MUFFLER CUT-OUT.
Application filed June 10, 1918, serial No. 239,29 Renewed June 28, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Queen F. Kinnra'r men, a citizen of the United States, residing at South English, in the county of Keolruk, State oi lowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Muliler Cut- Uuts; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description or the iin'ention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cut-outs for automobile engine exhaust pipes.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which can be easily and quickly operated by the driver whereby the cut-out will be held in either open or closed position.
Another. object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which is capable of ready attachment to the exhaust pipe of the engine without radical modifications to the pipe.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description. when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
.lligure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the exhaust pipe showing my invention applied thereto, the valve being in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view the valve being in open position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view throi'lgh the pipe and valve.
Fig. l is a vertical. transverse sectional view taken on the line 4. l of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to'the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of the exhaust pipe in which is formed an openlng 11. Engaged around the pipe, adjacent the opening, is a clamping band 12 the same being formed of two sections held together by means of the bolts 13 and 1d. Pivotally mounted on the lower bolt 14, and between the lower ends of the band, is a lever 15, one end of which has secured thereto a plate 16 which is curved to conform to the curvature of the exhaust pipe, so that it will fit thereon to close the opening 11. The other end of the lever extends beyond the other side of the band and has connected thereto a vertical rod 17 which extends upwardly through the floor 18 of the automobile Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1%)20.
Serial No. $92,514:.
where it is provided with a foot-piece 19. The lower end of one section of the band has an arm 20 projecting forward from the bolt 1% and turned aside slightly at its front end, and the rear end oi? the lever 15 is also turn ed aside slightly as seen in Fig. 4:, and the extremities of the arm and the lever are connected by a contractile spring 21 which freely passes the bolt id as will be clear.
i /hen the rod 1'? is depressed by hearing on the foot piece 19, the lever 15 swings on its pivot to carry the plate 16 upward and close the opening 11, and the spring 21 is carried downward past the pivot pin 14 and holds the lever in this position as seen in Fig. 1. ()n the other hand, when the operator grasps the 'foot piece 19 and draws upward on the rod 17, the lever is swung to the opposite position to cause the plate to uncover the opening 11, and the spring 21 again pass is the pivot 1 1- to hold the lever in this position as seen in Fig. 2. In other words, the mmstruction is such that the spring is distended most at the intermediate or neutral position of the lever, and its contraction tends to hold the latter in either extreme position.
lhus there is provided a novel and simple, as well as etlicient device whereby the cutout can be quickly and easily opened or closed and held in either of said positions without the necessity of maintaining the foot of the operator on the pedal.
/V hat is claimed is:
A. muffler cut-out for automobile engines comprising an exhaust pipe having an opening in its lower side, a band clamped around the pipe in the rear oi the opening and having an arm extending from its lower end forward and bent aside, a lever pivoted be' tween its extremities to said lower end of the band and having its rear end bent aside, a plate carried by its front end and adapted to close said opening, an operating rod rising from the rear end of the lever, and a contractile spring connecting the lateral bent portions Off the arm and the lever and passing the lever-pivot in its neutral position, whereby the lever is held in either extreme position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the HGSQIICG of two witnesses.
