the elevator whenever it is desired to hold v the elevator against movement to" manipulate the parts thereof, aswill be readily understood. Y "The elevator 6 is formed'with a reservoir 9 'which is of general cylindrical shape throughout the greater portion of its length and is adapted-to receive a composition 10 for marking the goods. This composition is of a plasticnature and may be or" any de-' sired color. The cover v17 preferably has screwthreaded engagement with'the reservoir 9 as shown at 19, and is made with spanner receiving notches20 in its outer face.
The elevator 6 is made in itsupper portioniwith a bore 21 andin its lower portion with a bore 22 of appreciably less'diameter than the bore .21 and sa-id bore22 is of the same diameter as the openlng 12 in plate 18 and is located in alinement with an opening '23 in the bottom plate 141 A plunger 25 is mounted in thelargerjbore 21 andhas a re.-

provided on'the'u'pper end of the plunger 25 The reduced end 26 of the plunger'25 is made with a do ve-tailed recess 31 to receive a dove-tailed tenon 32 on a die to. removably connect the die to the'plunger. This die fits within the reduced bore 22 of the elevator 6 and is movable through the openings 12 and 23 to eject the Composition and force. it into the goods, I g
A platen 34 is located below the plunger and supported by the base 2. This platen 34 preferably has a screw threaded shank 35 screwed into a threaded opening 36 in the base 2 and is made with spanner receivin notches 37 to receive a spanner wrench an permit its vertical adjustment. screw 38, which is similar in construction to the platen 34, is adjustably located in a screw threaded opening 39 in the base 2 below a circular enlargement 40 on the bottom plate 14, and a coiled spring 41 is located between the plate 14 and the base 2 and is centered by means of the enlargement 40 and the screw 38. This spring 41 exerts an upward pressure on the elevator tending to elevate the same and is weaker than the spring 27 so that it is compressed before the spring 27 is compl'essechas will more fully hereinafter ap ear.
bell crank lever 42 has a slot and pin connection 43 with the casing 1 and at its angle is connected by a pivot 44 between two arms 45 projecting from the elevator 6. The lower end of the lever 42 has a slot and pin connection 46 with the plate 13 and a set screw 47 is projected through the end wall of casing 1 and limits the movement of this lever inone direction, as shown in Fig. 1, which limits the upward movement of the elevator. 7
1n the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 1 illustrate a bow spring between the lever 42 and the elevator 6 which operates to raise the elevator and takes the place of the spring 41 in the preferred form. In this modification 1 also illustrate a plunger 49 on top of the composition 10 which is pressed downwardly by a coiled spring50 engaged by a disk 51 on the lower end of a stem 52. This stem 52 is provided at one edge with a series of ratchet notches 53 which are engaged by a spring finger 54 on the plunger 25 so that. at each operation of the plunger, the stem 52 will be moved downwardly to put the spring 50 under compression. A frail ratchet spring 55 is mounted in the cover 56 of the reservoir and projects through a slot 57 therein and this spring holds the stem 52 against upward movement. The finger 54 is relativelyweak so that when the spring 50 is under the desired compression, the finger 54 will ride over the ratchet notches 53 in both directions and will move the stem downwardly only after the spring 50 is expanded. The
purpose of this construction is to maintain the spring 50 under a suitable compresslon sufficient to eject the composition 10. When it is desired to release the stem, the outwardly projecting end of the ratchet spring 55 can be manually moved to one side as will be readily understood.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the operation of my improved device is as follows; The material, not shown, to be marked is inserted in the recessed portion 5 and located above the platen 34. A downward pressure is applied to the plunger 25 and as the spring 41 is weaker than the spring 27, this spring 41 will first be com pressed allowing the elevator 6 to move downwardly. As the elevator 6 moves downwardly, the movement of the lever 42 will compel the plate 13 to move forwardly positioning the opening 12 therein in alinement with the bore 22 and the opening 23. The adjustment of a screw 38 controls downward movement of elevator 6 and forward movement of plate 13, thereby insuring exact alinement of opening 1.2 with plunger 26. At the same time this plate 13 effectually cuts ofi' or closes the lower end of the reservoir 9. A continued downward pressure of the plunger 25 will compress the spring 27 forcing the die 33 through the opening 23 of bottom plate 14 carrying with it the composition which had been located in the opening 12 and pressing this composition into the material above the platen 34. When pressure on the plunger 25 is released, the springs 41 and 27 will return the parts I to normal position.
As above stated, I employ a composition which will harden when exposed to the air or heat and which will impregnate the cloth or other material and form a monogram or other suitable identification mark to identify the material, and which will withstand the laundry operation.
When it is desired to refill the reservoir, the bolt 7 is moved into the notch 8 locking the elevator in its downward movement. The cover 17 and the plunger 15 can then be removed and the reservoir filled when said plunger and cover can be replaced and the device is ready for renewed operation.
When the die 23 is to be changed, the elevator 6 is locked in elevated position by means of bolt 7 and the plunger 25 drawn out, after screw 28 is withdrawn, when the die can be replaced.
The die is preferably made in three pieces, each containing separate characters, so that any monogram can be formed.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
