Application `filed. November Vi918,.Seriai-No..GOIZv To all whom t may concern.' y p I Beit known that I, GEORGE S. SoWERs, a 'at Spring Hill, in the county of johnson, ate
of Kansas, have'invented certain new 'and' useful improvements in Train-Check'lailway-Tickets, of which the lfollowing is a fullVand eXact specic'ation. f
Thepresent invention relatesto'irailway transportation tickets, and aimsto provide an improved ticket construction with a view to expediting the handling'of passengers at Vrailway stations` and aiso -preventing the loss of tickets ydue to the confusion' and crowded conditions whichv commonly prevail at railway terminals'a'nd transfer points.
' Accordingly,;one of the lobjects in view is t struction of the sectional form comprising a plurality oftransportation sections provided with a check or coupon associated with each'` section and adapted for.` use on boarding the train at'the several points wherepassage is to be taken. t. o i Iltis a further object to provide a ticket construction'whereby the station and train officials may in all lcases determinez at glance, through the" mediumof theftrain check or'coup'onl feature, the character of the `transportation with: which the holder is provided, including the route or railway and has been purchased. Y' f Y With these and various minor objectsiri view, as will hereinafter appear, the invenn ,Y n
' have illustrated (see Fig. l) lasectional rail-` tion will nowV be described by reference to the accompanying drawing, illustrating 'siiitl able forms of embodiment of the improvevdeemed tobe novel will beset forth dechecks lor coupons detached destinationan'd the class of passagel whichv j pri 'sing Figf' isa face view of a card VformV of.v 'i
transportation ticket embodying the invenf tion. Y'
it is well kknown that itgis the presentl practice ,at the more important railway sta- .c
tions and terminals and transfer points, 'i
where the passenger traffic isheaviest, to require passengers ori-boarding the trains 'to exhibit their transportation tickets, both at the 'station' gates (separating the station from the train sheds) andv again at the car steps. to entaii a considerable amountl of delay and confusion, dueV tothe `time required lby the This practice has always been found railway officials in examining the tickets, as 'i Y in producing their tickets for inspection; and the difficulty and inconvenience thusin-V curred are increased in proportion to the well as the time consumed by the passengers 'j complicated character of theditferent vaii'- eties of tickets which are` thuspresented for hurriedrinspection at a time when itisnecessary to handle the crowds 'with the greatest possible despatch; It often happens also that in themidst of such-confusion passengers will lose their tickets in trying'to'rmanip- Y' i ulate theirhand baggage andl produce their tieketsfor display'at the same time, or' may even have their tickets stolen from them in the'hurryrand disorder of thefcrowdU It is therefore my object yto provide 2V device which will not only enable the 'gate and train oiiicials to pass the ticketholders with much less confusion andwith much greater de sf without requiring such. transportation secthe train. t Y l Referring'now tothedrawing 'in detail, I
way ticket `ofthe strip ticketform, comvarious transportation u 10o 'l Sections covering several successive'passages over a designatedroute. The main bodyor contract portion of the ticket, 4,' bears matter setting forth the contract, naine of'tlfieissu-r ing railroad, class ofpassage, etc., the ticket l in the'present case being issued by the "Middle 'W est Railway and showing-,that the holder is entitled Yto iirst-class-passage from yKansas City fto San Francisco', andreturn.

51367 and entitling the holder to irstclass passage from, say,` Galveston, Tex., to Kansas City, Mo., via the Southern States railway. With'this ticket section V6 isde'tachably lconnected a train check or coupon section 8, separated from .the
train check or coupon. section 8 bears the y words Not goed for transportation,7 thus voiding its use ttor any other purposethan at i .a train check or coupon sectionS also bear-L ing indicia identifying it as a part oi? the railway ticket, namely, lthe ticket number,
Vclass of passage, the route Middle-fest and the points, Kansas City and Denver, be tween which the next succeeding transportationsection `6`is to be used, aswell as Athe matter authorizing the display of said check or coupon in lieu 'ot the remainder oi" the ticket, and the matter voiding its use for transportatiomithe same as with all the other train checks or coupons forming a part of the'ticke't. 1
When the holder of 'the ticket goes to take his train, say, from Kansas City to Denver, it will be understood that hesimply-detaches Ythe ,trainV check or coupon section 8 and places the remainderol the railway ticket in his pocketor purse; he then shows the train check 8-, inits detached form as illustrated in-Fig. 2, to the gateman in order to pass the gate to the train sheds, and again shows 1 the said train check 8 to the trainman at l i' the train. Thersameprocedure will be fol- 4lowed reference to the remaining train the car steps in order to` be admitted aboard checks or coupons 8, 8i", etc., of which the vrailwayticket may be comprised.. These checks -orcoupon's may' be surrendered at the car steps or later yto the conductor of the train, according to whatever rides may be prescribed by the issuing road. i.
