The reducing valve lll is usually adjusted to deliver twenty-two pound pressure on the water in the water tank for forcing it throughout the car. Necessary adjustments of this valve are made by the nut at the top thereof.
The foregoing lettered description relates to parts of the car equipment which are old and well known and constructive details thereof are not herein necessary. An example thereof is illustrated in the catalogue of lvVestinghouse Air Brake Company in Part Catalogue No. 32171 of December 1910.
This testing apparatus 'for determining whether or not the governor valve and reducing valve hereinbefore referred to are in proper condition consists of a portable device comprising a main pipe l0 provided at one end with a coupling member ll adapted to be connected with the air-hose of a station air pla-nt orof the train system and at the other end with a coupling member l2 adapted to be connected with the air supply pipe l) of the water distrfbution system ofan individual car. This pipe has a stop cock 13 which is normally open, the open position of the actuating handle being` transverse to the pipe in reverse of the usual construction.
A testing reducing valve 2O is mounted in the pipe l0. This testing reducing valve is of the same construction as the governor valve G of the water distribution system and is set to operate at alower pressure than said system governor valve, the testing reducing valve being at forty five degrees whereas the system governor valve is set at fifty degrees. This pipe l0 and its reducing valve 2O are utilized in testing the governor valve of the car when in position in the. water distribution system as lhereinafter described.
A by-pass pipe 30 extends substantially 1 parallel. ,with the main pipe l0 and a lateral pipe'l is connected at one end with said Aadapted to receive a system governor val main pipe between the stop cock 13 and the testing reducing valve 20 and at its other end with said by-pass pipe near its rear end. A transverse pipe 32 is connected at its off end with the front end of said bypass pipe and a downward pipe 33 connects said transverse pipe 32 with the main pipe l0 in front ofthe testing lreducing valve 20.' A valve 3A in the off end of said pipe 32 is operative to close communication between the by-pass pipe 30 and the transverse pipe 32. An upward elbow extension 35 is connected with the near end of the transverse pipe 32 and carries a four-way coupling 39 to which is attached a pressure gage 36and a blow olf cock 37 therefor. A four-way coupling 38V connects the pipes 32, 33 and 35 and another hereinafter described.
A retarding device Ll0 is mounted in the by-pass pipe 30. This retarder conprises coupled members l-l and A2 carrying an intervening disk 43 provided with a minute port de, through which the air is made to pass. The purpose of this retarder is to prevent shock and injury to the gage by preventing' high tension air from the source of supply coming suddenly in contact with the gage. ln other words this retarder permits the air to pass through slowly so as to build up the pressure gradually on the farther side thereof.
A short test tube 5()V is mounted in the coupling 39 atf-Uhe upper end of the elbow pipe 35 and entends rearward therefrom. This test tube is provided with a stop cock 5l and at its rear end with a coupling 52 G for testing. The by-pass pipe 30, the test tube 50 and the intermediate connections just hereinbefore described, are employed as hereinafter described in testing the governor valve G when detached from the system.
A test tube member 60 for a detached reducing lvalve H is connected by a double elbow pipe 6l with the upper branch of the four-way coupling 38 and extends rearward substantially parallel with the by-pass pipe 30 with which it cooperates. This test tube member is provided with a stop cock 62 and at its rearI end with a coupling 63 adapted to receive one side of the reducing valve to be tested. The by-pass pipe 30 in rear of the lateral connecting pipe 3l is provided with a stop cock 64e. This by-pass pipe has at its rear end an upward extension 65 .which is connected by an elbow 66 with a forward extending test member 67, which carriesY a coupling 68 adapted topreceive the other side of the reducing valve to be tested. The cock 51 is closed, the valve Se closed and the cocks i3, 62 and 64 are opened. rlhen the passes from the pipe 10 through the lateral branch pipe 3l into the by-pass pipe 30, thence throughthe upward extension 65, elbow 66 and test member 6? into and through the reducin` b b valve H to be tested ,thence through the test member 60, through the double elbow pipe 6l, the four-way coupling 88, through the downward pipe 33 from said coupling' into the pipe 10 in front of the reducing valve 20 and thence into the car hose which is connected with thecoupling 12. rlhe car hose acts as a reservoir in which to build up back pressure, the angle cock (not shown) in the car which closes said hose to Vthe interior pipe system being shut off. The back pressure as it is built up is indicated on the lgage 36. As soon as a pressure of twentytwo pounds to the inch is registered it is evident` that the reducing valve is correct. lf the pressure on the gage is in excess of or below twenty two pounds or other desired setting of said reducing valve H said valve is readjusted until its proper passing pressure is indicated on the gage. rlhis is done by removing the cap and adjusting the tension screw of the reducing valve in amanner well known to those skilled in the art. When these tests show through the gage 36 a proper working condition of the ref ducing valve H it is removed from the testing apparatus and replaced in its proper position inthe car equipment and the work is` completed.
This invention is not limited to the partiular embodiment hereinbefore described; on the contrary it includes various embodiments and variations ot parts withinthe scope ci the following claims. Y

