FILLER-COVER.
Be it known that I, WLADIMIR VOINA- HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in F iller-Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to. numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to covers for filleropenings, and while I shall describe as a specific embodiment of my invention, a filler cover for "automobile radiators, I do not intend to limit the invention to such use, as it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that my invention may be applied to tanks and any kind of container, generally.
The usual screw cap employed for automobile radiators usually becomes too hot to be handled with any degree of comfort, and
is usually so tightly held that considerable exertion is necessary to loosen it. If it is left loose it is very likely tobe lost. It often falls to the ground on account of it being too hot to be held, and thus accumulates dirt and other foreign matter in the exposed threads and therefore considerable time is required to replace the cap and the threads thereof often become damaged making {the cap useless.
invention has for its object to provide.
a filler-cover of simple, durable and efficient construction, in which the essential parts have been reduced to aminimum and which is readily operable to open or close and which will maintain a tight closure.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in certain novelties ofconstruction and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 1 represents a casing provided with a central bore or aperture 2 extending entirely therethrough, the lower portion of the casing terminating in an annular exteriorly screw-threaded portion 3, designed to have screw threaded engagement with the screw-threaded portion of an automobile radiator opening, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and by means of which the device is secured thereto.
The shape of the casing 1, of the device, is approximately square, although said shape may be of any other desired or convenient form.
Projecting outwardly from the front of the casing 1, preferably cast integral therewith, are two alined apertured lugs 44 to receive the stem or shaft 5 of the handle 6.
Surrounding the shaft 5 between the interior faces of the lugs 4.-4, to protect it from moisture, is a closel fitting tube 7, a similar tube surrounding t at portion of the shaft'extending beyond the casing and located between the handle 6 and said casing.
Hingedly secured to the top of the rear portion of the casing, in any desired or convenient manner, preferably by means of a bifurcated lug 8 is a lid 9.
The under side of the lid is provided with 'an integral annular portion 10, circumferentially grooved to receive, preferably, a rubber gasket or ring 11 of circular cross section, designed to have seating engagement with a curved seat 12 arranged in the interior of the casing, surrounding the central bore or'aperture 2 to form a tight I joint.

One side of the lug 16 is provided with a square portion 21 designed to en age with a shoulder 22 formed on the side 0 the casing as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to limit the movement of the lid in an I outward direction.
pin or stud 23 is secured in said recess, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, to be engaged by the rounded portion of the lug 16 to-limit the movement of the gear wheel 13 when moved in the direction of the arrow indicated in' Fig. 4 of the drawings, after a tight joint has been made between the curved seat 12 and the rubber gasket 11. A cover plate 24 is secured to each side of the casing by means of screws 25 or the like.
It will thus be noted that 'rotation'of the shaft 5 in one direction, to which the pinions 14 are secured and which are operatively connected with the 'ear wheels 13-13, will open the lid 9, whi e rotation of the shaft 5 in the opposite direction will close the lid 9 causing the rubber gasket or ring 11 to have seating engagement with the curved seat 12 arranged in the top of the interior of the casing, thereby forming a tight joint.

Ido not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise'of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein set forth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a
'gasket-- carried by said this 16th casing and operatively connected with means pivotall-ysecured to said means and to the lid and a handle operatively connected with the first named means for moving the said lid into and out of engagement with the opening in said casing.
2. In adevice of the class described, a casing having an opening therethrough, a seat ormed on the interior of. said casing surrounding the said opening, a lid hingedly secured to said casing designed to have seating engagement with said seat, a rubber gaset carried by said lid, means located within recesses formed in the sides of the casing and operatively connected with means pivotally secured to said means and to the lid, and a handle operatively connected with the first named means for moving the said gasket into and out of engagement with the seat in said casing. In a device of the class described, a casing having ail-opening therethrough and provided with recesses in its opposite sides, a seat formed on the interior of said casing surrounding the said opening, a lid hingedly secured to said casing},1 designed to have seating engagement wit said seat, a rubber gasket carried by said lid, a handle rotatively secured to said casing, pinions rigidly secured to said' handle, gear wheels rotatively secured in the recesses in the sides of said casing operatively connected with the said pinions, and connecting links the ends of which are pivotally securedto said gears and to the sides of said lid.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing havin an opening therethrough and provided wit recesses in its opposite sides, cover plates secured to said recessed sides, a seat formed on the interior of said casing surrounding the saidopening, alid hingedly secured to saidcasing, designed to have seating engagement with Saidseat, a rubber lid, a handle rotatively secured to said casing, pinions rigidly secured to said handle, gear' wheelsrotatively secured said said pinlons, and connecting links, and means located limit the movement of saidlidl This specification signed and witnessed day of April, 1920:
