iic it known that l, (ruining-t TV. This invention relates to improvements in electrically driven sewing machines.
Sowing innchincs of the motor drivcn typo now on the innrkct nrc usunll n-ovidml with motors as attachments which are romovnhl i' mounted on the illziljllllli. Those Inuchincs, whilc very ciiicicnt, loo i'c much to be dc ircd as tho motors ocrup r considcrniilc space and. are more or loss in the way. strut-lion, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appcndcd claims, it being understood that such changes may he made in the precise omhodimont of my invention as come within tho scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention, construt-110d according to the best mode I have so For devised for the practical application oi the principles thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the upper portion of my improved elcctricall driven sewing nmchine, parts being broken away and in section to show the interior; construction;
Fig. 2 is an end plan vicv of the improved sowing machine; i
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the tubulnr sh-mdnrd of the improved sewing machine said View being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. l is a transverse sectional View taken on the lined-4 of Fig. 1.
Rofcrring to the drawing. the numeral 5 indicates a tubular standard of a sewing nnichinc 6 a tubular overarm communicating with the standard 5 and projecting latorally therefrom 7 a longitudinally extending drive-shaft journalcd in overarm 6, 8 a aortic-ah lover or actuating rod pivotally conncctcd to a crank 9 formed in shaft 7. and in a shuttle sh'aft operated by the rod 8. A drive orhand wheel 11 is fixed to the portion of shaft 7 projected outwardly of tho standard 5'.
The standard 5 has one side wall thereon bulged outwardly as at 11 to form a recess 12 in which a cylindrical housing or casing 13 is secured. he housing 13 having scoured therein tho field magnets and pole pieces 14 and 15. The housing 13 may be sci cured in its recess 12 in any desirable manner, and has its end extending outwardly of the standard 5 closed as at 16 to protect the brush Incmhcrs 17 engaging the commutator IR rarried by the armature 19. The shaft 20 of tho armature is journally supported by moons of n hearing 2 formed centrally on the closed end 16 ot' the housing and a hear ing memher 2'3 formed on the inner wall of standard 5 and having its bore in axial alinement with the hore ot' hearing it.
The armature shat't'has its inner end journaled in hearing 22 and its other end projeeted outwardly of the hearing 21. and has splined thereon a sleeve 23 earrving a trietion pulley meniher (to he later deserihed) whieh engaged with the periphery of drive wheel 11. In order to adapt the motor to the maehine running in either direetioin the brushes 1? are of the radial type and are mounted on a ring 24 and projeet through elongated slots 25. The ring and brush may herevolved a sntlieient distanee with rela tion to the hore pit-res to to t-hange the ptr larity of said magnets and thus reverse the direetion ot rotation of the armature 19. The brush ring 24 is held in position lrv binding posts 26 whieh extend upwardly and downwardly through the housing end 16.
The pulley memher rarried on the outer end of the armature shaft inelmles the sleeve "23 whirh has its inner end flanged as at QT and its outer end threaded as at 29. and a pair of lilier plates 29 having their periphery oppositely eurved to conform with the periphery or drive wheel l 1. said plates heing spaced apart by means of a eorl: washer or plate 30. The plates 29 and 30 are keyed or otherwise secured to the sleeve 23 and are held thereon by means of a. washer ill retained thereagainst hy means of a nut 32 in threaded engagement with the threaded end of said sleeve.
In a nuniher of maehines. the hand wheel is unhalanred and wahhles or sways from side to side in its rotation, and to eompensate for this side motion.
the sleeve .23 is slidahlv splined to armature shat't Q to pre vent the pulley From moving the shaft longitudinally in its ln'arings and at the same time allow the pulley to follow the hand wheel. As will he liliYlOlltf-l. the annularly grooved periphery of the pulley memher eir gaging the periphery of the hand heel. retains the pullev in position on shaft 20.
The form of pulley just desrrihrd permits the taking up of any lost motion due to exeessive wear. in that the t'urther tightening of nut Il? will eompress the rharaeter or other resilient material Illl in hringing the plates 29 into (loser relation ith rarli other aml thus redueing the are or r. rrature formed thereby. The (0th or other resilient material 30 also provides a t'rietional routaet with the drive wheel ll in that the same proieets slightly above the periphery of the pol ley.
From the foregoing deseription it will he seen that the motor for driving the sewing inaehine is readily removable and all that is necessary to remove the same is to remove the outermost plate 29 of the pulley. than remove drive wheel it and then remove the housing 13 and ari'nature shaft from the standard It will he also seen that the position of the motor witiiin the sewing marhine standard utilizes spare not otherwise employed in that the standard forms a proteetiou tor the motor.
