Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 24, 1920. Serial No. 368,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. SEARLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to copy holders and more particularly to the type in which there is provided a stationary line guide and a work support movable vertically with reference to the line guide to present different portions of the work to the line guide, an object of this invention being to provide an improved means for effectively holding the work to the work holder.
To this and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a stationary frame on which the line guide 2 is supported preferably through arms 3 mounted to turn at 1 in the stationary frame in order to accommodate the line guide to work of different thicknesses on the work support or holder. The work support 5 is preferably in the form of a plate guided in any suitable manner on the frame 1 and controlled by a lever 6 in a manner known in the art. All of the foregoing features are old in a broad sense and no claim is made to such parts per se.
The feature of this invention is the means by which the work is held on the work support 5 during the movement of the latter past the line guide 2. This means in this instance embodies a suction chamber 7 formed at the rear of the work holder and having a plurality of openings 8 leading therefrom through the front face of the work holder. The suction in this chamber is controlled by a pipe 9 leading from a suitable suction producing means to a valve 10 preferably arranged on the forwardly projecting arm 11 of the frame 1. This valve in this instance is in the form of a three-way turning plug 12 operating in a casing which has three ways, one of which has a piping 9 connected thereto, another of which, indicated at 13, acts as an exhaust port, and
still another, indicated at 14, is connected with the suction chamber 7 preferably by a flexible tubing 15 or other means which permits the raising and lowering of the work support 5 on the frame 1, this tubing 15 connecting with the suction chamber 7 near the top of the latter so as not to interfere with the descent of the copy holder on the main frame 1.
It will be apparent that the work holder is elevated and lowered through the lever 6 in the usual manner. When it is desired to place work upon the work support 5, the turning plug 12 is turned to connect the pipe 15 with the outlet 13. This, of course, cuts off the suction to the chamber 7 and at the same time permits the air to enter the chamber, thus breaking the vacuum which will, of course, free the work resting against the work support 5 over the openings 8. When it is desired to attach the work to the work support 5, the valve 12 is turned to connect the suction pipe 9 with the conductor or conduit 15 thereby creating a suction in the chamber 7 so that work placed over the openings 8 will be held to the work support.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a copy holder, the combination with a frame, a line guide on the frame, and a work support movable. vertically on the frame with reference to the line guide and at the rear of the latter, of means for holding the Work on the Work support comprising a suction chamber moving with the Work support, a conduit connected to the frame and to the suction chamber and having provision permitting the Work support to move on the frame 'and a manually controllable valve for controlling the suction.
2. A copy holder comprisin'g-aframe, aline guide on said frame, and a -Work sup port movable vertically on the frame With reference to the line guide and at the rear of the latter, of means for holding the Work on the work support comprising a suction 15 chamber moving with the Work support a valve for controlling the suctionmounted in a fixed relation to the frame, and a conduit leading from the valve and-formed to permit the movement of the frame.
