2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- FREDERICK SCI-IWARZ, or BERNE, INDIANA.
SWING.
I alcitizen of the United States, residing at Berne in the county ofAdams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Swings, of which the tollowing is a specification.
Thi invention relates to swings and more especially to swings of the suspended porch or ceiling type and the primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby the occupant of the swing maypropel the same without the exercise of great effort and without any appreciablebackward or forward movement of the body so that the occupant may swing'with greatest ease and comfort.
1n the use of a rope swing it is customary to alternately pull and push on the side ropes in order to propel the swing and the present invention has as a further ObJBCt to provide means whereby a similar effect may be produced in a suspended swing having relatively rigid side members.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the propelling means for the swing that the same may be most conveniently reached and operated by the occupant of the swing or by two or more occupants when desired.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the swing embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear sectional View through the lower portion of the swing;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lower portion of the swing;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line a e of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a group perspective View illustrating parts of the propelling device,
In the drawings the suspension members of the swing are indicated in general by the numeral 1 and each comprises a bar 2 of wood or any other suitable material provided at its upper end with any suitable means, as for example a bracket 35 whereby the bar may be 'pivotally suspended for swinging movement from a porch roof or other supporting structure. These bars are connected and braced by means of cross I'Ods 4 and 5 located respectively near their upper and lower ends and, of course, the said bars may be of any desired length. Each bar is the flexible Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. *7,- 1920. Application filed April 10, 1919. Serial No. 288,955.
formed at its'lower endwith an opening 6v (7 and fitted through this opening is the reduced threaded portion 7 of theshank 8 of a bolt 9, the unreduced portion of the shank of the bolt being cylindrical and the reduction of the shank providing a shoulder 10 which bears against one side tive bar, reducedportion of the shank so as to bear against the opposite side of the bar and thus. secure thebolt to thebar. The propelling device is indicated in general by the numeral 12 and the same comprises a handle bar 13 which extends transversely between the outer ends of spacedarms 14.
of the respectend upwardly as indicated by the numeral 15 and at their upper ends are formed with openings 16 receiving the cylindrical portion S ot the respective bolts 9, the said arms being thus pivotally connected with the lower ends of the bars 2.. A bolt 17 of the same'construction as thebolt 9 above described, is fixed upon each arm 14 near the bend 15 andfpivotally mounted upon the cylindrical portion of the shank of each of these bolts is a link 18 provided upon its in ner face with a boss 19 engaging against the outer face of the arm 14:. The links 18 are provided'at their .lower ends with openings 20, and chains or other suitable flexible elements 21 are connected through the openings and at their lower endsare suitably connected with the opposite ends of the seat of the swing, which seat is indicated in general by the numeral22. The seat 22 preferbly comprises a sheet metal body 23 which is suitably curvedto provide the usual seat portion and the back rest, and this sheet metal body is supported at its end edges upon the flanges of angleirons 24 to which elements 21 are directly connected.
From the foregoing description of the invention and byreference to the drawings it will be understood that normally the. propelling device assumesthe position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of thedrawings, that is to say, with thehandle bar 13 extending transversely in front of the seat 22. Normally the upwardly bent ends 15 of the arms 14 of the propelling device will assume a substantially vertical position as shown in the said figures due to the weight imposed upon the links 18 tending to pull the same in a downward direction. It will now be under- The searms near the r rear ends are. curved to exa'nut 11 being threaded onto the stood that by alternately pushing and pulling upon the handle-bar 13 of thepropelling device, the arms 14 will be rocked upon their pivots thus alternately moving the pivots 17 with relation to the pivots 9 in such manner as to disturb the equilibrium of the parts and so that the suspension members 2 will be caused to swing upon their pivots 3. In order to enter the swing it is only necessary to swing the propelling device upwardly until its handle bar 13 hasfbe'en brought into relativelyclose proximity to the'low'er cross bar, 5 thus ail'ording ample room at the front of the seat to permit of its ready oc- V rigid suspension members '2, I may employ chains or the like.
" Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
'lfln a single seated swing, s inging sus pension members, apropelhng device in- .said suspension members,
After occupancy of the seat, the r eluding arms pivotally connected with the said suspension members, the arms extending downwardly and forwardly from the a handlebar connecting the arms, links pivotally connected with the arms at points below the pivotal connections between the arms and the suspension members; and a seat supported from the said links. 7 V V 2. In a single seated swing, swinging suspension members, a propelling device comprising side ni'emb'e'rs and'a'coiine'cting handlebar, the side members being provided at theirinner ends with upwardly proj ecting portions pivotally sion members, depending links pivotally connected with the said upwardly projecting portions of the side members at points below the points of pivotal connection of the suspension members therewith, each link having a spacing projection at its piv ote'd end engaging the respective side member, and aseat suspendedfrom the said links..- J
In testimony whereof I 'afiix my signature;
