Description

B. MAZURYK. PERMUTATION PADLOCK. APPLICATION FILED AUG.8. 1919.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
M/isy MazuryA UNITED STATES BARTLOMIEJ MAZURYK, OF TUGASKE, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
PERMUTATION-PADLOCK.
Application filed August 8, 1919.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that LBARTLOMIEJ MAZURYK, a citizen Yof Poland, residing at Tugaske, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to that class of locks known as padlocks having hinged shackles.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheap and reliable lock wherein the shackle is firmly held when in locked position against rattling.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following speciication, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-h Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the padlock showing the same in releasing position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the device locked.
Fig. 3 is a front end view of the padlock, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view ihrough the padlock taken on line 1e-4 of Referring to the drawings by characters l of reference, the numeral 5 designates a cylinder or tubular housing having formed adjacent to one end an internal shoulder 6 and having slidably and rotatably mounted therein a cylindrical plug 7, the outer end of which carries a dial plate 8.
The inner end 9 of the plug is conically formed to t the tapered bore of the sliding bolt to be more fully'hereinafter described. A compression coil spring 10 normally urges the plug 7 inwardly as shown in Fin'. 2.
Arranged intermediate of the ends of the housing. 5 is a partition wall 11 having slidably mounted therein the locking bolt 12 provided at its inner end with a conical eX- tension 13 and at its outer end with an angular portion 14.
A tapered axial bore is formed in the tapered extension to receive the conical end 9 of the plug 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In order that the bolt 12 and plug 7 may be rotated together the pawl and ratchet Specification of Letters Patent.

shoulder 6.
Pivotally connected between a pair of lugs 19, formed with the housing 5, is a shackle 20, the free end of which is provided with a notched loop 21 which is adapted to be received through a transverse slot 22 in the housing. The notch 23, in the loop 21, while being of a size to readily receive the reduced end of the conical element 13, will not accommodate its larger end. It Will thus be seen that in order to withdraw the shackle from locked position the sliding bolt must be forced inwardly against the compression of the spring 10.
.In operation, it will be understood that a suitable wrench or key 211 is applied through an opening 25 in the end plate 26 of the casing to the rectangular portion 14C of the bolt, whereupon the bolt, plug, and dial plate are turned until the proper arrangement of the characters on the dial plate, and end of the housing 5 is reached, whereupon the groove 16 in the conical element 13 alines with the pin 17 and thereby permits the bolt to be moved inwardly to free the shackle and permit the lock to open.
lVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that certain changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
1. In a padlock, a cylinder, a bolt slidable and rotatable in the cylinder, said bolt having a longitudinal groove in one end, a shackle pivoted to the cylinder and held in locked position by the bolt, a pin for holding the bolt against sliding movement in one direction, and means to rotate the bolt, to aline the slot with the pin permitting the bolt to release the shackle when moved longitudinally.
2. In a lock, a cylinder having a transverse slot in one side, a shackle pivoted to the cylinder, a notched loop on the shackle for entering the slot in the cylinder, said notched loop having an opening in one side,
a tapered bolt slidable in the cylinder, and adaptedA When in one position to enter the notched loop of the shackle and hold said shackle in locked position, the enlarged end of the bolt having a groove in one side, a pin for engaging the enlarged end of the bolt` and holding the same in locked position, and means for rotating the bolt to aline the groove with said pin for permitting the bolt to he moved into an unlocked position;
3. In a .lock,a cylinder having a trans- Vverse slot in one side, a shackle pivoted to Vthe cylinder, a notched loop on the shackle for entering fthe slot inthe cylinder, said notched loop having -'an opening in one side,
a tapered bolt slidableiin the cylinder, and adapted when in one position to enter the notched loop of the' shackle and hold said shackle'in locked position, the enlarged end of the bolt havingV a groove'in one side, a pin for engaging the enlarged end of the bolt and holding the same in locked position, and means for rotating the bolt to aline the 'groove Wit-h said pin for permitting the bolt to be moved into an unlocked position, and means to indicate to one familiar with the lock that the groove and pin are in alinement. 4
l In testimony whereof I have' aHXed my signature.
