I Application filed January 3, 1920. Serial No. 34?,137.
portions to swing at their lower portions toward and away from the rear edge of the sub-sill of the window frame, and my object is the provision of a simple inexpensive device capable of ready adjustment and ready installation, as well as one which will be" durable and effective.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating the practical application of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail striker plate,
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the latch plate.
Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figs. 2 and 3 my invention proposes a striker plate 10 having its single centrally disposed aperture 11 for the reception'of a fastening screw and the like, one edge along the outer side of the striker plate being turned in one direction and be i ving relatively sharp'as indicated at 12, to
bite into the wood of a sub-sill, and its opposite edge being turned in the opposite direction as indicated at 13 and sharpened toreceive the engaging portion of a latch plate.
The latch plate 14: as seen particularly in Fig. 3 has portions 15 and 16 bent at approximately right angles, portion 15 hav ing an intermediate opening 17 for thereception of a screw or like fastening member and having a sharpened engaging edge 18 outturned along its upper portion. The portion 16 is provided with an upturned free end 19, and with a transverse rib 20' ad acent to said edge 19, forming a downwardly presented channel 21 the latter of frame abuts in the closed perspective view of which is adapted to receive the upturned engaging edge 13 of the striker plate.
In utilizing my invention, the lower cross rail 22 of'a screen 23 receives the latch plate 14, the angular portion 15 of which is secured by a screw 24 extendingthrough its opening 17. The sharpened edge 18 bites into the material of the screen frame and it is thus necessary to utilize but a single screw fastener which considerably. reduces 'the Work necessary to either install or adjust the latch plate as desired. With the latch plate secured as described, .its angular latch arm 16 extends approximately at rightv angles to the inner face of thevscreen frame,
and the latch plate is so connected to the screen frame as shown in Fig. 1 as that it will shift inwardly slightly above the upper surface of the sub-sill 25 against the outer edge of which the cross rail 22 ofthe screen in Fi '1.
To receive the latch arm of the latch plate, I 7
the striker plate 10 is secured to'the upper surface of the sub-sill25 by a single screw fastener 26 through its opening 11,its down turned edge 12 biting into the surface of the subsill so that it is thus obvious a single position as shown Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Sept, *7, 1?}29,
screw fastener is necessary, which facilitates installation and adjustment, WVith the striker plate so secured in place it is obvious that the free edge 19 of the latch arm 16 will engage the upper surface of the a striker plate and ride inwardly along the same as the screen frame is shifted to closed position, the latch plate and its latch arm being formed of a material having sufficient resiliency to permit its arm 16 to yield vertically in the shifting of its free endover the striker. plate and vertically over the upturned inner edge 13 which seats in the downwardly presented transverse groove 21 when the plates come to rest in the'flclosed position shown in Fig. 1. v
It is thus obvious my invention proposes a screen catch capable of ready installation, removal and adjustment, as well as one ca pable of ready, simple and inexpensive manufacture, and one which will be effective and durable in use.
Iclaim: V
A window screen catch consisting of a striker plate having a flat body portion prothe opposite direction and sharpened and a latch plate having an opening to receive a fastener and an angular sharpened edge at one end, said latch plate having an angularly projecting latch arm provided with a bent edge at its free extremity and with 10 a transverse rib adjacent to said edge forming a channel thereunder to receive the latch engaging edge of the striker plate as described.
