MAX MARTIN, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
j METHOD or MAKING vAsEs.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that I,VMAx MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State .of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Vases, of which the following is a speciication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f j
This invention relates to the manufacture or making of vases and particularly to devices of this class designed for outdoor use, or for use in large buildings of any kind or class, and the invention consists an improved method of making articles of the class specified, whereby such articles are formed from reinforced cement or concrete, waterproof material and brick, and whereby such articles may be made strong and durable and at a comparatively small cost and of any desired shape or conguration.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and in which Figure l is a semi-sectional side view of a vase made according to my invention; and,
Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Y
In the practice of my invention I provide a central core a made of wood and consist ing of separate detachably connected parts indicated by dotted lines in Figs. l and 2, and the form or shape of said core will determine, as will be understood, the form or shape of the vase.
I also provide a wire mesh jacket or casing b, which is of the same form as the core a but which is of greater dimensions than said core, whereby a space o is formed between the wire mesh jacket or casing b and the core, said space being of predetermined dimensions, and the core and wire mesh casing, the latter. being preferably of what is known as one-half inch mesh, are so spaced one within the other, this operation being performed by preferred way, that the transverse dimensions of the space c may be regulated to any desired extent according to the size or which it is desired.
dimensions of the vase to make.
The next step in the process consists in Specification of Letters Patent.
any desired means or in anyv Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
seriai No. 324,364.
filling the space o with cement or concrete, this operation being performed by working said cement or concrete throughV the jacket or casing b' with a trowel or in any other suitable way until said space is entirely lilled with the cement or concrete, after which more lcement or concrete is applied Yuntil the jacket or casing Z) is entirely covered and inclosed thereby as shown in the drawing, and this method of procedure forms an inner body or base for the vase, which is composed of reinforced concrete or cement, the reinforcement consisting of the wire mesh jacket or casing o which isentirely inclosed therein.
The next step in the process consists in covering the said reinforced body with waterproof material d of any suitable kind, and this waterproof material may form the bottom of the vase, or the central part thereof as shown in Fig. l; and after the main inner body portion of reinforced concrete has kbeen covered by the waterproof material, the entire vaseis inclosed or provided with a finishing outer wall e, consisting of terra cotta or other bricks built up from the bottom as clearly shown in Fig. l, and as indicated in Fig. 2, the best kind of cement being used in this operation, and as will be understood, the outer wall e of the vase may be composed of bricks of any desired shape or form, or said outer wall may consist of inlay work of any kind or class.
It will be understood, of course, that vases of any desired size, shape or form may be made in this manner, and said vases may be made as strong and durable as necessary or desirable, and in the process of forming the vase herein described the jacket or casing b may lirst be provided and the core ay placed therein, or said core may first be built up and the jacket or casing b placed therearound in any desired manner; and changes in and modifications of the details of the process herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The process herein described of making vases which .consists in providing a central core of wood consisting of separate detachably connected parts, providing a wire mesh jacket or casing in which said core is inclosed, said jacket or casing being of greater" dimensions than Said core and said. parts. ybeing so placed as to space between them,. then illing in! said space with plastic cement 'Worked through inclosing said vWire mesh jacket or casing in said cement, then applying Waterproof material to the reinforced cement body thus formed, thenjinclosing said'body yand the Waterproof material in an outer Wall consisting of brick vor inlay Work, and then re-` moving said core. l j
2. VThe process herein described of manufacturing vases andthe like which vconsists in providing a suitable core, inclosing` said corel in a jacket of openwork material Which is spaced from said core, `then applying ceform a continuons j ment to said .core and said jacket to iill the' Yspace between said jacket and core and to embed the jacket in said cement, then ap- -Y plying a coating of Waterproof material to Vthe structure thus formed, then inclosing the Wire 4mesh jacket creasing andv entirely said structure with the Waterproof material thereon in a brick construction to form a complete vaseand then removing said core from the vase thus formed.
ln testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my invention I have signedmy name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 16th day 'of Septemberrl919. f
