Description

l. W EISENHEIDER. TIME CONTROLLED LIGHTING DEVICE.
APPEICATION map SEPT. s, 1919.
' rmnmase gzl, 1920.
UNETED STATES PATENT OFFI E;
JOHN M. WEISENBEIDER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. i
TIME-COLITROLLED LIGHTING DEVICE.
Application filed September 3, 1919. Serial No. 321,397.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN M. WEISEN- REIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time- Controlled Lighting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact specification.
This invention relates to time controlled lighting devices, whereby a light may be turned on or off at a predetermined time. Such a device is especially useful for lighting a light at rising time on dark mornings, thus avoiding the necessity of stumbling around in the dark.
The invention contemplates" the use of the lighting device in connection with an' alarm clock, so that the light maybe turned on at the same time that the alarm is sound- 7 ed, whereby the light is utilized as an aid awaking the sleeper, as well as a convenience after he rises.
It is the aim of the invention to simplify the construction of the device and render it sure in operation. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accom- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of an alarm I clock of a common type with the lighting device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a left hand end elevation of the device. I
Fig. 3 is a plan view, and
Fig. 4: is a detailed view of the weight supporting loop and its connections.
A block 10f any suitable material, hav- 7 ing a step 2 on its rear face, is secured to an alarm clock 4 in any suitable manner, as by a strap 3 passed around the clock and secured to the top and bottom of the block.
The clock is equipped with the usual alarm spindle 5 carrying the winding thumb piece or handle 6, and may have the gong 7 mounted on top of the casing, as is common.
'Mounted on the step 2 of the block 1 are two spaced supports or uprights 8 and 9 carrying rotatable pulleys or wheels 10 and 11 at their upper ends. These wheels or sheaves may be on the same level, or the sheave 10 may be slightly lower than the sheave 11 to insure the proper supporting of the bar 13 when the latter is laid across them as shown in solid lines in Fig.1. Both sheaves have grooves 12 in their peripheries to retain the rod orbar 13 in place thereon. The end of said bar adjacent the clock; is bent downward, as at 14, to limit the movement of the same in one directiom that is, awayfrom the clock. A cord 15, or other suitable connection is secured at one end to the bar 13 and at the other end to the alarm spindle 5 of the clock, so thatwhen the spindle is released for sounding the alarm at the predetermined time for which the clock is set, said cord will be wound up on said spindle and withdraw the bar from one or both of the sheaves, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
When the device is set, a loop 16 is threaded on the bar 13 between the supporting sheaves 10 and 11, as shown in solid lines in Fig. 1. Said loop has an eye 17 at its upper edge to which a chain or cord 18is connected, said chain or cord extending upward for operating a valve actuating arm Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
19 in a gas pipe 20 leading to a burner 21,
or any other lighting device. On the lower edge of the loop 16 there is an eye 22 to which a chain-or cord 23 is attached for supporting a weight 24:.
When the alarm spindle is released and winds up the cord 15, thus withdrawing the bar 13 from one or both of thesupporting sheaves, the loop 16 slips off of said bar and the weight'24 descends and pulls on the lighting arm 19 controlling the burner 21, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so
' that the light may be turned on at the same time that the alarm is sounded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The combination with the alarm spindle of an alarm clock, of a pair of spaced rotatably supported wheelshaving grooved peripheries, a bar fitting loosely in the grooves in said wheels and supported thereby across the space between them, a lighting device, a
, flexible member operatively attached to said lighting device, a rigid loop carried by said flexible member, a weight attached to the loop, said loop fitting loosely on said bar between said wheels and supporting the Weight out of operative position, and means of connection between said bar and the alarm spindle of the clock, whereby said bar will be withdrawn from said wheels, the loop released from said bar and the weight It dropped for actuating the lighting device when the alarm spindle is rotated.
In testimony whereof'I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN M. WEISENREIDER.
