To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAKOB PooiEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Replacers, of
j which the following is a specification.
' further object of the invention is to provide an inner and an outer member or casting which are adapted for positioning upon the inner and outer sides of the rail of a railway track for guiding the flanges on the wheels of. the rolling stock into proper engagement with the inner sides of the T-rails of-the track.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of attaching means whereby the said castings or members may be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the railway tracks.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the re-railing structure.

The inner member or section 10 comprises a relatively large body having laterally extending longitudinal flanges 12 upon its inner lower edge, which are provided with a plurality of notches 11 adapted to receive therein spikes as indicated at 15 for securely attaching the member 10 to spaced ties (l. The flanges l2 terminate at spaced distances from the transverse center of the body or casting 10 and a chair 16 is formed upon the body intermediate the ends of the flanges 12. of the rail A, and projects upon the opposite side of the base from that ufion which the body 10 is mounted. The chair 16 is provided with an opening 17 near its outer end which receives therethrough a Wedge 18, adapted for wedging engagement against the outer edge of the base of the rail A, se curely clamping the body 10 to. the rail and positioning the inner portion of the base of the rail A within the recesses 19 formed in.
the body 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The body 10 has a lateral projection 20 thereon which fits against the inner side of the web of the rail and against the under side of the inner portion of the ball of the rail, providing a snug fitting engagement between the body or member 10 and the rail A.
The lateral extension 20 extends throughout only a part of the length of the casting or body 10, at the intermediate portion thereof, and the inner side of the casting for the major portion of its length inclines toward the web 01' the rail from its uppermost portion which is spaced from the rail. The body 10 is provided with opposed leads 21 inclining upwardly toward the transverse center of the body from each end thereof, and bordered upon either side by upstanding flanges 22 at their inner edges and 23 at their outer edges. These leadways converge at the transverse center of the body and gradually decrease in width as they increase in height. The flanges 22 terminate intermediate thetransverse center of the body 10 providing an opening or space 24 to permit the flanges on the wheels of the rolling stock which is being replaced uponthe-track to pass ofi of the leads upon the extension 20 55 as they extend toward the transverse cenwhile the peripheries of'the'wheels engage the balls of the rail A, thus properly positioning the, wheels at this or the corresponding side of the rolling stock. The wheels of the opposite sides of the rolling stock are replaced by means of the structure 11.
The structure 11 comprises a main body casting having laterally extending longitudinal flanges 30 along its outer lower edges which terminate at spaced distances from the transverse center of the body and are provided with a plurality of notches 31 any one of which in each flange is adapted to receive a spike 32 such as ordinarily used for fastening the T-rails to the ties of a' railway track, for securely attaching the casting 11 to spaced ties G and preferably the same ties to which the casting 10 is attached.
The portions of the outer sides of the casting or body 11 intermediate the innenends of the flanges 30 is flat and has a rib 33 formed thereon intermediate its edges. This rib engages in a recess 34 formed in a clamping wedge The clamping wedge 35 extends through an' opening in the verti cal portion 36 of the attaching chair 37, and is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 38 extending transversely thereagainst accidental movement out of its receiving opening by a cotter pin 41, to which the pin 39 is connected by a flexible member or chain 42. The chair 3? extends beneath the body 11 and the base of the rail B, having an overhanging portion 42 formed upon its end opposite to the end upon which the vertical portion 36 is formed, which overhanging portion forms, with the main body of the chair 37a recess 43 for receiving therein the inner portion of the base. of the rail B as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The body or casting 11 is provided with opposed leads 44 and 45 leading upwardly from its outer end, and gradually inclining ter of the body. The lower outer edges of the leads 44 and 45 are substantially flush with the upper surface of the ties C so that the sleeves will pick up the wheels of the derailed rolling stock for leading them up wardly and replacing them upon the rail 13. The loads 44 and 45 are bordered on" their inner edges by upstanding flanges 46 and on their outer edges by upstanding flanges 47. These leads 44 and 45 like the leads.2l I
converge laterally as they extend upwardly providing constricted portions opening out through the space 48 formed at the spaced ends of the upstanding flanges 46., The body 11 is enlarged laterally at its inner side intermediate its ends, providing the enlargements 49. The inner ends of the flanges 46 are enlarged, as clearly shown at 50, and theirinner edges are angled for alinement with the outer angled edges 51 of the flange guide ways 52, formed in the section 53 of the re-railer or replacer. The section 53 has depending lugs 54 upon its inner edge which engage the end of the enlargement 49 to prevent longitudinal displacement of the section 53 which rests upon the upper. surface of the ball of the rail B and is' provided for guiding the flanges of the wheels of the rolling-stock over the rail B for proper engagement with the inner surface of the ball thereof. Theend portions of the upper surface of the member or section 53 are beveled and inclined downwardly toward. theterminals of the said members orsections as shown at 55 in the drawings, to permit the easy riding of the peripheries of the wheels of the rolling stock thereover for engagement upon the upper surface of the ball of the rail B.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but
I claim:
1. In a re-railer, the combination with rails and ties of a railroad,-of a pair of members, means for attaching one of said members at the inner side of a rail, means for attaching the other of said members to the outer side of a rail, detachable means overlying the ball of the rail and associated with said last named member forguid in'g a wheel and flange across the rail to which the member is attached, and means for securing the members to the railroad ties;
2. In a re-railer, the combination, of a palr of. members, means foratt'achmg one of said members at the inner side of a rail, means for attaching the other of said members to the. outer side of a rail, upwardly extending lead ways formed upon said members and converging. at their upper ends and at the transverse centers of the members, upstanding flanges along the sides of said leadways, the flanges adjacent the rails to which the members are attached, terminating short of the transverse centers of the members, and detachable means associated with sald second mentioned member for guiding a wheel and flange across the rail to which the second mentioned member is attached. 4
3. In a re-railer, the combination with a rail, of a member comprising a relatively large body provided with a pair of leadmemes Ways extending from each end thereof, to-' tend to the transverse center of the body,
upstanding flanges formed along the sides of said leadways, the flanges at one side of the leadway terminating short of the transverse center of the body,-and means for detachably connecting said member to the base of a rail,

