The desk with the doors 2, 3, for compartmentstherein, as well as drawers 4:, 5, for additional cabinet compartments.- The drawer 5 is provided with the opening grips or handles 6, which in heavier work may be the real .bolt actuating means for retraction in openingthe drawer. These'compartments pro vide mountings for combination locks in accordance with the invention herein, including an index member 7: provided with a knurled knob or head8. After the bolt of the lock has been'released, the compartment or drawer may be opened by a pull on the knob 8. Asthe knob v8 moves outward in Specification of Letters'-- Patent.

The member or mounting plate 11 is provided with a slot-26 (Fig.
2) in which a rectangular'stem of a d o g 27 provided with aprotruding head -28 is mounted. With the bolt 20 retractedpsay upon pushing inward by hand, the dog- 27 1 may be moved to engage the upper pro jection 19 of the bolt. Thus the dogfl? is rendered inactive. However, in-l'arger work the dog 27 may be operated by one on the inside or". the compartmentto coact, with a disk or tumbler 29 out of operative engage ment with the sleeve 14 of the, mounting plate 11. This dish 29 has its bearing about the outside of the sleeve 12. This tumbler 29 has a seat or notch 30which inrthe rotation of the tumbler 29 may be brought into such registryxwith the opening 22 in the Sleeve 14 that the bolt may be retracted thereinto; On the forward-side thereof, the tumbler 29 carries the projections 31, 32, spaced from each other peripherally and 'lorated as may be expedient in determining combination relations for the lock.
' Spaced by the loose washer 33 from-the tumbler 29 is the tumbler 34 having the seat or notch 35 analogous to the notch of the tumbler 29, for when alined with the notch 30 and opening 22, this notch permits retraction of the bolt 20, as shown by the-position of the members in Fig. 5. This second or forward tumbler 34 has centrally projecting from its forward side the cylindrical portion 36, adjacent thereto the angular keying' seat 37 and the externally threaded terminus 38. From its opposite or rearward side this forward tumbler 34 has adjacent its periphery the rearwardly extending projection 39 rotatable to intercept the projections 31, 32 of therear tumbler 29 in operating the combination lock. The angularposition of the projection 39 as to the notch 35 is a'matter of selection in worlzing out the desired series of combinations. For changing-or giving the lock 'a different combination, the index member 7 as well as the scale member 9 may be shifted angularly.
A friction disk or fiber washer 42 is mounted on the cylindrical portion 36 of the tumbler 34 for clamping between the tumbler 34 and the index member 7. This clamping is yieldable. The ring 41 through its shoulder40 ten'ds through engagement with the seat 37 to preclude angular rotation of the 7 ring 41 as to the tumbler 34. Nut 43-run inserted coaxial therewith to shield the conup on threaded terminus 38 brings into action the washer 42 for a holding action sulficient for normallock operations. This nut 43 is then locked by the similar nut 44, each being operated to positionby a two prong wrench engaging the seats 45 diametrically disposed.
The index member 7 is assembled on the front tumbler 34. The spindle 46 may be necting means between the tumbler and indicator and extend through .the washer 33 and sleeve 12, for detachable and relatively rotatable mounting by the nut 47 concentricallyof the rotative elements of the look as well as concentrically of the sleeves 12, 14,
and scale member 9.
