' I AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent: Patented Sept. 21,
Application filed il'une 14, 1919. Serial No. 304,116. I
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FLETCHER O. Bos- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in automobile locks, and has for its object to so construct the casing of such a lock that when said casing is secured to the attaching head, unauthorized access cannot be had to the securing means.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the casing of such a look as to cause it to retain the bottom plate thereof in position by a portion of said plate fitting into suitable grooves.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a depending flange formed with the casing having a groove therein for engagement with a portion of the attaching head.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of an automobile lock made in accordance with my present improvement, showing the lock attached to a hub carried by the steering gear casing of an automobile.
Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view of the lock casing, with all of the removable parts removed therefrom.
Fig. 3, is a section at the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 4, is a central longitudinal section of the lock casing.
Fig. 5, is a perspective of the lower portion of the casing.
Fig. 6, is an end view of the outer end portion of Fig. 5.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 represents the attaching head which has formed therewith the upperportion of the lock casing; and 3 is'the lower portion of the lock casing which has formed therein the dove tailed groove 4: which is adapted to slide over the dove tailed flange 5 formed upon the bottom of the upper portion of the casing, and when these two portions of the lock casing are thus united .the forward end of the lower portion 3 com pletes the head 1, and in this completed head is formed the threaded recess Gfor screwing upon the hub 7 which latter projects from the attaching member 8 formed with or brazed to the steering post casing 9 which surrounds the steering post 10 the latter having a keeper recess 11 formed therein for the reception of the lock bolt 12.
The lower portion 3 of the lock casing also has formed therein, a recess 13 for passing over the plate 14 which is intendedto close 7 the bottom of the lock casing and retain the mechanism therein.
From this description it will be seen that the lock is readily assembled without the use of screws, and when the upper and lower portions thereof have been united by means of the dove tailed groove all of the parts will be secured in place, and when the head is threaded upon the hub 7 access cannot be had to the interior of the look when the bolt 12 is shot into the keeper recess 11. Not only will the steering post be locked against action, but the lock cannot be removed from the hub until this bolt has been retracted by unlocking the lock, on account of the square portion of the bolt fitting in the squared opening 15 in the lock casing; thus the entire device is assembled and secured against unauthorized manipulation without the use of screws. I
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described, my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In an automobile lock, an attaching member permanently carried by the steering gear casing, a threaded hub formed upon said attaching member, a lock casing composed of an upper and lower section, dove tailed together, and the two members of said casing having a threaded recess therein for engagement with the threaded hub whereby all of the parts are secured together.
2'. In combination with the casing of the steering post of an automobile, an attaching member formed with said casing, and hav ing a passage therethrough for the passage of the bolt of the look, a threaded hub formed upon the attaching member, a two part lock casing said parts being dove tailed together and having a threaded recess therein for engagement with the threaded hub.
3. An automobile lock comprising in combination, an attaching member provided with a threaded hub, a lock casing section having a dove tailed flange and a semi-circular interiorly threaded recess, and another ooacting lock casing sectionhaving a dove tailed groove cooperating with the dove tailed flange and provided with a semicircular interiorly threaded recess, said recesses coacting to provide a threaded socket for registration with the hub on the attaching memberas shown.
In testimony whereof, I have fixed my signature.