5. In a re-railer, the combination, of a member comprising a relatively large body provided with a pair of leadways extending from each end thereof toward its transverse center, said leadways gradually decreasing formed along the sides of saidleadways, the
flanges at one side of the leadway terminating short of the transverse center of the body, a laterally extending enlargement formed upon one side of said body intermediate its ends and adapted to be positioned adj acenta railway rail to which the body is attached, a removable member adapted for co-action with said body for resting upon the ball of the railway rail, said removable member provided with ways having communication with said leads to guide a wheel and its flange across the rail.
(3. In re-railer, the combination, of a member comprising a relatively large body provided with a pair of leadways extending from each end thereof toward the transverse center, said leadways gradually decreasing in width asthey extend to the transverse center of the body, upstanding flanges formed along the sides of said leadways, the flanges at one side of the leadway terminating short of the transverse center of the body, a laterally extending enlargement ends of said laterally extending enlarge ments to prevent longitudinal movement of the removable members.

In a re-railer, the combination, of a member comprising a "relatively large body provided with a pair of leadways extending from each end thereof toward the trans verse center, said leadways gradually decreasing in width as they extend to the transverse center of the body, upstanding flanges formed along thesides of said leadways, the flanges at one side of the leadway terminating short of the transverse cen ter of the-body, a laterally extending enlargement formed upon one side of said body intermediate its ends and adapted to be positioned adjacent a railway rail to which the body is attached, a removable member adapted for co-action with said body for resting upon the'ball of the railway rail, said removable member provided. with ways having commui'iication with said leads to guide a wheel and its flange across the rail, lateral lugs upon said removable members engaging the ends of said laterally extending enlargements to prevent longitudinal movement of the removable members, a clamping chair adapted for clamping engagement with said body and the web of a railway rail to attach the said body to the rail. f
8. In a ro-railer, the combination with a rail road trackway of a memberadapted to be detachably mounted upon the ouside of one of the rails of said rail road track, said member overlying the ball of. the rail and having grooves upon said overlying portion to guide the flange of a wheel, and a second member adapted to be detachably mounted upon the inside of the rail opposite the flrst mentioned rail, the top of the second member adjacent the ball of the rail terminating below the top of the ball of said rail.
