UNITED srATEs FRITZ w. SCHNABEL, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed March 29, 1920. Serial No. 369,707.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ V. SGI-INABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for ladders to enable the same to be used for supporting plank or platforms on which mechanics may stand.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel improved attachment of the kind stated which will firmly support the plank, the devicebeing so constructed and arranged that the plank receives its support from two rungs of each ladder.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to he hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying. drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of the ladders showing the plank supporting means, and
Fig, 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, two ladders being shown, as well as the plank on which the workmen stand.
lrtefcrring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the side rails of two ladders placed face-to-face in spaced relation, with a workmans flatform. (3 extending therebetween. This platform is a plank, and the same is supported by the ladders by seating at one end on one of the rungs 7 of one of the lad ders, its other end being supported. by seating on a rung of the other ladder. This is a very common expedient and hence need not be further described.
, It will be evident from the foregoing, that if the sole support of the plank 6 is the rungs 'Z, in the event of breakage of the latter, the plank will slip. The device which. is the subject matter of the present application for patent has been designed to prevent an accident of this kind, and it consists of a hanger structure which is so constructed andarranged that each end of the ladder is supported by two rungs; 1 The device comprises two hooks 8, having long shanks 9 between which the plank 6 fits. 9 carry a crossbar 10'exte'nding transversely beneath the plank 6, which latter seats on the cross bar. The cross bar 10 is set back from the end of the plank 6 a sullieient distanee to allow the latter to seat on the rung 7. Nuts 11 screwed on the lower endsof the shanks 9 secure the cross bar 10 to said shanks, with spring washers 12 interposed between the nuts and the under side of the cross bar. The hooks 8 are engaged over the rung 13 which is next above the rung 7 on which the plank 6 rests.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the plank 6 is supported by the rung 7 and also by the cross bar supported by the rung l3, and in the event of either one of said rungs breaking, the plank will not slip as it is still suported by the other rung.
The cross bar 10 is adjustable as to height on the hook shanksS) to accommodate the device to ladders of different spacing of rungs.
I claim:
1. The combination with a pair of ladders placed face to face in spaced relation,.and a platform extending between said ladders and supported at its ends by vone of the rungs thereof.;.of hooks hung on rungs of the ladders above the aforesaid rungs supporting the platform, said hooks having depending shanks straddling the platform, and cross-bars carried by the shanks, on which cross-bars the platform also seats.
2. The combination with a pair of ladders placed face to face in spaced relation, and a platform extending between said ladders and supported at itsends by one of the rungs thereof; of hooks hung on the rungs of the ladders above the aforesaid rungs supporting the platform, said hooks having depending shanks straddling the platform,
The shanks and cross-bars carried by the shanks and FRITZ W. SCHNABEL.
