To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, J OHN A. HAcnRsTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scrantom-in the county of Lackawanna'and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Main- Shaft Drives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriters and has for its primary object to provide driving connections of improved, construction for transmitting power from the main spring or motor to the main ribbon shaft. {,"ne of the objects of my invention is to provide improved reversible driving connections between a spring motor and the main ribbon shaft. Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings which exemplify my invention in a preferred embodiment.
In the drawings, 7 I Figure 1 is a front elevation of a. typewriter motor provided with its driving con nection and constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, a bracket 1 is provided with flanges 2 and 3, by means of which it may be connee-ted up to the typewriter frame. Journaled in the frame vor bracket 1, is a main spring shaft 4. Journaled on the main.
spring shaft is a drum 5 provided with notch 6, within which a screw 7 secures the end of a belt or strap 8,'by means of which the carriage is caused to travel along its guide when the escapemeut mechanism (not shown on the drawings) is in operation. A main spring housing 9 which also turns freely on the main spring shaft 4, is releasably connected to the drum 5 so as to partake of its rotary movement. Within the housing 9 is disposed a main spring 10, one end of said main spring being secured to the main spring shaft 4, while the other end 11 of said main spring is securedto said housing, preferably by having a loop 11 formed therein to slip over one of the arms or fingers 12 which are deflected rearwardly and pass through holes or openings 13 in the rearplate of thefdrum 5. As shown Fig 3, each arm or finger 12 makes a bayonet joint with the back wall of the drum 5, said arm beingprovided with a notch 14 forthis-purpose.- From this de 'scription, it be seen that after the drum 5 and main springhousingl) have been co axially arranged 'onthe main spring shaft L4,,theloop11'ofthe main springhaving been passed over one of the" arms or fingers -12, said drum and housing may be moved toward .eachothenin an axial direction, causing the arms or fingers 12 to pass through the' slots or openings 13, after whlch a relative angular movement between saiddrum and housing causes the bayonet joint to become engaged" on all of said fingers 12. of Fig. -1, a key arm or finger 15 is adapted to be passed through a slot 16, which is provided with an outwardly extending recess 17 which permits the key arm 15 to expand radially and so become locked against the adjacent wall of the drum 5, and thus preventing a releasing angular movement of the-housing on the drum 5. Freely journaled on the main springshaft 4 in front of the main spring housing 9, is a crown wheel 18 provided on its outer periphery with a ratchet 19. Cooperating with the ratchet 191is a pawl 20,-vvhichis;journaled on a pin 21,'carried by a radial lug 22. The pawl 20 is provided .with an arm 23 to which is attached one endof'a spring 24, the other end of sai'dspring being connected to a lug 25, carried by the housing 9. A suitable dog 26 is pivotally mounted at 27 upon the frame or bracket ;1 and is adapted to lock the crown wheel 18 against retrograde movement. The dog 26 is also provided with an inwardly and forwardly ex-'. tending guard arm 28, terminating in a rearwardly presented end 29 which extends under the crown or flange 18 of the crown gear and prevents the. dog 26 from being displaced more than a small angular movement. A main ribbon shaft 30 which is reciprocable axially, has keyed thereto a spur gear 31 which has a peripheral face portion of greater extent than the axial movement of said shaft 30. By means of this construction the gear 31 is adapted to remain in mesh with the crown gear 18 at all times during the reciprocatory movement of the main ribbon shaft 30 which having ratchet engagement with said crown wheel, said dog being provided with a guard arm adapted to engage said crown wheel for limiting the displacement 01 said dog with respect to said crown wheel. 7

crown wheel, provided with forwardly presented gear teeth and with peripheral ratchet teeth, a dog cooperating with said ratchet teeth, said dog being provided with a guard arm extending around said gear teeth and under the flange of said crown wheel, and 'a ribbon drive shaft provided I with a gear meshing with said gear teeth. on

3. In a typewriter, a main spring shaft, a crown wheel journaled thereon, a main spring for driving said crown wheel, a main ribbon drive shaft arranged transversely to said main spring shaft and 'reciprocable endwise with respect thereto, and a spur gear keyed to said main ribbon drive shaft and continuously meshing with said crown wheel, said spur gear having teeth elon-' gated lengthwise of said main ribbon drive shaft to adapt it to remain in mesh with said crown wheel during the combined rotary and reciprocatory movements of said main ribbon drive shaft and whereby the contacting portions of said crown wheel and. spur gear change during the combined rotary and recipi'ocatory movements of said main ribbon shaft.
