UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. GILLESPIE, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY J. TRIMBLE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLARr-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,228.
I '0 all w hom it may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs J. GILLusrm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gollar-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collar fasteners, more particularly to a substitute for the ordinary collar button used for securing the rear of the collar to the collar band of the shirt.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character stated, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which will firmly hold a collar in the secured position, which lies flatly within the collar band of the shirt and the collar permitting the ready adjustment of tie within the latter, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a neck band of a shirt having a collar fastener, in accordance with the invention, mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a front or outer elevation of the fastener.
Fig. 3 is a View on line IIIIII, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the collar fastener.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the collar fastener in accordance with the inven tion and constructed from metal or other suitable material, comprises a flat body portion 1 curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature of the human neck against which it is adapted to be used.
Formed integral with the lower edge of the body portion 1 and positioned adjacent each end thereof, is a depending clamping arm 2 having a rounded lower end 3, which latter is curved slightly inwardly, as shown at 4: in Fig. 4, of the drawing.
Centrally disposed intermediate of the clamping arms 2 and formed integrally with the lower edge of the body portion 1, is a depending collar securing element 5 comprising the narrow neck portion 6 and the enlarged fiat rounded portion 7. The neck portion 6 is slightly bent, as at 8, in a mannor to position the upper portion of the enlarged portion 7 outwardly with respect to the outer face of the body portion 1, while the enlarged portion 7 inclines inwardly toward its lower end as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The collar fastener is adapted to be mounted in the neck band of a shirt with only the enlarged portion 7, of the securing element 5, inserted through the buttonhole 9.
In securing a collar with the use of my improved fastener, the enlarged portion 7 thereof is inserted in the button-hole in the rear of the collar. The construction of the securing element 5 with respect to the clamping arms 2 is such that a clamping action is set against the materials therebetween. The inwardly curved ends of the arms 2 facilitate the insertion of the fastener within the shirt collar band.
A fastener of this construction will entirely eliminate the bulk of buttons ordinarily used for the same purpose and lies flatly within the shirt collar band and collar, and will comfortably and securely hold the collar.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A collar fastener comprising a body portion having projecting from its lower edge a pair of arms each having its free end bent inwardly toward the body portion, said arms arranged inwardly with respect to the ends of the body portion, and a collar retaining element projecting from the lower edge of and offset with respect to the body portion, said element arranged between and spaced from said arms and having the lower portion thereof extending toward the body portion;
2. A collar fastener comprising a body portion having projecting from its lower edge a pair of arms, said arms arranged inwardly with respect to the endsof the body portion, and a collar securing element pro 10 jecting from and offset with respect to the body portion, said element formed with a narrow neck at its upper terminus and hav ing its lower portion enlarged and rounded and extending inwardly toward the body portion, said element arranged between and spaced from and of greater length than the arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
THOMAS J. GILLESPIE.
