FIRE-BOX For; BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. I f t t Sept 1920 W 9 j Application filed July 10, 1917. Serial no. 179,639.
1 '0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,. CHARLES DUoAs, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fire- Boxes for Boilers, of which the following 18 a specification. D
lhis invention relates to improvements in i sectional stayed fire boxes, the primary object of which is to provide a lire-box construction in which stay bolts have a universal connection with the outer or wrapper sheet of the fire-box and also a universal connection with the inner or crown sheet thereof whereby all unequal or excessive strains due to expansion or contraction of the parts or such other strains to which the ordinary fire-box is subjected are prevented. Another object of the present improvement is to devise a stay bolt so constructed that each end thereof is universally movably mounted within supports which are carried by the inner and outer walls of the lire-box.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fire-box construction in which both the wrapper and crown sheets thereof are sectional, stay bolts being connected to 50 the joints of one shell and between the joints of the other shell.
' A still further object of the present improvement is to construct lire-box using a crown sheet composed of U-shaped sections and slotting the vertical edges of the L -shaped sections, or otherwise removing a portion of the metal therefrom, whereby the inequality of expansion and contraction of the horizontal walls relative to that of.
the vertical legs of the sheet is compensated, the inequality of expansion being due to the difference in the proximity of the horizontal walls and vertical legs of the crown sheet to the fire. This equalizing and compensating action will augment the universability of the relation between a crown sheet and. wrapper sheet which are connected by universally movable stay bolts.
2 A still further object of the present improvement is to provide fire-box construction in which the flue sheet, back head and door plate are butt welded to the mud ring,
wrapper and crown sheets permitting the boiler to be made much cheaper than those Where flanges and rivets are employed, thus Other and further objects of the present improvement will be set forth in detail in the following description and drawin s in which i v u Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sec-] tional view through one of the flexible stay bolts and showing its connection to the wrapper and crown sheets of the fire-box.
7 big. 2' is a vertica' sectional view similar to lug. 1 and taken at'right angles thereto.
Fig. 3 is atop plan view of the brackets which are applied to the joints of a sectional sheet for receiving one end of a stay bolt. f i
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 encept showing the stay belt applied to a sectional crown sheet between the joints of which a i stay sheet is interposed.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section through a fire-box in which both the crown sheet and wrapper sheet are sectional and showing the attachment of the stay bolts thereto.
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of a fire-box construction provided with my improve ments showing the same partly broken away to show the flue sheet.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of one section of the crown sheet showing the same slotted to compensate for the relative difference in the expansion and contraction of the horizontal an vertical walls thereof.
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view through a fire-box constructed in accordance with my improvements and showing in detail the welding of the flue sheet, door sheet and back head to the mud ring, crown sheet and wrapper sheet. Y
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the usual method of connecting the doorplate'and crown sheet.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the improved method of attaching the door plate to the crown sheet by butt welding.
All of the improvements hereinafter to be described in detail pertain to fireboxes of the Jacobs and Shupert type as illustrated in Patents Numbers 917,172; 982,723, and 1,054,420, which may be taken as examples.
The constructions illustrated in these patents comprise essentially a tire-box having a wrapper and crown sheet with stay bolts between them, the stay bolts bei rig mounted so and the side walls of the crown-sheet members being provided with vertical slots to permit oi expansion and contraction, and prevent distortion of such members by reason oi the unequal heating of the central and side walls of such section members, the universal connections having their universal movable joint socket-portions located in slots formed in the abutting side walls.
