To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK CHURCHILL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain useful Improvements in Buoyant Life-Saving Fittings and Appliances for Ships, of which the following is a specification. Y

This invention relates to improvements in the type of buoyant life saving fittings and appliances for ships described in my application for U. S. A. Letters Patent Serial No. 333,29 l, of October 25th, 1919.

This invention has for its object to provide means which render said fittings and appliances more secure, effective and reliable.

According to this invention a deck cabin or room fitting or appliance for ships of the type hereinbefore referred to, comprises chiefly a deck cabin or room, which has two series of screw-threaded spindles mounted on a frame in said cabin or room and with ends projecting through the end walls of said cabin or room, a bracket adjacent to each bulwark secured to the ships deck having in the top a pocket and near the bottom a socket in wiiich pocket and socket the said plate and end of the bottom spindle are adapted to engage respectively and means for covering and thereby protecting said pockets.

I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a detached sectional side view and end view of the cabin or room.

Figs. .3 and 4 are respectively a detached plan and side View of the bulwark fitting shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a sectional end View and side view and Fig. 7 a side view partly in section, showing the invention applied to such as a chart or wireless room on the deck of the ship.

Similar letters refer. to similar parts throughout the various views.

. Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the annexed drawings to the inner side of each end of said deck cabin or room a formed with a bottom a, are secured a series of frames 6 in which are mounted two screw-threaded spindles 0, (Z located above each other, each provided with a hand wheel 6, 7".

The front end of the bottom spindle 0 is adapted to engage in a socket g formed in a bracket it secured to the deck against the bulwarks i, the front end of the upper spindle extending through a slot is formed in the top of the. bracket h and being provided with a plate Z adapted to engage in a pocket m formed in front of said slot, to tie the deck cabin or room securely to said bracket and thus to the bulwarks.

The space between the bulwarks c' and cabin or room a is covered by an inclined plate a hinged to the cabin or room.

The said screw-threaded spindles can be operated jointly from within the cabin or room a by means of the hand wheels 6, f and gearing 0, p, g, r, s and from the top of the cabin or room a by means of the horizontal shaft I? mounted in the support 1) and provided with hand wheels u and by means of a belt or chain drive 10, cc, 3 located between the shaft 25 and the cross shaft 2.

Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, 7, each series of said screw-threaded spindles may consist of any suitable number thereof, say for instance three, and to the edge of the plates a may be hinged auxiliary plates 2, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, adapted to cover the open side of the pockets on in the bracket h Figs. 1, 3 and 4, and thereby form a protection for same.

I claim 1. A buoyant life saving fitting and appliance for ships,'comprising a series of frames secured to the inside of the deck cabin or room, two screw-threaded spindles horizontally mounted above each other in said frames, a gear rotatably connecting together said spindles, a bracket secured to the ship deck adjacent to the bulwarks, a pocket in the top and a socket in the bottom of said brackets, a plate on the front end of said top spindle adapted to engage in said pocket and the front end of said bottom spindle engaging in said socket, for the purpose speci- 2.
