ARTHUR EDWARD, 'WIEDENHOEFT, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS V LIGHTING-FIXTURE.-
7 My invention relates to means for sup porting electric light shades, bowls, reflec-- tors and the like on cords, chains or other supports suspended from ace'ilingorother overhead structure. The object of the invention is to provide a more convenient, more quickly operable and generally more serviceable supporting means than those in use, and the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, of a shade and reflector embodying my invention in its supporting means.
Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly broken away, of the radial arms and their center plate, which support the hooks upon which the shade is hung.
In the several views 2 represents in simple form a reflector or shade, which may be of any of the usual ornamental designs, the essential feature in connection with such a shade so far as the present invention is concerned, being the usual flange 3 to be engaged by the supporting or gripping means which are the subject of this invention. This flange is engaged by a series of usually three hooks, which in the present improvement are hooks 4, 5 and 6. These hooks are commonly held in engagement against the 7 outside of the shade or bowl by set screws and the like projecting from a part of the hook in each instance against'the inner side of the bowl positioned substantially like arms 7 8 and 9, which, together with said hooks, are integral portions of preferably cast brackets 10, 11 and 12 of any desired ornamental design. The individual set screws, and like devices referred to, are in the present improvement dispensed with and the hooks 4, 5 and 6 which are secured in any suitable manner to a series of spring rods 13, 14 and 15, in each of which is I Specification of Letters l atent. Patntd 14, 1920,
1919. Serial No. 307,700Q
. formed a double loop, circle or a spring vcoil 16 adapted to serve as a normally immovable axis of rotation for the outer end of the rod relative to the inner-portion thereof, These arms 13,114, and 15 are removably and adjustably as as to their'projection attached to a center disk or plate 17 which ispreferably provided with a central hole 18 through which electric wires supporting a lamp in the middle of the bowlmay be passed. f On the plate 17 are struck-out spring lugs 19, 20 and21 and in radial line with each is a "suitable number of perforations 22 and 28 to be engaged by a hook on the inner end of each rod. This hook is indicated by the numeral 24 and it is formed by bending the inner end of the rod twice at right angles to provide a vertical portion passing through the hole in the plate and a horizontal portion engaging the under side of the plate, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. After these hooks have been inserted in their respective openings the rods are swung under the lips or spring lugs 19, 20 and 21 which hold the rods against accidental movement either in the plane of the plate 17 or angularly relative thereto.
The loops or coils 16 are engaged by the usual chains 25 or cords which are'attached to and diverge from a hook or eye attached to the ceiling of a room (notshown). On the arms 7, 8 and 9 are preferably attached, in any suitable manner, lamp sockets 26 on which electric light bulbs or other lamps may be mounted. To release the shade 2 from the hooks one of the latter with its bracket is bent upward on the axis 16 past the flange 3, which frees the remaining hooks. The support of the hooks 4, 5 and 6 by-the radial rods 13, 14 and 15 obviates the bending strain at each individual hook imposed by individual set screw attachments which tend to break off a weak rim at the hook. The hooks always being held in proper relative relation by the connecting rods make the mounting of the supporting bracket convenient and instantaneous since it involves merely the flexing or turning of one hook to enable it to pass the rim or flange 3 and its self adjustment when placed, instead .of requiring the manipulation of three places of attachment, and the radial rods after being once adjusted with reference to the center plate insure uniform and proper engagement with the bowl or shade and the saving of cost due to the breakage provement makes for convenience in shipments and renewals or replacements.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a central apertured plate, of radial rods adjustable into either one of several positionson said plate, a shade-engaging hook mounted upon each rod, and a coiled spring loop formed in each rod with which the means for supporting said rods in suspension are engaged.
2. The'combination with a central supporting plate, of arms'each having a 'hook at each'end to be engaged, respectively, with parts upon said plate and with a lamp-shade flange, hook-engaging means upon said plate :which "permit longitudinal shifting V of positions of said arms, and means engaged with intermediate portions of said arms for supporting same in suspension.
' 3. The combination with an apertured plate, of rods radiating from and having adjustable'connections with said plate to vary the distances between the convergent ends of said rods, hooks upon the opposite ends of said rods, and spring loops between the ends ofthe respective rods from which said rods'are suspended 4. The combination with a plate having perforations therein, of rods having hooks which engage said perforations and are variably adjustable therein, spring-clips which hold said rods in fixed. radialrelation and the plate which serves as a resisting axis of rotation for each hook. V c r In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name. v I V ARTHUR EDWARD VWIEDENHOEFT.
'to each other, a hook on-each-rod, and a 7 spring coil in each rod between the hook
