AM PHomumasRAPH/cco Museonuspnacsss) UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
CHRISTIAN KOLLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' IMPROVEMENT IN EXERGI'SING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 35,347, dated January 28, 1873. v
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KoLLE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an [Improved Exercising-Machine; and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
This machine contains a swinging seat, suspended from a revolving frame, and a movable detainer is employed in connection' therewith for the purpose of swinging the seat while being carried around horizontally, and thereby giving a variety of movement and a more agreeable recreation than that derived from the ordinary roundabout In the drawing l have represented my machine or apparatus by a vertical section.
The vertical shaft a is supported by the step b at the bottom, and by a suitable frame-work or roof, c, at the top, in any ordinary or convenient manner, and this shaft is to be revolved by the crank d, belt e, and pulleys ff', or in any other convenient manner. The arms h are sustained by the suspension-rods k and, tie-rods t' c', and upon the arms h are the eyes of the sling rods Z, which rods Z suspend either a seat, m, or a wooden horse, a, with a seat or saddle upon its back. In consequence of the seat or horse being suspended by an eye at the upper end, it will swing at that point, and there will be apendulous movement to the seat as well as the movement resulting from the revolution of the apparatus; hence the rider will receive a motion more nearly resembling that of a horse, and this irregularity of movement ais still further increased by the movable detainer r that is formed with an inclined surface, again st which the horses foot, or an adjustable pendant, s, comes into contact as the machine is revolved, and detains the seat or horse momentarily, until the parts clear each other, in consequence of the arc described by the suspending-rods l; and when that takes place the seat swings forward with-an increased momentum, thereby producing a slight jerking movement similar to that of a horse in riding. The same movement is obtained by extending the rods l above the eyes and arms h, to come into contact with an inverted incline or detainer similar to the detainer r; but in that 'case the acceleration given to the seat will be in a forward direction, similar to a horse jumping a fence, and the seat will drop backward.
An imitation fence may be placed below the horses at the proper point to act with such inverted incline and forward movement.
It is preferable that the incline or detainer r should be provided with a handle, t, in slides, so that it may be drawn back out of the path of the horse or seat as it revolves.
Any desired number of horses or seats may be used, according to the size of the machine.
In consequence of driving this machine by a belt, e, from the pulley f to the pulley f f, passing over the sheaves c c, the noisy and dangerous gearing is dispensed with, and the crank d has a pawl-conuection, 5, to its shaft, so that injury will not result from the handle being moved by the momentum of the apparatus; and hence the party turning the same can arrest his movement at any time and still hold the crank, the other portions continuing to revolve.
I am aware that exercisinghorses have been suspended from a revolving frame; also that an inclined way has been provided for a toyhorse running around upon wheels; and that cams have been employed to give an irregular motion to horses that rock upon fulcrums.
I claim as my invention- The movable detainer r applied to and com b'ined with the seats, suspended by the rods l and eyes from the arms h of the revolving frame, as and for the purposes specified.
Signed by me this 29th day of May, A. D. 1872.
CHRISTIAN KOLLE.
