FITTING-KNIFE.
Specification of iLetters Patent. a,1 ;e nted Sept. 21 1920 Application -fi1ed January 28, 191 9. Serial No. 273,592.
To all whom it may concern; a
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J DUNKLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitting-Knives, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in pitting knives. The object of the invention is to provide an improved reciprocating pitting knife and improved means for actuating the same.
Objects relating to details of construction and operation will definitely appear Figure I is a longitudinal detail sectional view through my improved pitting knife structure, parts being shown in full lines, taken on a line corresponding to line 11 ,of Figs. IIand III.
Fig. II isan end elevation view of the structure appearing in Fig. I from toward the top end of the sheet.
Fig. III is a detail transverse sectional view on the irregular line 3-3 of Fig. I, showing details of the actuating cam structure.
' v Fig. IV ,is a detail longitudinal sectional View through a tool embodying a modifica-' tion of'my structure, taken on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. V.
Fig. V is a detail transverse sectional view taken on'line 55 of Fig. IV. In the drawings the sectional v1ews are taken looking'in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of thesection lines and similar numerals of reference refer to simi-- lar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is a handle provided with forked arms 2 in the-outer end, having a revoluble shaft 3 disposed axially in suitable bearings 4 and 5 therein. A flexible shaft COIlIlCtlOIL 6 is provided for driving this shaft 3. Shaft 3 is provided with suitable thrust collars. On the end of the shaft 3 is disposed a cylindrical cam 7, having a groove -7' therein.
- Plvoted between the arms 2 is a rocker 8;
carried on the pivot 8. A curved knife 9 in the form of a portion of a circle is carr1ed by this rocker 8 and is secured in position by suitable screwslO. A pin 11 extends up from near the pivot point of the rocker into the cam slot' 7 in the cam 7, so that when the cam rotates the arm 8 will rock on its pivot, causing the curved knife 9 to re-' .oiprocate in the path of its length. The
shaft 3 is preferably rotated at about 1800 revolutions per minute, thus giving the knife a very rapid vibration.
In Figs. IV and V, I have shown a modification of the means for rocking the rocker part and have shown the. rocker part slightly modified. The handle 12 is provided withan .axially disposed slide 13 supported in bearings in the bushings--14 and 15. The
slide is provided with collars 13, 13. I cross shaft 16 with disks 17 and wrist pin 18 is provided for engaging between the collars 13., 13', to reciprocate the slide 13. A bifurcated arm 19 carries the rocker 20, which is slotted at 21 and is connected by pivot 22 to the slide 13. The rocker 20is pivoted at 20' and carries the curved blade-23, which curved in the segment of a circle.
It is clear that rotation of the shaft 16 will cause reciprocation of the slide 13 and P cause the blade to oscillate in precisely the same manner as the blade oscillates in the structure appearing in Fig. I. The fruit is cut in halfby a splitting saw or other means preparatory to the .use of my improyed pitting knife, which removes the halved pit from the halved fruit.
From this description it is clear that the structure can be considerably modified. I
an axially disposed shaft therein, with means for, driving the same, a fork on the end of said handle, a rocker pivoted between the'arms of-said. fork, a eurved blade carried olithe said rocker andadapted to and means for oscillating the said rocker," 10 be 0scil1ated therew'ithfa cylindrical cam on cdacting "as specified. a the end ofsaid shaft, and a pin on the said In witness'whereof I have hereunto-set rocker -engaging the said cam, coacting as my hand and seal in the presence of two Wit- 5.specified. nesses. I
Y 2. In'apeach pitter, the combination of a SAMUEL J. DUN KLEY. [L. s.] suitable handle, with a bifurcated armon .Witnesses: 4 the end, a rocker pivoted between the said LUELLA G'. GREEN'FIELD,"
arms, a curved blade carried by said rocker, MARTHA J. GREGORY. I
