To all whom it may coamima:
Be it known that I, 'innnnrm DAVIDENIA, a cltizen of Russia, residing at Detroit,
county of Wayne, and State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ship-Salvage Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for raising sunken ships from the bed of the ocean or other body of water and it has for a general object to provide a means whereby such ships may be raised. from a depth greater than that to which divers can descend.
More specifically speaking the invention has for an object to provide a lifting cable with a device adapted to automatically grip a part of the ship whereby the latter may be raised.
For further comprehension of the-invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In carrying out my invention 1 provide four ships or vessels which may be of usual construction and driven by steam or oil or any suitable motive power. These ships are indicated generally by the reference numeral 10, and when in operation to raise a sunken ship are arranged 011 the surface of the water above the latter as shown in Fig. 1, two on each side of the sunken ship respectively at the front and rear end thereof.
Each of these ships is provided with a pair of cable winding devices carried on the deck one toward the front and one toward the rear end thereof, and located in deck houses 11. Each of these devices comprises a motor 12 here shown as of the vertical reciprocating type and driven by steam, the piston rod 13 of this motor being Specification of Letters Patent.

connected by a connecting rod 1 1 with a cranlrarm 15 on a shaft 16 on which is fixed a plnion 17 meshing with a gear 18 on a stub-shaft 19 journaled in brackets such as 20 fixed to a platform or base 21011 the deck 10 of the ship. This gear 18 meshes in turn with another gear 22 fixed on the shaft 23 of a winding drum 24L, this shaft being journaled in standarrfls such as 25 also fixed on the platform 21. it cable 26 is connected to and wound upon each drum, passing outwardly through an opening 27 in the side wall of the deck house and over a roller 28 suitably mounted in the lower end of said opening.
Each of the cables 26 has fixed to the end thereof a grappling device indicated generally at29 in Fig. 1 and comprising a short cylindrical casing or head 30 having a depending stirrup-like member or extension 31 on its lower end, the opening between the two legs of the stirrup being carried upward into the head 30 as at 82. Pivotally mounted in the lower end of this stirrup are a pair of arms 33, these arms being pivoted side by side on pins 84% extending between the sides stirrup of the toward opposite edges thereof and spaced above the bottom 31 of the stirrup a proper distance to have the arms supported thereon when swung outwardly to their extended position as in Fig. 3.
When the grappling device is being lowered the arms 33 occupy the position shown in Fig. 2 extending vertically upwardly between the sides of the stirrup and having their upper ends rounded off as at 35 on their outwardly facing sides and retained against outward movement by flanges 36 projecting downwardly from opposite sides of a disk 37 having an integral stem 38 which projects upwardly through a suitable aperture in the upper end of the casing 30 and has an eye 39 formed on its upper end to which the cable 26 is attached. A coiled expansion spring 10 surrounds the stem 38 between the top of the casing and the disk 37 and presses the latter against the ends of the arms 33 with the flanges 36 projecting downwardly a slight distance over the rounded ends of the arms.
These grappling devices, of which there are eight as will be obvious, are, lowered on the ends of the cable to the sunken ship which is indicated at 15, in their closed position after the exact location of the latter has been determined by suitable finding devices,
the springs being of such strength as to hold the arms in their closed position until a sudden snap to the cable, or reverse movement thereof, compresses the spring and allows the arms to fall to their extended positions,
these arms being adapted to catch in the hatches of the ship or other parts so that by rotating the drums to wind the cables thereon the ship may be raised to the surface.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, of the United States is- 1. In an apparatus for raising sunken vessels, a grappling device adapted to be attached to a cable'comprising a casing, a pair of arms pivoted in the lower ends of said casing, a member movable in the casing-and engaging the said arms to retain themagainst outward movement, said member being adapted to have the cable attached thereto, and a spring pressing said member against the said arms.
2. In an apparatus for raising sunken vessels, a grappling device to be attached to a cable comprising a casing, a pair of arms pivoted in the lower ends of said casing, a member movable in the casing and engaging the said arms to retain them against outward movement, said member being adapted to have the cable attached thereto, and a spring pressing said member against the said arms, said arms having rounded off ends and said member having downwardly projecting flanges on opposite sides thereof adapted to engage the said rounded off ends.
3. In an apparatus for raising sunken vessels, 'a grappling device adapted to be attached to a cablecomprising a short cylindrical casing, said casing having a depending stirruplike extension, a pair of arms pivoted on said extension at the lower end thereof and adapted to be held against'downward movement below a horizontal :position by engagement with the bottom of said extension, said arms extending upwardly between opp'ositewal-ls of the extension when the device is being lowered to a ship, a disk slidable within the Casi-ligand having '51.;PTQ- jectingstemadapted tohave a cable attached thereto, flanges on thesides of said disk proj'ec'ting downwardly across the ends of said arms to retain the latter against-ou-tward'displacement, and a spring bearingbetween the said disk and the upper end of'the casing and pressing said disk into engaging position with the said arms.
