ROPE-MEASURING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK TrlmL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Itemsen, in the county of Plymouth, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefulsides in the provision of a machine of this nature embodying means of novel construction and arrangement through the medium of which the length of a rope as it passes through the machine will be accurately measured and registered.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide a measuring device of the character specified, which shall embody the desired features of simplicity, efficiency, reliability and convenience, and which may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
IVith the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the machine comprises a pair of spaced frame sections 5, each including the top and bottom member 6 and 7, and uprights S and 9 connecting the ends of said members, braces 10 being further provided to strengthen the sections. As before stated these sections 5 are spaced one from the other and are held in such relation by means of cross braces 11 connected thereto.
Journaled in the uprights 9 and extending transversely between the sections is a shaft 12 on which is mounted for rotation a reel 13, a crank 4 being provided at one end of the shaft by which the reel may be operated. A second shaft 15 is journaled in the up rights 8 to likewise extend transversely between the sections, and mounted for rotation thereon is a wheel 16, the periphery of which is grooved as at 17 for a purpose to appear. Carried by and extending laterally of the wheel is an eccentric pin 18 arranged to engage and actuate a trip device 19 forming a part of a registering dial 20 supported by one of the uprights 8. The dial may be of any desired type but for convenience is illustrated conventionally.
Provided in the uprights 8 below the wheel 16 are transversely alined vertical slots 21 in which are mounted for vertical sliding movement blocks 22. Connecting the blocks 22 is a shaft 23 having rotatably mounted thereon a roller 21 disposed directly below the wheel 16. This roller and the wheel 16 are held against movement longitudinally of their respective shafts by stop collar 25 of ordinary type.
In order to hold the roller 2 1 in position to cooperate with the wheel, there is provided in each of the uprights 8 and com municating with the slot 21 a recess 26 in which is seated a coil spring 27 to engage the block 22.
The roller 24: is thus yieldably urged toward the wheel 16 whereby when the rope is passed therebetween it will be held in frictional engagement with the wheel and will transmit motion to the latter as it is wound upon the reel 13.
When it is desired to measure for a customer a rope of a certain length, the end of the rope is passed, from the spool on which it is wound, between the roller 24 and wheel 16 and is then carried to the reel 13 where it is fastened in any desired manner. The crank 14 is then grasped and rotated to wind the rope upon the reel 13, the rope, as it passes between the roller and wheel, transmitting motion to the latter whereby it will be rotated to actuate the dial 20 and register thereon the amount of rope withdrawn from the spool.
It will be noted that the shaft which supports the reel 13 is removably mounted in the uprights 9, so that when the desired amount of rope has been wound upon the reel, it is severed adjacent to the latter and the reel then lifted from the frame, after which the rope may be readily removed from the reel in the shape of a coil. coils of rope and thus provide a bundle which may be conveniently carried there is provided in the reel 13 at diametrically'op- In order to tie the shaft detachably journaled in said notches, a
pulley journaled in the uprights on a horizontal aXis and having a peripheral groove for frictionally receiving a rope when fed from the reel, a roller having resiliently supported hearings in the uprights and contacting with the periphery of the pulley, and registering means mounted upon one of the uprights and actuated by the pulley.
