FELIX L. GOFFAUX, 0F ARNOLD, PENNSYLVANIA.
GLASS-DRAWING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed April 12, 1919. Serial No. 289,634.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX L. GOFFAUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arnold, in the county of Westmorelandand State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass-Drawing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in glass drawing machines and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for drawing several sheets of glass at one time.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for drawing a rectangular tube of glass and to provide roller means for engaging the inner corners of said tube with means for inserting or Withdrawing the roller means through the bait.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the bait that enough of the melted glass will be held thereby so as to prevent too rapid cooling off of said bait.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view showing a portion of the elevator shaft with the elevator and the bait attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the apparatus and showing the roller means in place;
Fig. 3 is a cross section;
Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the roller means with the rollers in closed position;
Fig. 5 is a cross section through the bait;
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing how the roller engages with the corner of the glass tube.
In these views 1 represents the elevator shaft and 2 the elevator. This elevator is raised and lowered by means of the cables 3 passing over suitable pulleys which are operated as usual. The elevator is provided with the projecting hooks 4 for en aging the holes 5 in the uprights 6 on the bait 7. This bait comprises a rectangular frame 8 made of channel iron with the channel outermost. The uprights 6 are secured to the inner faces of two of the opposing sides of said frame and each pair of the upper parts of said uprights are connected together by the cross piece 9 which is provided with the holes 10 for receiving the removing hooks. Each side of the frame has hinged to its outer face a channel bar 11 with the channel facing inwardly so that the channel frame and said channel bars form a chamber 12. The lower edges of the inner and outer bars are cut away to provide a slot 13 in the bottom of the frame which communicates with said chamber. Thus when the bait is dropped in the molten material, the chamber will be filled thereby and thus the bait will be prevented from cool ing off too rapidly. As the elevator is raised to withdraw the bait from the receptacle containing the molten material a rectangular tube of glass will be formed. After the bait has been drawn up a certain distance I pass a tubular member 14 through the shaft and the bait with its lower end projecting into said tube. The upper end of said tubular member is adjustably supported at the top of the shaft. A rod 15 passes through said member and four arms 16 are pivotally connected with the lower end of said rod. The outer ends of these arms are forked as at 17 and rollers 18 are journaled in .said forks. As shown, the periphery of each of said rollers is of substantially wedgeshape in cross section so that when said roller is placed in the corner of the tube it will engage with the edges of the two adjoining sheets. The arms are pivotally connected with the lower end of a tubular member by the links 19 so that by moving said rod 15 vertically the rollers will be moved into or out of engagement with the corners of the tube. By this means the rollers may be easily passed through the device or removed therefrom. It will be seen that the rollers may contact with the glass tube at any desired point by means of the adjustability of the tubular member 14. After a drawing is completed the holes 10 are engaged by hooks carried over suitable pulleys and then the elevator is detached from the bait and pulled up to the top of the shaft with the rollers in folded position. The bait is then lifted and carried to the proper place for capping off.
When it desired to clean the bait it can be easily done by swinging the outer bars 11 away from the inner frame to open the frame, said frames forming a chamber and chamber.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7
What I claim is I 1. A device of the class described comprising an elevator, a bait of rectangular form carriedby saidelevator, a vertically movable supporting member and rollers carried by'said member for engaging the glass tube being formed.
2. A device of the class described comrisin an elevator a rectan ular bait formed of a frame of channel iron, an outer frame of channel 1I'0I1 hlnged to the lnner supporting means carried by the inner frame.
3. A device of the class described comprising a shaft, an elevator therein, a rectangular bait carried by said elevator, a tubular member adjustably connected with the shaft and extending through said elevator and bait, a rodpassing through said tubular member and vertically movable therein, arms pivotally connected to the lower end of said rod, links connecting said arms to the lower end of the tubular member and rollers carried by the outer ends of said arms.
in testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
BELLA L. GOFFAUX.
