Extension-Tables.
No. 135,274. I Pat'emedjamzmals.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATHIAS HOFMANN, OF DARLINGTON, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION TABLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS HOFMANN, of Darlington, in the county of La Fayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Extension Table, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved extension table, showing it extended. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, showing it contracted. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the saine on the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. f
This invention relates to a new construction of extension table with the object of simplifying the same, reducing the expense, and facilitating the enlargement or contraction of the table.
A in the drawing represents the table-top, connected by toggle-joints B B with the, ex-
. tension frames C C that constitute the table frame. Legs D D, insuitable number, support the table-frame at the proper height. Each of the two frames C G supports, near its outer end, a plate, F, which, when the table is contracted, as in Fig. 2, is directly under the top A. When, however, the two frames O G are drawn apart, as in Fig. 1, the top A drops between the two plates FF, and on a level with them, so that then these plates form extensions of the table-top. In order to contract the extended table the top A must first be raised to enable the plates F to pass under it. The toggle -joints B B are hinged to lugs that are fastened to the under side of the table-top A, and also hinged to lugs that are fastened to the under sides of the plates F, so that thus the top A is properly connected with the frames C C, as the plates F F are securely fastened to the said frames, respectively. The side rails a a of the extension frames G may be connected by dovetail ribs and grooves, a-s on the left-hand side of Fig. 3, or may be slotted and connected by buttons b passing through their slots, or otherwise connected to be extensible and contractible. G Gr are jointed leaves hinged to the ends of the plates F. They are swung into horizontal position for use when the table is extended, as in Fig. 1, and are supported in such position b y sliding or hinged brackets H H that are applied to the ends otl the frames C C.
W'hen the table is contracted the leaves may be doubled, being jointed for that purpose, so that their outer sections d d are placed horizontally against the ends of the top A to furnish short extensions thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The vertically-adjustable table-top A connected by toggle-levers B B with the extension frames O C, and combined with the extension and supporting plates F F, as specitied.
2. The combination of the tablet0p A, jointed toggles B B, the plates F F, and the jointed leaves G G having extensions d d, as and for the purpose described.
MATHIAS HOFMANN.
