Description

W. SCHURR.
ATHLETIC EXERCISER.
APPLICATION HLED JUNE 2, 1919.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920..
IN'ILHELM SCHURR, OF LANG-NAU-ON-TI-IE-ALBIS, SWITZERLAND.
ATHLETIC EXERCISER.
Application filed June 2, 1919.
I 10 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WVILHELM SoHURR, a Swiss confederate, residin at Langnau-onthe-Alhis, Canton Zurich, gwitzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Athletic Exercisers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to athletic exercisers for strengthening the muscles of hands and arms.
Among existing devices of this kind there are provided elastic or spring-controlled contrivances which produce the desired effect less on account of their weight than through the effort the hand is put to in repeatedly compressing elastic parts so as to react on the muscles of the arm. These devices have generally been constructed of metal parts fitted together, whereby they are necessarily rendered comparatively expensive especially those composed of castings and springs.
The object of my invention is to provide a springy or elastic dumb-bell or athletic exerciser, for the hands and arms, and which is made of a single piece of wood or other convenient material suitably slotted to form three combined elastic parts, strips or languetes.
To render the invention clear, I will describe the same fully with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a perspective face view of a suitable form by way of example only.
In a flat piece of wood or other material Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Serial No. 301,291.
1 I produce or cut, from opposite ends 2, slots such as 3 which advantageously are slightly curved as shown or of any other configuration and which leave an intermediate strip or bridge 4L and external prongs 5. Naturally it is preferable though not absolutely imperative to make this device in a single piece The parts 4 and 5 are thus rendered elastic so as to possess more or less spring force or resistance.
For practisingwith this exerciser, the device is taken edgewise in the hand and the prongs 5 are then compressed whereby the spring force both of the prongs 5 as also that of the bridge 4 has to be overcome.
My improved exerciser is very simple to make and carry out, and it is extremely cheap when made of Wood.
It can be produced in different sizes so as to suit adults and children or young people by suitably determining the cross-section of the prongs 5 and bridge 4. The form of this exerciser may be altered to suit various requirements Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
An elastic athletic exerciser made of a I single piece of oblong Wood, a shoulder at each end thereof, a longitudinal prong extending from each shoulder in opposite directions, and a longitudinal elastic bridge uniting said shoulders.
