than the side ropes and is puckered at regulated intervals held in position by cross straps 10 and forms a gully traction, and is form fitting when applied to the wheel. For example a link 15 may be connected to one end of the yoke while the other end of the yoke may be provided with a chain 16 adjustably engaged by a clip 17. The yoke 21 is then connected to the tread ofthefront wheel at a point close to the ground and back of the point of contact be- .tween the wheel and ground. As the yoke 21 reaches the lowest point during its rotation i for attaching one endthereof to the front and'begins to move upwardly at the back I of thehfront wheel the rear wheel will pull on the sectionsA and B fasterthan they will I v be. paid out by the front wheel. -In order to prevent the. sections. from stretching or 28 after passing under the wheel, said leaves breaking as a result of this condition, the leaves 28 have been mounted in the peculiar manner described and shown. Accordingly, during the upward movement of the leaves will swing laterally and rearwardly, as shown in Fig.- 6, thereby compensating for the difference in movement at the front and rear ends of the attachment and at the same time allowing the stems to slide freely from the slots and thereby disengage the section B from the front wheel. If, when applying the attachment to the wheels it is found that it is necessary to travel farther than one revolution of the wheels, a third section (not shown and which issimilar to section B, can
be joined on to section B, by hook 20 at the point where section A is to be connected underordinary conditions. The third section thenis to be-wound around the front wheel over the top of section B in .thesame'manner, and connected to section A as section B would have been connected under ordinary conditions, thereby forming an intermediate section which extends the length of the attachment and allows a longer travel thereon.

A device of the class described including detachably connected front and rear sections, means for securingthe rear section to the rear wheel of a motor vehicle, and a connecting structure for attaching the front section to the front wheel of said vehicle, said structure including movable means for comfpensating for the difierence in rearward the rear wheel of a motor vehicle, a yoke, means for detachably connecting the yoke to the front wheel of said vehicle, obliquely dis posed leaves hingedly connected to the side portions of said yoke and having inclined slots therein, and means on the front section of the device for engagement with the slotted leaves to detachably connect the yoke and front section.
4. A device of the class described including a front wheel engaging section, means wheel, a section for attachment to the rear wheel, means for connecting the sections adjacent the base of the front wheel, each section including a length of. rope looped to form spaced arms at one end connected by an intermediate portion of the rope, cross strips connecting the side portions of each section, and a longitudinally extending strip spaced from the side portions of the rope and secured to said cross strips, and to said intermediate portion.
