Be it known that I, ERNEST KARL, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Litchfield, in the County olf-Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and Improved Adjustable Chase and Lock-y up for Printing, Cutting,` and Creasing Presses, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements'inj Y range of adjustment.
A further object is to improve upon the construction illustrated and described in my application for patent filed October 26, 1918, and given Serial No.V 259858.
With these and otherobjects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, andl combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter describedand pointed out inthe claims. 7

6 and 7 represent vertical adjustable standards in the chase A'which are connecta clamp or frame to lock-up the plate, type,
or other similar devices. The upper ends of the bars'or uprights' 6 and 7 are beveled or rabbeted vasshow'n at 10, and engage the correspondingly shaped inner face of the bar 1 as'illustrated at 111, so that a wedging action is had when the'innerv chase vis inserted in the outer chase. Y
The bar 6-is providedV at one end with a beveled tongue 12, which is adapted to vlitl into any of a series of similarly shaped recesses 13 inthe bar 1to positively hold the bar 6 against movement longitudinally of the chase A,- butpermit this bar to be'variously positioned in accordance with the use ofthe device. v 1
The vertical-bars or uprights 6 and 7 are provided at their outer faces adjacent one end with notched enlargements 14, and notched blocks 15 are located against said bars or uprights adjacent their other ends on the same sides of the bars as-are the enlarge'- ments V14. The blocks 15-and the enlargements 14 are connected by turnbuclrles 16,
which permit the adjustment of the blocks' 15l toward or away from the enlargements 14.
The internally screw threaded' .sleevesl of the turnbuckles are made integral with the enlargements 14 and blocks 15 respectively, andthe opposit'ely screw threaded' adjustable member'of the turnbuckle V1(5"is made witha head i,18 which is adapted toY be turned to'adj ust the blocks relative to the enlargements, as it will be readily under-- stood. The bars or uprights 6 and Tarelongitudinally `slotted,as shown at 19,and in order to provide these slots, the bars or uprights 6 and 7 are made up-of a number otpartss'y rigidly securedtogether, but may, of course, be variously made without ydeparting vfrom the invention.
-The upper bar 8 is' provided atits upper;
edge with notches'20, and stays'21 extend through the recessed' ends 22 ot the `barB and through the slots 19 of the barsv or uprights 6 and 7- and are provided at their'ends with transverse pins 23 and 24 respectively. The pins 23 engage in the notches 20 of the bar 8 andthe pins 24 engage in any of thej series of notches of the blocks 15'.
Stays 25, corresponding tothe stays' 21, connectthe llowerv bar 9 with the notched enlargements 14 and these stays 25 have pins 26y engaging in notches 2 7 in the lower face ot the bar 9 and have pins 28 in thein'other? ends'engaging the notched enlargements 1-4. The stays are of general compound curvature which makes itpossible to conform to the varying size of the rectangular frame formed by-the bars 6,7, S and 9, and these stays with their Vpins can be readily located in the notches around the plate or type to fit the same. After the parts areproperly fitted,`the turnbuckles 16 are adjusted to draw the blocks l5 toward the enlargements: 14C and securely lock-up the plate or type.
The horizontal bars 8 and 9 are bowed or curved longitudinally, this curvature being relatively slight, but sufficient to give a spring pressure at the center of the bars against the plate or type when the bars are in position and the pressure on the ends of the bars will, of course, straightenthe bars, yet the pressure at the center thereof is always maintained. Y
It will be noted that with my improved mechanism, the operation can be quickly performed and the device will securely clamp the plate or type set up, and by rea.- son of the structure above described, while the parts are adjustable, they are rigidly fixed when once clamped in position.
Furthermore, itwill be noted that I dispense altogether with locking screws at upper end of the uprights as in the application above referred to.
I have not attempted to describe the use of my improved device as illustrated in connection with a printing press as its use 1s identical with the use of the device in my application above described.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and'hence 1 do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A device of the character described, comprising an outer chase, vertical bars adjustably supported in the outer chase, horizontal bars between the vertical bars, fixed notched extensions on the outer faces of the verticalbars adjacent one end of the latter,
buckles connecting said blocks and extensions, and stays connecting the notched extensions with the lower bar and the notched l blocks with the upper bar.
2. A device of the character described, comprising an outer chase, vertical bars adjustably supported in the outer chase, horizontal barsbetween the vertical bars, fixed notched extensions on the outer faces of the vertical bars adjacent .one end of the latter, notched blocks on the outer faces of said vertical bars adjacent their other ends, turnbuckles connecting "saidblocks and extenfaces of said vertical bars adjacent their other ends, turnbuckles connecting said blocks and extensions, stays connecting the notched extensions with the lower bar and the notched blocks with the upper bar, said vertical bars having longitudinal slots therein receiving the stays, said horizontal bars having notched edges, and pins on the stays engaging the notched edges of the horizontal bars and the notched members on the vertical bars.
4. A device of the character described, comprising an outer chase having beveled or rabbeted surfaces on its upper member, and a rabbeted lower member, vertical bars having beveled or rabbeted upper ends and rabbeted lower ends engaging said faces of the Aouter chase members, one of said chase members having a series of notches therein, a tongue on one end of one of the vertical bars engaging in any of said notches, horizontal bars connecting the vertical bars, and adjustable means carried by the vertical bars and adapted to adjust the horizontal bars toward andv away yfrom each other.
5. A device of the character described, comprising an outer chase having beveled or rabbeted surfaces on its upper member, and a rabbeted lower member, vertical bars having beveled or rabbeted upper lends and rabbeted lower ends engaging said faces of the outer chase members, one of said chase members having a series of notches therein, a tongue on one end of one of the vertical bars engaging in any of said notches, horizontal bars connecting the vertical bars, adjustable means carried by the vertical bars and adapted to adjusty the horizontal bars toward and away from each other, and curved runners on the end members of the outer chase constituting. ink roller carriers.
6. A device of the character described, comprising an outer chase, vertical bars movably connected with the chase, horizontal bars between the vertical bars, said horizontal bars curved or sprung longitudinally, and devices at the ends of the horizontal bars securing them to the vertical bars.
