My invention relates to new and useful improvements in guards for incandescent lamps, the principal objectbeing to provide a lamp guard or cage with relatively simple key controlled means which will be effective 1n locking the guard or cage and'thecontained lamp to' the lamp socket thereby preventing the theft orunauthorized removal of the lamp 'Further-objectsof my invention are to provide an incandescent lamp guard-which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which will be veryef'fectivein performing its intended functions; and further to provide a lamp guard having key; controlled" means for looking it to the lamp socket, and also having key controlled, means for looking the hinged members that normally close the opening in the guard or cage through which the lamp is inserted or removed.

The central portion of the I section of wire or the like, and from which themembers 17 are formed, is bent to form a horizontally disposed loop 19, the opening through which is threaded as designated by 1 20, and secured in any su table manner to locking means between the-inner ends of this loop is a depending tubular member 21 which performs the functions of a socket for the key utilized for manipulating the members and 17 s The locking means contemplated by my invention comprises a threaded shank 22 which is adapted to be screw-seated in the threaded apertures 16 and 20, the lower end of said shank terminating in a disk 23 from the underside of which pro ects a key receiving member 2a that is preferably unscrewed with ajtool other than the required key. To release the members 15 and v17 so that the same may be swung downward to permit the insertion or removal of a lamp bulb, a key is applied to member 24L and the shank 22 unscrewed from loop 16,
threaded shank '30 that is provided on one and this action disconnects the inner ends of members 15 and 17 and permit said members to be swung downward into substantially vertical positions.
The socket engaging ring or collar 12 is preferably formed of asingle piece of sheet 'metal, the end portions of which are bent outwardly to form substantially parallel cars 25. Fixed in any suitable manner to oneof these ears, and upon the outer face thereof, is a nut 26 the threaded aperture in which coincides with a threaded aperture 27 formedthrough theear to which said nut is attached;-and radially fixed on the other ear on the outer face thereof is a cup shaped socket 28. Formed through the bottom of this socket and the ear to which it is attached is a threaded aperture 29, and screw seated in. the apertures 29 and 27 is a end with an angular key receiving member 31, and which latter is positioned in the socket 28 Obviously, where this 'construc tion is provided, it is necessary'to applv a suitable key to the, angular member81 on the end of the threaded shank 30 to draw the ends of the collar 12 together to clamp the lamp socket or to release said ends when it is desired to remove the cage from the socket.
In some instances, and particularly where it is desired to form the collar 12 of relatively heavy material, said collar may be formedin two parts, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and the adjacent ends of said parts connected by threaded shanks 30, as just described.
In the event that the members 15 and 17 are formed of narrow strips of sheet metal, it is desirable for the purpose of rigidity that they be bent so that they are substan tially U-shaped in cross-section. By making the loops 15 and 18 on the outer ends of members 15 and17 inelongated form, said 7 members can be utilized upon guards of different sizes or guards wherein the base rings vary in diameter.
A lamp guard of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and as the opening of the hinged portions of the guard and the release of the socket engaging collar thereof is dependent upon theme of a certain form of key, the theft or unauthorized removal of the inclosed lamp from the socket and likewise the removal of the cage from the socket is prevented. I
It will be readily understoodthat minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved lamp guard can be made and substituted-for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the'appencled claim.
I claim:
In an incandescent lamp guard, a wire cage adapted to inclose the lamp body,
members hinged to the lower portion of said cage and cooperating to form a closure for the bottom thereof, the-inner ends of which members are adapted to overlap, key operated means removably seated in said 7 key operated means. 7
