Be it known that I, Lo'rHAR R. ZIFFERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved receptacle for garbage, refuse, waste, etc., of the general kind shown and described in my Patnt No. 1,247,058, issued November 20, 191

Primarily my invention is concerned with means by which the cover of the receptacle may be raised and lowered. The cover operating means which will be presently de. scribed is formed separately and distinctly from the receptacle itself which may be loosely positioned within the frame carrying the cover operating means. When operatively placed in position, the receptacle cannot be removed from the frame without first raising the cover. As the only way in which the cover may -be raised is by actuation of the cover operating means, it will ordinarily be impossible for animals to gain access to the interior of the receptacle. The means by which my invention attains the general objects just stated are clearly set forth in the accompanying specification wherein reference is made to the drawingsin which Figure 1 exhibits a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention, the dotted lines representing the parts asmoved to bring the cover to raised position.;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame, the receptacle and cover being removed to better exhibit the construction and arrangement of the parts.

The mechanism constituting thepresent invention may be conveniently formed of some such material as malleable iron arranged to provide a substantial and serviceable structure. As best shown in Fig. 1, this structure includes a circular base 4 mounted upon suitable legs 5, intersecting braces 6 being extended across the base below its upper edge- By this construction a circular frame is provided in which a cylindrical receptacle 7 may be placed and held in operative position.

Depending from the intersection of the cross braces 6 are one or more lugs 8, carryinga pin 9 adapted to' afford a pivotal best shown in Fig. 1. A stop member 13k carried on the treadle and arranged to en- Y gage with the under side of one of the braces 6 serves to limit the swinging m0vement of the treadle in one direction.

Secured upon the rear side of the base is an upright member14 formed with Webs l5 suitably curved in conformity with the periphery of the base 4 and secured thereto by rivets 16 or any other suitable connection. li/ eans for correctly positioning the upright member upon the base are provided in the shape of ears 17 which project inwardly from themember to lie upon the upper edge of the base 4. The lower end of the upright member is formed to present companion lugs 18 which depend below the base 4, ya pin 19 being extended between these lugs to afford a pivotal mounting for a bell crank 20. in Fig. 2, with companion sides between which is extended a pin 21 at the inner end and a pin 22 at the other end. The pin`21k at 25 with a lever 26 which is pivoted to the extremity of the upright member 14 as at 27. As best appears in Fig. 2, the upper end of the upright is forked to provide a substantial mounting for the lever 26, the end of the leverwherein the pin 25 is situated being disposed rearwardly of the upright, and the forward end 28 of the lever 26 being extended over the base ofthe frame to a point where it may engage with the receptacle cover 29. A convenient means for detachably connecting the lever 26 to the fcoveris suggested, comprising a button 30 secured to the cover and arranged to present its shank within a slot 31 formed in the tion when read in connection with the several igures of the drawings. It is of special importance to note that normally the upper end oi the bell crank is in substantial alinement with the link QsL-that is, the pin 22 lies in dead center relation between the pivotal points 19 and 25, so as to prevent raising of the cover except by operating the treadle. lVhen, however, pressure is applied to the pedal of the treadle, the bell rank 2O will be swung upon its pivot 19 until the parts are brought into the position indicated by the dotted lines in F ig. l. When the cover is thus raised, the receptacle 7 may be removed from the frame by means of the bail 32, or in any other way that is preferred. To replace the receptacle in op erative position it is necessary merely that the cover should be raised whereupon the receptacle maybe tted back into the base of the trame, its rotative position relative thereto being a matter of no importance. After the cover has been allowed to drop back in place (this action being facilitated by the pressure of the spring l2), the device as a whole may be moved about by seizing the bail, or in any other convenient manner, it being obvious that when so handled the cover will remain seated to prevent tlie receptacle troni leaving the trame. i ln the construction illustrated, l have shown the parts to be formed in a substan tial manner such as wouldbe preferred if the device were made of cast metal. Such details, however, are not essential to the invention, which relates primarily to the cover operating means which is formed independently of the receptacle, and which is incapable of operation except by applying pressure to the treadle in the manner intended.

A frame providing a mounting tor a receptacle and carrying means for raising the receptacle cover including a treadle, a lever pivoted to the frame and having connection with the receptacle cover, a bell crank pivoted to the frame and having connection with the treadle, and link pivot-ally connected to the lever and to the bell crank, three of the pivotal centers beingnormally arranged in substantial alinement whereby motion may be transmitted only from the direction ofthe treadle, substantially as described.

A frame providing a mounting for a receptacle and carrying means for raising the receptacle cover including a treadle, and interconnecting elements adapted tor simultaneous operation when the treadle is actuated, one of said elements having connection with the receptacle cover and adapted to raise the same when the treadle is actuated, the several relements being normally in such relation as to prevent their transmitting motion except from the direction or' the treadle, substantially as described.

A frame providing a mounting for a receptacle and carrying means for raising the receptacle cover including a treadle pivoted to the frame, a lever pivoted to the frame and connected Vith the receptacle cover, and interconnected elements between vthe treadle and lever adapted for simultaneous operation to transmit motion from the treadle to the cover, the normal position et the elements relative to each other being such as to prevent their operation except when motion is first imparted by the treadle, substantially as described.

5. Av trame providing a mounting for a receptacle and carrying means for raising the receptacle cover including a treadle, and elements interconnecting the treadle and cover adapted for simultaneous operation, the said elements being so related as to resist in and of themselves any operative movement except when the treadle is first actuated, substantially as described.
