DELIVERY MECHANISM.
Original application filed October 8, 1915, Serial No. 54,828.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Divided and this application filed March 16,
1918., Serial No. 222,857.
To oil 10/; am it may concern.
he it known that I, CLYDE E. SwIoK, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and in the State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Delivery Mechanism, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for an object to provide a mechanism adapted to receive webs of paper after the same have been operated upon by a machine, and deliver the webs properly therefrom.
lVhile my invention is not restricted in use to any particular machine, it is especially adapted to be used in connection with the paper folding machine described and claimed in my copending application No.
8, filed October 8th, 1915, of which the present application is a division.
For purposes of illustration I have shown one embodiment of my invention which, however, is to be considered merely asillustrative of many other embodiments within the principle thereof. In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the machine embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a central section of such a machine, the section being taken parallel to the plane of Fig. l.
I have illustrated my invention as used in connection with the paper interfolding my copencling application, Serial No. 54,828 filed OctoberSth, 1915, but only such parts of the said machine which are necessary to a disclosure of the principle of my invention, are shown, reference being hereby made to the said application for a full disclosure of the complete machine. Such machine comprises, in a gen eral way, a frame 1 within which are placed two similar paper interfolding rolls 2 and 3, mounted respectively upon shafts 4 and 5, which shafts are driven by suitable gears 6 and 7 As the two cylinders, togetherwith the de livery mechanism associated withjeach, are exactly alike, with the exception of being displaced angularly 90 with respect to one another, but one of such cylinders and delivery mechanism, are herein described. The interfolding cylinder 2 has thereon a pair of stationary paper gripping jaws 8, adapted to cooperate with movable jaws 9,
from the folded devices, not necessary to be described or in a groove 15 in which latter are actuated by arms 10 having rollers 11 engaging the cam surface 12. Blades 13 are mounted respectively at angles of 90 from the grieving jaws 8 and 9, so that, as the cylinders 2 and 3 rotate, the blades 13 of one cylinder will pass in between the gripping jaws 8 and 9 of the other with result that webs of paper, passing over the rolls 2 and 3, are alternately folded within and gripped by such jaws. As the jaws 8 and 9 pass out of engagement with the blades 13 after having received the paper therein, rollers 11 are moved by cam surface 12 to open the jaws so as to disengage them webs of paper. Suitable shown in connection with the present invention, ordinarily are also used to sever the webs of paper at proper points so as to produce folded or interfolded sheets of paper, alternate sheets of which are gripped between the jaws 8 and 9 of roll 2 and roll 3.
In order to deliver the webs of paper from the roll 2, I employ a stripping arm 14 which is adapted to engage beneath the paper, and thus separate the latter from the roll; in the present form, such arm works the periphery of the roll 2, and is periodically moved into and out of operative position at proper intervals by means of cams 16, which engage a roller 17 mounted upon the end of an arm 18 pivoted on a shaft 19, which arm 18 also carries the stripping arm 14.
A suitable coil spring 20 holds the roller 17 normally advanced, so that the stripping arm 14 is in withdrawn position.
Beneath the stripping arm 14 I have shown a 'fiXGCl tumbler 21 which carries a rotatable shaft 22 having a tumbler arm 23 mounted thereon. A shaft 24 carries a gear 25 which engages with the gear 6 of roll 2, and an additional gear 26 on said shaft engages a gear 27 on shaft 22, so as to rotate the latter, together with the tumbler arm 23.
In the operation of the present embodiment of my invention, webs of folded paper will be gripped between the jaws 8 and 9, as above describechand stripping arm 14- will be raised by the engagement of cams 16 with roller 17, to extend into groove 15 between the webs of paper and the cylinder, as the said webs pass from the point of engagement between rolls 2 and 3. Movable jaws 9 are then opened by the engagement 7 men of my invention,
changes will be made therein which will still be within the spirit thereof as defined same alternately 1. In combination,
moving said of roller 11 with cam surfacey12, and the between stripreleased webs 'of paper pass ping arm 14: and the stationary tumbler 21. The folded webs of paper are held-between these two members until the tumbler arm 23 is rotated to remove tween the same, and deliver it to a traveling .belt 28 for instance. 7
It will be understood that a sim1lar de-- livery mechanism operates upon the roll 3 to deliver the folded webs of paper fromt'he delivered from roll 2, if the delivery mechanism be used in comi'ection with the illustrated type of folding machine. While I have shown a specific embodiit is obvious that many having a groove therein, a pivoted stripping f so " and the roll, and
arm mounted adjacent thereto, and a cam 'mountedon said roll for periodically moving said arm'into position within the groove 7 to engage .the folded 8. In combination,
paper. 7 a paper the paper when so fixed member, and the paper from said 4. In combination, a' stripping arm mounted ad acent thereto, means for periodically moving said arm into and out of position between thefolded paper a member adapted to be engaged by said'arm tween the two.
' 5. In combination, a paper folding roll, a stripping arm pivoted adjacent thereto, means for periodically moving said arm intoand out of position between the folded paper and the roll, and a fixed tumbler to hold the paper beadapted to beeng'aged by said arm when in inoperative position to hold the paper against said fixed tumbler.

a paper'folding roll,
"comprising a fixed member adapted to be engaged by said arm to hold the paper between thetwo, and means for removing the paperfrom between said member and arm. In combination, a paper folding roll, a stripping arm pivoted adjacent thereto, means for periodically moving said arm into and out of position. between the folded paper and the roll, a fixed tumbler adapted to be engaged by said arm when in inoperative position to hold-the paper against said fixed tumbler, and a rotating tumbler arm adapted to remove the paper from between said stripping arm and-fixed tumbler.
8. In combination with a paper roll, of a stripping device for'the same comprising a pair of members one of which is fixed adapted to receive the'p'aper therebetween,
for removing the paper from between said members.
'9. The combination of a paper roll, of a and the roll, a
stripping device for-the same comprlsing a move the paper from engagement therewith.
10. In combination, a paper folding roll, a stripper for stripping the folded paper therefrom, and a stationary tumbler cooperating withthestripper to hold the folded web'of paper therebetween. .fllLIn combination, a'paper folding roll, a stripperfor stripping the folded paper therefrom, a stationary tumbler cooperating with the stripper to hold the folded web of paper'therebetween, and a tumbler arm for removing the folded web from the stripper andfstationary tumbler.
12. In combination, a paper folding'roll, an arm mounted adjacent thereto and adapted to strip the paper from the roll, means for temporarily holding the paper whenso stripped, and means for removingthe paper from said holding means comprising a fixed tumbler. f I
13. In combination, a paper folding roll, means adapted to strip the paperffrom the roll, means for temporarily holding the paperwhen so stripped, and means for removing the'paper from said'holding means tumbler.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand. i
