Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS D. HUNT, OF FAIRHAVEN, MASSAGHUSETIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN METAL-COATING TACKS, NAILS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,339, dated January 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS D. HUNT, of Fairhaven, in the county of Bristol and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coating Tacks, Nails, Screws, and other Articles with Tin, Lead, or Zinc; and do hereby declare thatthe following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in a process for coating nails, tacks, screws, and other articles with tin, lead, or zinc, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe the manner in which my process is to be carried into effect.
To coat articles by my improved method it is necessary to prepare a cylinder adapted to the work for which it is intended, said cylinder being supported upon two projecting arms, by which it can be run into a furnace and there oscillated and rotated over the fire. This cylinder should have an aperture to receive whatever is to be coated, which aperture should be securely closed while the articles are within.
The articles to be coated are prepared by acid to free them from all scale and extraneous substances, when a flux consisting of pu1-. verized resin and sal-ainmoniac is mixed with them. A'sufiicient quantity of the metal with which it is desired to coat them is added, and they are put into the cylinder, when the aperture is closed and the cylinder is run into the furnace, where it is kept in motion over the fire until the metal is melted and the articles covered. The cylinderis then withdrawn from the furnace, the cover taken off, and the articles thrown out by oscillating or rotating the cylinder, throwing out a few at each movement, allowing them to drop into water set to receive them. They are then washed, first in cold water, and then in hot water, after which they are put in sawdust to dry them. From this they are freed by sifting, when they are ready to be packed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described method of coating tacks, nails, screws, and other articles with tin, lead, or zinc in a cylinder, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of December, 1872.
