INGOT-MOLD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: T. ROWLEY,
a citizen of the United'States, residing at- Pitt'sburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have lnvented a new and useful Improvement in Ingot- Molds, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements 1n molds for casting ingots or billets.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and eificient mold by the use of which billets can be cast, and if desired, converted into bars of any considerable length without reheating. I accomplish this by means of the apparatus herelnatter more specifically described, reference belng had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which:

Referring to said drawings, '1 is a frame constructed of heavy angle iron, in which the casting apparatus is supported. The said casting apparatus comprises a plurality of vertically disposed molds, each of which is formed otthe'v movable sections AB. The upper endof each of said molds is secured to thewater jacketed neck piece 2. Sections A and B are each water jacketed in any usual manner, are provided with an inlet a and an outlet 6, for the a'dmission and discharge of'water for the purpose ogt lowering the temperature of the metal charged into the said moldsand at. the same time cooling the molds; The'neck or cap piece is also provided with a vwater jacket for a like purpose and with an inlet and an outlet, d and e respectively. The lower end of the mold is closed by a door or bottom plate 3, which is likewise water cooled, having an interior chamber in which is let a conduit 4, the outer end of which is closed and through which a similar conduit 5isinserted..

The movable sections A B-of said mold are capable of being moved slightly irom and toward each)other, by means 'of. the toggle members D, which are connected by means of the vertically disposed link the ends of which are connected to the lever members or links 8 and 9 respectively. I The said toggle members D are pivotally mounted upon stub .sh'afts 50 formed in connec-' tion with bases 51 which are secured to the sides of the sections of the mold. The said toggle members are operated by a trans versely disposed member 10, which secured to a verticallydisposed shaft or .rod 11. The upper end of said rod llis connected to a lever 12, the innerend of which is pivotally secured upon a boss or lug 13, secured to a frame, the opposite free end terminating in an operating lever or rod14.
The member 10 terminates. at its ends in downwardly extending yokes 15 which loosely. receive the members 8 of the upper o set of toggle links D, the ends of the yokes 15 being provided with screws 16 and -17 which are adjustable, the ends of the screws engaging the upper and lower edges "of the toggle member 8 and the adjustment of the' 4 I screws regulating 'the play orlooseness between the yokes and the toggle members.
The said rod 11 is in reality formed in two sections, the lower end of the 'upper section ,terminating in a socket 18, and the upper end of the lower section terminating inthe lower end of said socket 18.

rigldly secured to the loweiwsection of the 1 rigidly secured upon the lowe'ri'endof said rod and is ada tedto swing with thelower section thereo whenever the said rod is. moved downward, disengaging the ;.cl1'1tc formed by the. serrated surface on the bearing 19 and the abutment 21, carrying the 10.0. upon sald rod 11, between said abutment and door downward and opening the lower end of the mold. The torsion of the spring 22 swings the door horizontally.
If it is desirable, a further downward movement of the rod 11 operates the toggle members D a slight distance, so as to relieveslightly the pressure of the mold upon the metal contained therein, if such operation is ating the to gle members, opensthe members A and I suflicient to permit the ingot to drop-down and enter the bite of the rolls 24, the action of which upon the ingot con-r verts the same into bars orbillets of con-- siderable length. A supplemental set of rolls may be employed for still further reducing the bar or billet.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a casting apparatus, the combination of a mold comprising two sections, the said sections being connected by toggle members,
means to operate said toggle members, a water jacketed neck piece constituting the upper end of the mold sections adapted to receive the metal initially, the lower end of said mold sections being closed by a water jacketed door, and means to swing said door into open position simultaneously with the opening of the mold sections.
2. In a casting apparatus, the combination of a mold comprising two sections, the said sections being connected by toggle members, means to operate said toggle members, a neck piece constituting the upper, end of the mold sections adapted to receive the metal initially, the lower end of said mold sections being closed by a door, and means to swing said door into open position simultaneously with the opening of the mold sections.

toggle connection between the complemental mold sections, and means for simultaneously operating the togglemembers and releasing door.