1n Figi '3 the inventionis illustrated as embodied in Va card form of ticket, good for a single continuouspassage, the main body portion 12 of the ticket comprisingv the 'transportation section, to whichv the train check 1or coupon section 14 is detachably connected by means of the weakened line/16.
identifying it as a part of the ticket, namely, the ticket number f51397, the class of passage, `and the route, which, in the present in- `This train check or couponY 14 bears indicia 80 via theProgressive Railway Coffin Vaddition to which the said check or coupon bears the samematter as thoseV already described ior authorizing its use in lieu of the remainder of the ticket forV gaining admittance to the train kand voiding its use for transportation purposes. l
Itk will thus be seen that means isjprovided for avoiding the delay incident to passing through the station gates Vto the trains, as the gateinan is not obliged Vto scrutinize all the different tickets'presented for his inspection by thepassengers, nor is he obliged to stop and take such tickets from their envelops and uni-old the same Vfor the purpose of examining themor waiting until the ticket-.holders do it for him, as is freu quently now the case. The passengers are thus enabled to pass through the'gates to ythe train with a minimum loss ottime.v The same 'means protects the passengers `from the'inconvenience of handling their tickets in the confusion of the crowd, and guards against theirv losing their tickets or vhaving them mutilated orV even stolen under circumstances which are most favorable for Vthefts of thissort; .F or example, women especially,
with considerable handl baggage or with children, are very likely to get confused in fthe excitement and press of the crowd, and
may easily lose trackof their tickets and not at once notice the loss of 'them.` Againit sometimes happensthat onej party mayassist another to the train, as. a gentlemanescorting a lady, and temporarilylthrust `the past the gate and vaboard .the train, and then railroad ticket into his pocket Vuntil they are forget, atk partin to vhand the ticket over rkto the passenger. lhe'upresent device entirely eliminates the .possibilitynofv lany such oversight, since the passenger; may; placeY his i transportation laway iii-safetyV in his 'purse and use merely the train check to boardthe not ofcourse entailuthe loss of his trainsportation.
` train, the loss of whichtrain check would ,i
The train check may be `sur- ;V
; rendered to the conductoronthetrain,.prat Y the car steps on boarding the train as provided for in the wording of the train check in Fig. 3. Where surrendered to the conductor on the train, it may then be punched by the conductor and used as a hat'check or placed in a holder or the like, for that portion of the trip covered by the transportation section corresponding to that particular train check or coupon. Where the 4train checks or coupons are surrendered atthe car steps they may then be used, if desired, as a medium for obtaining a check on the transportation collected by the conductonasrwill be readily understood.
It will thus be apparent that I have provided a simple and efficient means for carrying out the' desired objects of the inven- V tion, and while I have illustrated convenient and practical forms of embodiment of the same I desire to reserve the right to make all such formal changes or modificationsas may fairly fall -withi'n the scope of the tollowing claims.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. A sectional railway ticket comprising a body portion bearing indicia rendering it good for passage, and a train checkin the form of a coupon detachablyconnected with said body portion and bearing-indiciaidentifying it as a part ofthe railway ticket and Vauthorizing the holder thereof to detach and said ticket to detach and display-said coupon in lieu of the remainder of the ticket on boarding the train. v
f3. A sectional railway ticket comprising a bodyl portion bearing indicia rendering it good for passage, and a train'check vin the form of a coupon detachably connected with said body portion and bearing indicia'identiiying it as a part of the railway ticket but voidingthe use of said coupon for pasj sage while authorizing the holder to detach and display the same in lieu'ofthe remainder of the ticket on boarding the train.
- 4f. A sectional railwayticket comprising f I i a plurality of transportation sections bear ing indicia rendering them4 good tor'passage A. .l
between given points, and a train checkin the form of a coupon 'detachably associated with each of' said, transportation Vsections and bearing indiciaidentifying it as a part l i of the railway ticket 4and authorizing the holder thereof.v to successively detach and der' of the ticket on boarding the train at the several points corresponding lto said transportation sections. y. n
5. A sectional railway ticket comprising a plurality of transportation sections bearing indicia rendering them good for passage bef i tween given points, and a plurality of train checks 'in the form of coupons detachably`A connected by said transportation sections and bearing indicia identifying said coupons as parts of the railway ticket and authorizing the holder thereof to successively detach and display said coupons in lieu of the remainder of the ticket on boarding the train at the several points corresponding. to said transportation sections.
In witness whereof -IY hereto aHX sig# y nature.
