Q TE TA nnvrcnFortnxrnirnr ya nnielvrnasf" 1 T 0 aZZ whom-it mayco'ncem':
Be-it known that I,HARLE Y H; LEVER- COMBE, 'a citizen of the United States of America, residing at,Detro1-t, -;1n the county of Wayne andState of'Michigan, have invented certain new "and 'useful Improve-:-
ments in Devicesfor Expanding Real'ners, 5 ofwhi'ch the following isa'-specificat1on,- reference being had therein to the, accom' panying drawings. 1 q
' In Patent No. 1,268,365, issued tome on June'd, 1918, there i's-a method illustrated of reforming reamers by locally compresslng the 'flutes or teeth separately ofa reamer that has been heated between the cutting edge and -therootof each'toot-h, whereby the cutting edges are projected out ;to the desired'diameter of the finished tool; The I invention herein relates to one preferred formofdevice for carrying outthis method accurately and rapidly,"the inventionpos rigidity with lightness, and is'arranged to clamp on the bed of a press. An anvil block 2 is longitudinally movable on the bed, so
that a post 3, thereon, on which rests a pivotally secured arm 4c, may be accurately brought into adjustment with a suitable unch 5 carried inthe head of the press on which the bed is clamped. For ease of positioning the end of the block, an adjusting screw 6 is in screw-threaded engagement with a lug 7 of the block and in rotatable engagement with the anvil block 2; a clamping stud 8 holds the block inad ustedpos tion. V
A reamer carrier is mounted on the bed 1 opposite to the anvil block 2. In preferred form this is a yoke 9 that may be adjusted back and forth in relation to the anvil block by a hand screw 10 and may be clamped in position by any suitable bolt 11. A tool support is longitudinally adjustable on the yoke in widely separated bearings 12,
I sm a 1dr Letters Patent; Application filea re mary ee, r919, 'se ial'mavassz and is held in position by -a' set'screw 14,-so as to bringv a pair of'p'ara-llel arms 15 that YHABIQFJY ERC M E ETR Ia MIGi I N Pasade a; 1525.
I the support preferably taking the form V a barl3 that is slidable'in the bearings 12-1 are keyedor otherwise 'non-rotatablyse cured to the bar 13- and] held against" longitudinal displacement by set screws-23, in
desired relation, together with center rests '16 and-17ther eon, tothe punch 5andthe anvil member 4.
Preferably the center' 17 cut away as indicated to allow free movement of the punch 5 'acr o'ssvthe-fsame, and'is-longitudi nallyadjustablef inthe' companion-"arm 15 i where it isheld' in fixed'position by ase't screw-1'8 The center -'16 is-longitudinal-ly movable I in the companion arm-15; being normally'projected by'ta spring '19 that en circles a stem QObf the'center and isi'na- 'cou-nterbored' opening of the arm-"15V inf As a result'of this construction area'merf such as indicated at 21 is "quickly mounted 5 on the centers 16and 17 andby proper ad ustment'of-the parts of the device, each rib or flute" 22" may, #be I brought successively t'o rest on the anvil member 4; while the punch 5 operates thereon in the way called for in the method application before referred to..
Because of the adjustability of the parts on the die bed, and of the tool carrier proper in the yoke, the tool may be readily adjusted for reamers of any size and length while the flutes of the reamer] may be rapidly brought lnto position, for operation by rotation of the reamer forward, the
pivoted anvil arm permitting the rotation of the reamer counterclockwise as indicated by the arrows.
Obviously, changes in the details of con- I struction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself toany particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is l. A reamer reforming device comprising a bed adapted to be secured on a press bed J i and provided with an adjustably secured anvil and with means for supporting a reamer in operative relation to the anvil so that the reamer flutes may be broughtsuccessively into operative position on the an.- vil, said means being adjustable to hold any sized reamer, and apunch arranged to 00- operate with the anvil in treatingthe flutes of a positioned reamer. s v
reamer, and a punch arranged to coiiperate with the anvil on the flutes of the reamer,
3. A reamer reforming device comprlsing a bed adapted to be secured on a press bed,
an anvil block movable adjustably, onv the bed, an anvil armpivoted on the block, an
anvil post adapted to support the outer end of the anvil arm When in operative position, a reamer supporting yoke adjustably mounted on the bed, reamer centers adju'stably mounted on the yoke and adapted to rotatably support a reamer on its centers With a flute thereof resting on the anvil arm, and a puncharranged to cooperate With the anvil arm on the flutes of the reamer.
4%. A reamer reforming device comprising a bed adapted'to be secured on a press bed, an anvil block adjustable transversely on the bed, an anvil post. on the block, an anvil arm pivoted on the anvil block to rest on the post, a yoke adjustable to and from the anvilblock, a pair ofyoke arms adjustable to and, from each other inparallel relation on the yoke, a pair of centers.
mounted in alinement on the arms, one of the centers being yieldingly projected to- Ward the other, and a punch arranged to co operate with the anvil arm in the treatment of a tooth or flute of a positioned reamer.
5. In a device for reforming reamers, and
vvherein the reamer flutes are subjected to a reamer to locate a flute thereof in treat-' ment-receivingposition relative tothe anvil.
6. A device of the, type, of claim 5, characterized in that the positioned anvil is movable in the presence of a positioned reamerlto permit a plurality of flutes of the reamer to be successively, p'lacediin position for. treatment;
7 In a reamer reforming device adapted to be operatively positioned relative to a punch, a bed adapted to bejsecured on a press bed vand provided with an adjustably secured anvil and With means for, support ing a reamer in operative relation to the anvilso that the reamer flutes may be brought successively into, operative position on the anvil relative to the punch, said means being adjustable to support any sized reamer.
In testimony WhereofI aflix my signature in the presence of two itnesses.
