GLOYDE B. ULERY, OF GARRETT, INDIANA.
MAIL-BOX SIGNAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 191 5.
Application filed April 16, 1914. Serial No. 832,300.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLOYDE B. ULERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrett, in the county of Dekalb and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Box Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signals, and more particularly to devices for use in connection with rural mail boxes for indicating whether or not the box contains mail.
An object of the invention is to provide an operating means for the signal adapted to be actuated by the wheel of a vehicle passing thereover.
An other object is to provide manually operable means for returning the signal to normal position.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described and claimed, and in which,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the signal, and, Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a suitable base supporting a vertically disposed standard or upright 6. A signaling arm 7 is pivotally mounted at 8 adjacent the upper end of the standard 6 and is adapted to be manually operated by a lever 9 pivoted centrally of the standard 6 and having a handle 10 formed at one end. The arm 7 and lever 9 are connected by the rod or link 11 in such manner that when the handle 10 of the lever is depressed the signal arm 7 is moved to raised position.
A pair of bearing members 12 are secured to the base 5 and rotatably support a wheel engaging member 13 having its medial portion offset to provide a crank, and having its free end adjacent the standard 6 formed to provide a crank arm 14. A second lever 15 is pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis in the standard 6 below the lever 9 and is connected with the latter by a link 16. The
opposite end of the lever 15 is connected with the crank arm 14: by a link 17.
The member 13 is adapted to be engaged and depressed by the foot or the wheel of the carriage of the mail carrier, rotating said member in its bearings 12 and rocking the crank arm 14;. The adjacent end of the lever 15 is carried downwardly, raising the opposite end of the latter together with the signal 7 through the links 11 and 16, and the lever 9 thus indicating that mail matter has been deposited in the mail box (not shown). After the mail is collected by the owner, the handle 10 is operated to throw the signaling arm 7 to its lower or normal position.
A spring 20 is preferably disposed between the inner end of the lower lever 15 and a post 21 carried by the standard 6 for overcoming the weight of the signal arm 7 and retaining it in horizontal position after an operation of the member 13. The parts of the signal are returned to normal position after an operation thereof by manually lifting the free extremity of the hand lever 9.
What I claim is In a signaling device, a base, a wheel operated member rotatably mounted on said base having a crank arm, a standard secured to said base, a signal arm pivotally mounted adjacent the upper end of said standard, a hand lever pivotally mounted centrally of said standard, a link connection between said signal arm and said hand lever, a second lever pivotally supported on said standard below said hand lever, a link connecting said levers, pivoted links connecting the opposite end of the lower lever with said crank arm, and means connecting the second mentioned lever with said standard adapted to overcome the weight of said signal arm and retain the latter in elevated position after an operation of said wheel operated member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. W. MILLER, FELIX VANANDA.
