PRIMER non ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 21 1920 Application filed. January 28, 1919. erial No. 273,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chico, county of Butte, State of (lalifornia,,have made a new and useful Invention, to wit, Improvement in Primers for Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
The present invention is an improved primer for use in connection with internal combustion motors, on farm tractors, stationary engines, automobiles, or marine engines.
. The object of the invention is to provide on internal combustion engines extraneous means of generating a combustible gas or vapor and introducing same to the explosion chamber of said engine to facilitate the starting of the engine when it is cold and necessarily difiicult to start.
A further object of the invention is to provide a primer which is simple in form and structure and which may be attached to parts conventional on the various types of engines, and which is readily detachable therefrom and may be carried in the tool box when not required in use. This invention has been found to be particularly valuable in connection with farm tractors. The
motors of such tractors are often built with two opposed horizontal cylinders and en- 'nes of this sort require considerable manual eflfort in cranking when the engine is cold in order to start them. Practice has proven that this device enables anoperator to start the engine of such tractors 1mmediately when cold without loss of time and without the attendant effort necessary to crank the engine until it starts of its own accord.
While the invention is here shown with regard to tractor engines, it is in no wise limited to such form and may be slightly modified to be used on automobile engines of the multiple cylinder type.
In the specification following and the annexed drawing the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
. In the accompanying one sheet of draw- 9 ings,
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved priming device.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section on the line IIII of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing an adaptation of my device to a four-cylinder automobile engine.
Fig. 4E is a view showing a bale detachably connected with my primer for the purpose of filling same.
. Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a hollow tube member extending vertically through my primer which is internally threaded as shown at 2 to engage the threaded end of a stop cock 3 provided with a ball check 1 seated as shown at 6 on a reduced portion of said stop cock 8 and held in place by a pin 7. The tube 1 is hollow throughout its length and closed at its lower end by a pipe plug 8 internally threaded into the lower end of said tube 1. The said tube is provided with an annular flange 9 to form a bowl for gasolene or other inflammable or gasproducing fluid 10. Surrounding the flange 9 and integral therewith is an annular wall 11 forming a chimney which extends throughout the greater portion of the length of the tube 1 from the bowl 9 upward. The wall 11 is provided with a plurality of ports 12 to admit air to facilitate the combustion of the fluid 10 when said fluid is ignited. The threaded flange of the tube 1 at the uppermost end thereof is provided with two drilled holes 13 for the purpose of engaging the points 14 of a bale having a handle 15 and finger ring 16. When it is desired to start a cold engine with my invention, the bale 15 is attached to the holes 13 and the entire device is lowered intoa gasolene tank or other receptacle, until the bowl 9 and the opening in the tube 1 are filled with fuel. As the primer is withdrawn slowly from the fuel, said fuel will drain through the ports 12 leaving the bowl 9 and tube 1 filled with fuel. The handle is then removed and the device is threaded on the lower end of the stop cock 3, the fuel in the bowl 9 is ignited which heats the external wall of the tube 1 vaporizing the fuel within said tube and causing said vapor to be conveyed by expansion through the stop cock 3 which has been opened to the combustion chamber of the engine. In order to retard the flame 5 created by the burning of the fuel within the bowl 9 and thus retard the heating of the tube 1, I have provided a helical flight 30 surrounding the external wall of the tube land integral therewith. The flight 30 makes the heating of the tube slower and also tends to retain the heat in the tube 1 generated by the flame 5 until the fuel within the tube 1 is entirely vaporized.
In Fig. 3 I have shown my primer installed on a four cylinder automobile engine being attached thereto by standard pipe fittings as follows: The primer as heretofore described instead of being attached to one cylinder is threaded on a nipple 21 leading to a cross or 4-way fitting 22. The vertical member of the cross is supplied with a drain cook or filling cup 23, while the horizontal members of said cross are connected with pipes 2e provided with Ts 26 and elbows 27 leading to the respective cylinders of the engines. The pipes are connected with the stop cocks 28 by unions in accordance with well known practice.
In this adaptation of my invention, the fuel in the bowl 9 is ignited in the manner hereinbefore described and the valves in the stop cocks of the respective cylinders are open and the vapor admitted into one or more cylinders as desired, whereupon the engine is ready to crank. It will be understood that this operation is entirely independent of the operation of the intake and the exhaust valves of the engine and the fuel generated in my primer may be injected into any one'or any number of the cylinders of the engine as desired.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A primer for internal combustion engines comprising a tube closed at one end and provided at the opposite end with means for removable engagement with a valve or pipe connection; a bowl surrounding the said closed end of said tube; both tube and bowl adapted to contain liquid fuel.
2. A primer for internal combustion engines comprising a tube closed at one end and provided at the opposite end with means for removable engagement with a valve or pipe connection; a bowl surrounding the said closed end of said tube; both tube and bowl adapted to contain liquid fuel; and a chimney surrounding said bowl provided with draft ports.
3. A primer for internal combustion engines comprising a tube closed at one end and threaded on the opposite end for pipe or valve connection; a fuel bowl surrounding said closed end of said tube; a chimney surrounding both'tube and bowl; and a helical flight surrounding said tube and integral therewith, inside the said chimney.
4. A primer for internal combustion engines comprising a tube closed at one end and threaded on the opposite end for pipe or valve connection; a fuel bowl surrounding said closed end of said tube; a chimney surrounding both tube and bowl; and a helical flight surrounding said tube and integral therewith, inside the said chimney; counter sunk holes in the external surface of the wall of the threaded end of said tube adapted to removably engage a bale.
5. A primer for internal combustionengine, comprising a tube and an integral bowl, partially surrounding said tube, both adapted to contain a liquid fuel; a helical flight integral with said tube and means on the opposite end of said tube for removably engaging with the inlet manifold of an internal combustion engine.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 24th day of September, 1919.
- WALTER WV. BROWN.
