which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to washing machines in general, and particularly to such machines as are adapted to the washing of dishes, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple cheap form of such a machine adaptable for hotels, restaurants and the like.-
I accomplish the above object by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawin which is a part of this application for letters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially sectioned, of my device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form ofmy device.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation of a further modification of my device.
In general my device consist'sof an oscillatable container having pumping devicesin each end thereof adaptable to keep liquid therein in constant reciprocating motion among the dishes contained therein.
The container 4 is'supported upon. trunnions 5 oscillatably mounted in bearing stand's '6, and a cover 7 is provided for each container through which to enter the dishes.
At each end of the container 4 is mounted an inwardly dishedperforated diaphragm 8, the ends of the container being closed Joy a solid diaphragm 9.m0unted outside diaphragm 8, said diaphragm 9 being of flexible material such as thin metahrubber, leather, or the like.
A housing 10 is mounted upon each end of the container 4 and a shaft 11 is mounted within a hub 12 upon said housing, said shaft being axially alined with said container 4 and attached to the solid diaphragm 9, as shown in Fig. 1.
Levers 13 are pivotally attached to shafts 11, and above such pivotal attachment point are pivotally connected by a link 14.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 each lever, 13 is mounted at its lower end in a diagonally slotted bracket 15 by means of a cross pin 16, and each lever 13 is provided at its upper end with a handle.
In use, the dishes are placed in the container 4 through the cover 7, and the container partially filled with soapy water, and the cover 7 closed.
Reciprocal operation-of either lever 13 now causes simultaneous distortions of diaphragms 9 one outward and the other inward relatively to container 4, which causes the water to be sucked through the perforations of one of diaphragms 8 and forcibly expelled through the perforations in the other diaphragm 8, thus causing a reciprocating current of water within the container 4 and also numerous forced streams or jets of water from the perforations in diaphragms 8. i q
f To further assist inthe washing process oscillation of the container ,4 is provided for, since operation of the levers 13 will cause the pins 16 to slide within the diagonal slots of the brackets 15, one ascending while the opposite descends, thus causing the oscillation of container 4, as shown in dotted center lines in Fig. 1.
, 'Air ports 17 are provided in housings 10 to allow air to enter and leave the same as the diaphragm 9 reciprocates.
In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 2 the interior arrangements of the container 4' are identical with that shown in Fig. 1, but the oscillation of the container is provided for by mounting the container upon a ro a base 19, a single handle lever 20 being pivotally attached to the container and pivotally connected to each of the levers 13' by links 21', the levers 13' being pivotaliy fulcrumed at the lower ends thereof to brackets 22 secured to container 4.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 a reciprocating piston 23 is mounted within a cylinder 24 upon housing 10', and said piston connected to the shaft 11', this piston tiaking the place of the diaphragm 9 of fly invention may be made of any size and constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my invention, I. wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all or 18 operating upon the scope and purvlew of my invention as defined in the appended clalms.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.111 a washing machine: a container; perforated diaphragms at each end of said container; housings upon-each end of said container outside said perforated diaphragms; reciprocating shafts mounted within said housings; pumping means upon the inner ends of said shafts; levers connected to the outer ends of said shafts; and means whereby the operation of said levers will oscillate said container.
