Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
' Application filed ma 1, 191a Serial No. 94,557.
To all whom it may concern.
Iii
Be it known that we, Gnonon NVIBARNES and DON CARLos TRAVIS, cit zens of the Kenosha', county of Kenosha, and S a e 01' Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Constructions, of which the following is a specification. I
fl 'his'iiivention relates to improvements the connecting members above referred tocan beeconomically made and are readily secured in place and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a spring construction embodying our invention. I
Fig. 2is a sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 1. I v
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the construction of the centrally disposed cross springs and wires.
We are aware that cross connecting straps or wires extending through the central part; of helical springs are not broadly new, also that it is not broadly new to use tie plates or tie members for securing the upper ends of such coils together. However, as far as we are aware no one has devised any construction such as that shown in the drawings, and hereinafter more particularly described and which embodies the advantages of the present invention. In devices of this character the margin of profit is small and differences in details of construction which add even slightly to the economy of constructionand to easiness of assembling are frequently vitally important to the manufacturer.
In the particular embodiment of the preaent invention We have shown a bed construction comprising a plurality of helicalcoil lower marginal frames 2 and 3 respectively.
. T he central parts of the helical springs are United States, and residents of the city of tied together by means of a plurality of cross connecting members or straps 4 and longitudinally extending wires 5. The particiilar manner in which the straps and Wires are formed and interlocked with the helical 4 is provided witha plurality of offset porsprings l secured between the upper and.
"springs, forms one of the salient featuresof' "the present invention. Eachof these straps tions' 6. Each offset portion is of a width substantially equal to the inside diameter of the central part of the helical spring and consists ,of a pair of right angle shoulder portions 7 and a centrally disposed groove portion 8. Each wire 5 is also provided with a plurality of offset portions 9, each being of substantially the width of the inside diameter of the central coils of the helicals. Each offset portion 9 comprises a pair of right angle shoulders 10 and a second offset portion 11 formed by the right angle shoulders 12. The offset portions 11 are of the same width as the straps 4 and are adapted to fit in grooves 8 of the latter. WVhen the straps 4 and wires 5 are assembled in position as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, the straps 4 and shoulder 10 of the wires'5 abut closely against the inner sides of the coils of the helicals, at the same time the offthe groove 8 and shoulder portion 12 of the offset portion 11 fits against the sides of the straps 4. The arrangementis such that not only are the helical springs themselves effectively locked against lateral displacement but the wires and straps are also so interlooked as to effectively prevent any displacement, irrespective of the springs.
It has been found in practice that this makes a simple and yet most effective lock and obviates the necessity of cutting or otherwise mutiliating either the Wires or the straps,
The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1 In a spring construction, the combination with upper and lower marginal frame members, having coil springs interposed therebetween, of a series of flat cross-conset portion 11 of the wire fits snugly within 4 necting members extending through the coils an offset portion of substantially less width than the coil, vertically extending shoulders connecting the offset portions to the main body of said orossconnecting member, said vertically extending shoulders fitting closely against the adjacent sides of the coil, a depressed portion formed in the central part of each oiiset portion and asecond series of crossconnecting members each having a plurality of Vertically extending shoulder portions fitting closely against the adjacent sides of the corresponoing coils and second shoulder portions fitting against the adja' cent sides of the oitset portion of the Hat strap members, said last mentioned shoulders having a connection fitting Within said depressed portion.
2. In a spring construction the combination with opposed frame members having coil springs interposed therebetween, of a series of cross connecting members extending through the coils of the said springs and each provided with an offset portion, vertically extending portions connecting the offset portion to the main body of the cross connecting link or member and fitting Within the adjacent sides of the coil and a second series of cross connecting members each having a plurality of Vertically extending shoulder portions fitting Within the adjacent sides of the corresponding coils and means intermediate oi' the vertically extending portions of the first mentioned series of cross connecting members detachably interlocked with means intermediate of the shoulder portions of the second mentioned series of cross connecting members by the tension of the adjoining coils of the spring between which the members are interposed.