l. A portable combined situ and individual testing' apparatus for the water supply system of an individual railway car,
Vsaid apparatus comprising a situ testing means, including a piping, brake hose coupling members, a testing reducing'valve and an air gage connected therewith, operative in connection with the system for testing therein, an individual the governor valve of the system while in situ therein, an individual testing means including an extension connected with said piping and adapted to receive said governor valve tor testing'when detached from the system, and means adapting said apparatus to perform said testing functions successively.
2.v A portable Vcombined situ and individual testine` apparatus for the water supply system of an individual railway car, said apparatus comprisinga situ testing means including a piping, brake hose coupling members,l a by-pass pipe and an air gage connected wit i said piping, operative in connection with the system for testing the reducing valve or" the system while in situ testing means, including .tube extensions adapted to receive said. reducing` valve, for testing said reducing valve when detached lrom the system, and means adapting said apparatus to perform said functions in succession.
3. portable combined situ and individual testing rr-pparatus for the water' supply system or an individual railway car, said apparatus'comprising a situ testing means, including a piping, brake hose coupling members, a testing reducing valve and an air gage connected'with said piping, operative in connection with the system while in situ therein, a situ testing means including 'a by-pass pipe connected with said piping, operative in connection with thesystem for testing the/reducing valve thereoin while in situ therein, an individual testing means including extension connected with said piping and adapted to receive said governor 'valve for testing Vwhen detached from the system, individual testing means, including tube extensions connected with said piping, adapted for testing said reducing valve when detached from the system, and means adaptingv said apparatus to perform said functions oney after another.

A testing 'apparatus i'or water distributing systems of railway cars comprising a main pipe provided at its opposite ends with brake house coupling members adapted respectively for connection with the brake hose coupling member of an air supply plant and the brake hose coupling member orn the air supply pipe of said water distributing system, a testing reducing valve mounted in'said pipe and adapted to receive the high pressureainof an air plant on one side and pass it through ata comparatively low pressure on the other sideand an air gageconnected with said pipe on the low side of said testing reducing valve.

A testing apparatus for water distributing systems of railway cars comprising a piping provided at its opposite ends with brake 'hose coupling members respectively adapted for connection with the brake l member of the air Y said piping air gage hose coupling member of the air supply plant and `with the brake hose coupling supply' pipe of the water distributing system, a retarder disposed in between said coupling members and adapted to pass the high pressure air entering from the source to and a gage mounted in said piping.

A testing apparatus for water dis- A tributing systems of railway cars comprising a main pipe provided atv opposite ends with coupling ymembers adapted respectively for connection with an air supply plant and the air supply pipe of the water distributing system, a testing reducing valve mounted in said pipe and adapted to receive the high pressure air of the air plant on one side and pass it through at a compara-v tively low pressure on the other side, an connected with said pipe on the ,low side of said testing reducing valve, and
a by-pass pipe connected to said main pipe on opposite sides of said testing reducing valve and provided with a retarder which permits the high pressure air to pass slowly through said'by-pass pipe. A

uting systems of railway cars comprising a main pipe provided at its opposite ends with coupling members adapted respectively :tor connection with an air supply plant and the air supply pipe of the water distributing system, a testing reducing valve mountedin said pipe and adapted to receive the high pressure air of the air plant on one sidev and pass it through at a comparatively low pressure on the other side, an air gage connected with said pipe on the low side of said testing reducing valve, a by-pass pipe connected to said main pipe on opposite sides of said testing reducing valve and provided with a retarder which permits the high pressure air to pass slowly through said by-pass pipe, and a valve for closing communication between said by-pass pipe and said main pipe.

A testing apparatus for water distributing systems of railway cars comprising a main pipe provided at its opposite ends with coupling members adapted respectively for connection with an air supply plant and the air supply pipe of the water distributing system, a testing reducing valve mounted inl said pipe and adapted to receive the high pressure of the air plant on one side and high pressure air to pass slowly through said by-pass pipe, a pipe connected with said by-pass pipe and gage, a stop cock in said last named pipe, and a test tube adapted to the car system, i
