Be it known that I, RAPHAEL Es'rUno,'a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella, of which'the following is a full, clear, and exact description. c
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in umbrellas, and it pertains more particularly to the handle respect to each other, to form a channel '10.
4.0 7 umbrella staff, and secured to one end therefriction to a minimum.
structure thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an umbrella in which the top'is capable of rotary movement relative to the handle.
A further object of the inventionv is to provide an umbrella in whichthe handle may be removed.
With the above and other objects in view, 1
reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional plan view 7 taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates an umbrella handle, and said handle is provided with a socket 6, in which is suitably secured a tubular member 7. The tubular member 7 projects beyond thehandle, and
i said projecting portion is provided with two annular flanges 8 and 9, spaced with The reference character 11 designates the of is a tubular member 12. This tubular member 12 is provided with a closed curved end 13, which is adapted to engage the bottom wall of the tubular member 7 thev curved end being provided to reduce the The outer end of the tubular member 12 is provided about its. diameter, at equidistantly spaced points, with lugs or ears 14, and said lugs or ears 14 are adapted to be bent around the outer flange 9 into the space between the flanges 8 and9, as indicated by the reference character 15 in Fig. 1.
By this construction it will be seen that the staff 11 and its tubular member 12 are .lpplication filed September 18, 1919. Serial No. 324,457.
i speifiafiniifmm e a nted Sept. :14, 19 20 freely rotatable withrespeot to the handle. =5,the-tubular member 12 rotating within -thetubular member 6, andthe lugs 14 sew-j ing to hold the several parts in the positions shown. 7
, 111' the form of the invention illustrated in F 1g. 2, the reference character 20 designates a tubular member, which is placed within a socket 21, in the handle 22. I This tubular member 20 is provided eXteriorly withop positely-disposed resilient members 28, the
a'ourved seat 24. The reference character 25 designates a tubular memberfwhih is outer end of each of which is provided with rigidly securedto the staff 26, and the inner acter 27 Surrounding the staff 26 in such a manner that it engages the free outer end of the tu-' bular member25, is a coil wire 28, the outer closed end of this tubular member 25: is f curved as indicated by the reference char- 7 v face of which engages the curved seat 24 of the resilient members 23, as indicated in Fig;
2. By this construction, it willebe apparent thatsolong as the wire is engaged with the staff 26, by reasonof the engagement of the outer end of the tubular member 25 with the coil of said wire, the withdrawal of the'staff 26 is prevented.
For the purpose, of removing the staff, the freeends of the wire 28 are 'crossed,,as in dicated by the reference character 30, andeach end is provided with an operating knob 31. From this it will be seenth'at as the knobs are forced together, the coil 28 is expanded to such a position as to permit of the free passage of the tubular member 25 in order that the staff with said tubular member 25, may be withdrawn from the handle socket. V From theforegoing description, it will be seen that in both forms of the invention,the staff in addition to being removable, is free to rotate in the handle, thusrelieving the umbrella of shocks owing to contact with various obstacles when in the raised posiy tion.
I claim 1. In an umbrella, a handle provided with.
a socket, a stafl'adapted to be received within said socket and} rotatably mountedflwithrespect thereto, and resilient means carried by said socketand ,embracing said staff for H Y retaining the staff within the socket.
2. In an umbrella, a handle provided with j a socket, a staff, a sleevemembercarried by a the staff and adapted to be received Within the socket, and resilient means carried by the socket and adapted to engage the free socket;
3. In an nmbrella, a handle provided with a socket, a stafl, 'a sleeve member carried by said staff and immovably secured thereto, and 2t resilient member carried by the socket and engaging the stafi andthe free edge of the sleeve carried thereby to retain said staff Within the socket.
