l POISON-BOTTLE INDICATOR.
Application filed December 8, 1917. Serial No. 206,269.
To all 1071077? it may concern:
Be it known that l, ARTHUR G. BAXTn-R, a citizen of Canada, residing at lVabana, Belle Isle, Newfoundland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Poison- Bottle Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends the production of an indicator for poison bottles primarily designed to be appliedto bottles or similar containers or vessels containing poison for warning persons using the bot tie that the contents thereof is poison.
A further object of the invention con templates, among other features, the provision of an indicator which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in use, and may be conveniently applied to or removed from the bottle in an easy and expeditious manner.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter bemore fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the indicator shown applied to the bottle, the bottle neck and cork being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the indicator; and I Fig. 3 is a top planview thereof.
In addition to forming finger pieces, the outwardly curved portions 13 of the attaching members or side walls 8 form guides which greatly facilitate the application of the device to the neck of a bottle. That is to say, as the device is applied to a bottle, the outwardly curved portions 13 serve to guide the cork and the neck of the bottle between the attaching portions.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, A denotes a bottle neck provided at its upper end with an annular flange B. The indicator here shown, and including one embodiment of the invention, isdenoted by the character 5, com' prising a hollow body portion 6 stamped from a single blank ofresilient metal and having a closed top wall 7. a In order that Warning may be given to the person using the bottle, that the same contains poisonous matter the side walls 8 of the body are stamped to provide outwardly and laterally extending V-shaped spurs 9, consequently by the user grasping the indicator, he will be given due and ample warnlng as to the nature of the contents of the vessel; Upon the application of the indicator to the bottleneck A, the peripheral edge of the an nul-ar flange B will frictionally engage therewith and at the point of engagement of 'the flange with the indicator, the latter is offset inwardly to provide on the lower end of" the indicator a depending expansi 'body and open out through the lower edge of the throat, as denoted by the character 12, hence rendering the body and throat yieldable, that is to say, affords an expansion of the body and throat upon applying the same to the bottle neck, after which operation, owing to the resiliency of the same,
will automaticallyassume clamping engage The lower edge ofment withthe bottle. the throat 10"at right angles'to and opposite the sides of the slots12, is bent in a downward and outward inclined direction to provide on the lower end of the collar a pair of diametrically disposed lips 13. The, lips are of substantially concavo'convexed form in cross section, which facilitates the application of the thumb and finger of the operator therewith upon the manipulation of the indicator to or from the bottle neck. Formed on the top wall 7 at a point centrally and eXteriorly thereof, is a raised convexed grip 14:. At the point of juncture ofthe throat with the body offsetting the throat inwardly with respect to the plane of the body, provides convexed shoulders 15, which greatly facilitates the disengagement of the, throat from beneath the flange of the bottle neck, by the grasping of the bottle with one hand and the placing of the thumb and first finger under each lip of the'throat, upon the removal of the indicator from the bottle neck. On the other hand, upon the application of the indicator to the bottle neck, the bottle is grasped with one hand,
the thumb of the operator is placed on the grip l4 and the lips are spread by the engagement of the first and second fingers therewith, after which by exerting pressure of the thumb on the grip 14 will force the shoulders. 15 past the flange of the bottle neck and result in the clamping or gripping .of the throat with the neck, assuring of a firm connection of the indicator with said bottle. 7 From the foregoing descriptlon, taken-1n connection with the accompanying drawshown is merely illustrative and that such is claimed as new is A poison indicator for bottles comprising a hollow cylindrical body having its upper end closed and its lower end open for receiving the neck and cork of a bottle, said body being provided in opposite sides with longitudinal incisions thereby forming a pair of yieldable transversely curved attaching members, the intermediate portions of said attaching members being offset for forming retaining shoulders and neck engaging portions, the free lower portions of said transversely curved attaching members being curved outwardly for forming combined guides and finger engaging portions.
In testimony whereof I afliXmy signature.
