THROTTLE GOVERNOR.
To all whom it nlay concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD L. Cou'rr, a citizen of the United States, residin at tate of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Throttle Governor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention re ates to a governor for the throttle or butterfl valve of an' internal combustion engine an aims to provide a device which will automatically close the butterfly valve regardless of the position of the accelerator. I
The device is designed particularly for use upon trucks so as to prevent the chauffeurs from driving the truck above a predetermined speed. The device is so con-' structed that if the accelerator, either foot or hand controlled, is moved to the full open position, this device will operate so as to tend to maintain the engine at a predetermined even rate of speed.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a governor of this'nature which is adapted to be interposed between the accelerator mechanism and the crank of the butterfly valve in place of the usual link structure.
Another'very important objectof the invention is to provide a device of this nature having a' very simple structure which will be both efficient and reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and install, durable, not liable to readily get out of order, easy to adjust, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the descrip tion. proceeds, the invention resides in'certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

his plate 7 is provided with an opening 9 thru which is slidable a rod 10 the end of which is offset as at 11 in order to be passed through the eye of crank C held in place by a cotter pin 12 or the like.
A plunger member 13 is aflixed to this rod 10 within the cylinder. A tubular member 14 is threaded through the opening of the end 6 of the c linder 5 and is closed at its outer end an open at its inner end. A spring 15 is disposed about the rod 10 and impinges against the lunger member 13 an the closed end of t 6 tube 14, for nor-' mally holding the plunger 13 adjacent the plate 7 A bolt 17 is threaded through the closed end of the tube 14 and extends in alinement with the rod 10 and forms a stop.

A nipple 21 is engaged in the intake manifold A and a. nipple 22 extends from the cylinder 5 adjacent the end 6. A flexible hose or the like 23 is en aged with these nipples 21 and 22. When t e internal combustion engine is in operation, a certain amount of suction is created in the intake manifold A as is well known. This suction becomes greater as the engine speeds up. In the operation of this device, it will be seen that when the accelerator .F is depressed, the device will be moved to bring the crank C so as to open the butterfly valve. As the engine speeds up, the suction in the intake manifold A will tend to create a vacuum in the cylinder 5 through hose 23, thereby drawing plunger 13 toward end 6 of the cylinder and compressing the spring 15. This action of the plunger will cause the closing of the butterfly valve.
Itwill therefore be apparent that by a proper adjustment of the tube 14, this device may be utilized as a governor for preventing excessive speed of the internal com.- bustion engine.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be now clearly understood by those skilled in the art without a more detailed descrip-" tion thereof. It is desired, however, to point out numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of inven tion as hereinafter claimed, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described for attachment between an accelerator and the operating means of a butterfly valve embodying means for shortening the device operable by suction created in the intake manifold.
2. A device of the class described includ-.
ing a cylinder, a plunger in the cylinder. a rod attached to the plunger, means for normally holding the plunger toward one end of the cylinder, and means for communicating the cylinder with theintake manifold of an internal combustion engine.
3. A device of the class described includ ing a cylinder, a plunger in the cylinder, a
rod attached to the plunger, means for normally holdin the plunger toward one end of the cylin er, means for communicating the cylinder with the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, and means for limitin the movement of said rod.
4. A device of the class described including a cylinder, means for attaching the cylinder to an accelerator, a plunger slidable in the cylinder, a rod attached to the plunger, a spring in the cylinder tending to hold the plunger toward one end of the cylinder,
and means for tensioning the spring and means for connecting the cylinder intake manifold.
5. A device of the class described including a cylinder, a plunger slidable in the cylinder, a spring tending to hold the plunger at one end of the cylinder, a tube threaded through the other end of the cylinder' for receiving the spring and having a closed outer end, a rod extending through the plunger, fixed thereto, and terminating within the cylinder, said rodadapted to be attached to the crank of a butterfly valve, a bolt extending through the closed end of the tube in alinement with the rod, thereby limiting the movement of the plunger in the cylinder, said cylinder provided with a to the nipple adapted to be communicated with the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, and means for attaching the cylinder to an accelerator.
6'. A device of the class described for attachment between an accelerator and the operating means of a charge regulating valve of an internal combustion engine embodying means for varying the length of the device, said means being automatically operable during the operation of the engine.
