Description

AXEL UNO SARNMARK, OF GOTTENBORG, SWEDEN.
THERMOSTATIC cur-err.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1320.
Application filed April 3, 1919. Serial No. 287,381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Axnn UNo SSRNMARK, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Nordenskioldsgatan 20, Gottenborg, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Thermostatic Cut-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
he present invention relates to thermostatic cut offs for gas burners, the primary object of the invention being the construction of a cut off that will be applicableto a burner equipped with an economizer, 2'. c. a small burner which can maintain the tem perature of boiler or the like previously heated by the main burner.
With this and other objects in view my invention will be more fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drzuving Figure 1 is a )lan view of my thermostatic cut oil shown in connection with a portion of a burner or stove, parts of the device being broken away and other parts thereof shown in section;
Fig 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
1 is a thermostat herein shown as a thin metallic pigs, pivotally connected to a lever 2 which turns about an axis shown above the thermostat in Fig. 1. vided with a spring 3, that presses upon a rod 22 arranged to slide within a suitable pipe 20 herein constituting a part of the valve housing 1. stand of a conventional gas stove 5 by means of a nut 6, said nut serving as an injector for the admixture of air to the main burner, not shown. In the housing i is arranged a spring closed cook or valve 7 provided with two parallel apertures 8 and 9, a spring spindle 10, a ratchet disk 11, a handle 12 and nuts 13. Arranged within said housing is a regulating valve or cook 1a for the economizer burner, said regulating valve having a handle 15, an aperture 16, an opening 17 for the economizer burner, and two nuts 18 for securing the valve spindle or cook 14 within the housing.
The housing for the main valve is at its upper part formed as a spring-casing 19 and includes a guiding tube 20 previously referred to. The rod 22 has a pin 23 adapted to cooperate with the ratchet disk 11 in preventing movement of the valve 7, herein in maintaining said valve open, said. rod 22 The lever 2 is pro-' The housing 1 is fixed to the being connected with the spring 3 by a crew 24-. o c
A gas pipe 25 herein constituting a part of the economizer passes from the housing 4: to the cconomizer burner or burners, as the case may be, vhich burners are so placed as to transmit heat to the thermostat and thus effect the functioning thereof.
The general operation of the cut oil is as follows:
The regulating cook or valve 1 1 is turned to its fully opened position, as shown in the drawing, by means of'the iandle lo; the valve 7 by means of the handle 12 is next turned in a direction opposed to the action of the spring 35 to its fully opened position and thereby allows gas to flow from the supply pipethrough the various apertures of the valves 7 and 1 1 and the communicating passages of the housing 1 to the burner. After being lighted the valve 7 may for a few seconds be kept open byany well known means, not shown, until the thermostatic apparatus functions to effect the engagement of the pin 23 with the groove 34 in the disk 11.
Under the influence of the spring 35 the valve 7 tends to close but is prevented from so doing by said pin 23 which has i been brought so far forward by expansion of the tube 1 that it has entered the groove 34: and is holding the petcock in the desired position. The position of the pin 23 in relation to the ratchet disk 11 can be adjusted and regulated by an adjusting screw 36 interposed between the spring 3 and a depending portion of the lever 2.
By means of the regulating and economizer cook 14 which according to this invention is combined with the automatic cook or valve 7, the flame can be regulated to any heightand moreover the gas can be directed to the economizer only, that is the main burner can be extinguished and only as much gas be allowed to burn in the economizer as may be required to maintain a certain temperature thereby effecting great economy of gas. In order to effect the functioning of the economizer the cock 14 is turned another quarter of a turn from that shown so as to close the aperture 16 in the direction of the cock 7 but to open said aperture toward the supplv of The portion now turned to we rd the gas supply pipe is grooved. or pro vided with an aperture as at 16 running from the gas supply pipe toward the center of the valve. The gas is thus cut off from access to the main burner, but through the regulating cock, can continue its passage through the passages 17 to the aperture 9 and thus to the pipe 25. The pipe 25, as previously mentioned, leads to and constitutes herein a part of the economizer burner which may be of any desired number, one at least of which will be so placed that it can keep the thermostatic tube warm. If when using the main burnervor the economizer, the flame is extinguished the thermostat 1 will cool and contract, drawing with it the rod 22 so that the pin 23 will be withdrawn "from the notch 34 of the disk 11 and thereby release the cock 7 which will close automatically by reason of the pressure exerted thereon by the spring 35.
Having thus disclosed one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims:
1. In a thermostatic cut oil for gas burners, the combination of a main burner, a thermostat, an economizer arranged for giving the thermostat sufiicient heat when the main burner is not in use, a pet cock having passages for supplying gas respectively to said main burner and said economizer and adapted to be set to supply gas to one or both of said burners, a second pet cock also having passages for supplying gas respectively to said main burner and said economizer, and means including said thermostat automatically to effect the closing of said passages.
2. In a thermostatic out ofi for gas burners and the like, the combination of a ther most-at, an economizer, and a thermostatically controlled valve, said valve being inserted between the economizer and the economizer cock or valve.
3. In a thermostatic cut off for gas burners and the like, the combination of a thermostat, an economizer, and a thermostatically controlled valve having passages respectively adapted to serve as a regulating valve and as an economizer valve.
} In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AXEL UNO 'SiIRNMARK.
